Baby shopping while ttc

I think there's an old wife's tale about this but...

Am I crazy to start picking up bargains on neutral things while ttc?
I don't mean massive things like cots but things that'd fit in the loft/nursey to be.
Earlier I seen a starter kit of bottles reduced quite a bit because the box was damaged (bottles n contents were fine just someone's been playing footie with the box in the delivery room)
I don't plan on having a hoard of stuff either but I don't see the harm in getting some of the expense out of the way while we wait.

Personally I wouldn't. 9 months is plenty of time to hunt for bargains...i'd be saving money now, not buying baby items.

If it takes you years to conceive, or indeed you never conceive, you will regret it. But then most people do conceive within a year. How long will you be comfortable having that stuff around if it takes a while to conceive?

Well it's your choice. If you feel comfortable buying things then go for it.

I did start to get stuff but then it took a further 5 years to actually get pregnant (IVF). Given my time again, I wouldn't. But the chances are you'll probably be fine.

If she struggles to concieve, having a few baby bits in the house is hardly going to make her feel any differently about struggling to concieve.

I did, then never had a baby. It's horrible to have to deal with the stuff on top of everything else if it doesn't do as you hope.

I didn't buy a single thing til I was 34 weeks pregnant and even then, it was a struggle. I'm very superstitious. DS was born at 38 weeks and by then I had everything he needed and most was second hand or bargains. There is really no need to buy anything until you are pregnant and when you are, pregnancy is a very long and boring thing - shopping can help make it fun so don't miss out on that by doing it all in advance!

There's no need to shop for a pregnancy you haven't got. I think you need to wait. Not out of superstition but just common sense. I hope you get pg and shopping very soon :)

Thanks owl. We've (sort of mainly) accepted it now. Taking unused baby grows to the charity shop was an experience is rather not have had to have.

I think I was born with no patience haha!

It'd all go up into the loft until I was pregnant n ready to have it down. I hate shopping, my mum says I shop like a man in n out with exactly what I need and bugger all else, I don't like the trailing around shops so I can't imagine doing a full shop in 4weeks like Cray.

And if worst came to worst id probably hand it into a women's shelter or somewhere similar or friends if they needed it at the time.

My friend is 20weeks right now and I think she must be going down the expensive route, I almost hit the deck when she told me the price of her sale bargain pram (close to a grand) my DH asked if it pushes itself up hills.

If you're shopping for what you need, put the baby stuff down. You don't need it (yet).

A colleague from work asked if she could pop over to my house when I was pregnant.

She bought loads of bits that she had bought when ttc.

She had fallen pregnant once then miscarried and never got pregnant again.

I think you're underestimating what that "worst comes to the worst" would actually be like.

Don't do it. 40 weeks is plenty of time to get everything that you need. Wait and see how TTC goes; you might need your money for something else. Just buy some folic acid for now.

Chances are you will conceive fine but still a lot of people struggle. I suffer secondary infertility, having loads of baby stuff round from DS makes it so much worse. As for giving it away at the mo completely inconceivable if ull pardon the pun. You can always pick up bargains for baby stuff. I know it's excitjng when ttc. I was really excited when we tried at first and stupidly told people I'd give anything to take that back

I'm with everyone else - there will be plenty of time to pick up NCT sale bargains in the next year or so. Leave it for now.

It took us over 5 years to conceive. I disagree with Owl I think that having unused baby stuff in dusty boxes would have been horrific.

I really wouldn't do it.

You need much less than you think you so. You'd be better to just start saving in earnest and then it won't matter whether it's on sale or not.

I wouldn't. 9 months is a long old time - and I wouldn't know because DC was born prematurely at 7 1/2 months!

But you don't need to do a 'full shop' anyway. Honestly, you need a pram and a car seat (both of mine I got cheaper online and they had next day delivery) and a handful of vests/babygrows plus a Moses basket or crib and some nappies. That's really it. People will buy you a hell of a lot of stuff anyway and the shops/internet don't close down the minute you go into labour. It's good to be organised but don't get carried away.

No I wouldn't. There are sales and bargains all the time. Baby events are really frequent. And you'll probably find that if you do conceive you'll change your mind about what you want. Don't underestimate how awful looking at baby stuff can be if you have a loss. It could take you ages to conceive, even if it doesn't you've still got nine months. What's the rush.

No. You'll have 8 months to pick up bargains once you are pregnant, or 6 months if you wait till the first scan. That's plenty.

Also you may get given stuff by friends and family anyway, or see an even better bargain later (second hand big kit is best bargain territory IME).
