To be suddenly broody at 39?

We have one DD aged 7. At that time DH was still studying, we had financial issues and having one child seemed to fulfil our desire to be parents. We had no particular desire to have more and then the window seemed to pass. We drew a line under it and were completely fine with that.

Just recently I am having major doubts. I feel very bad that I haven't given DD any siblings as both DH and I are very involved with our own families. We are in a much better situation now financially and could easily afford another child (we would have been extremely stretched 3 or 4 years ago).

AIBU to be ridiculously broody and to just go for it? I'm aware my fertile window is getting smaller with the years and that this could be the last chance we have. Would I be mad to go back to the square one of sleepless nights and nappies? Has this happened to anyone else and did you get over it or go for it?

I'm very close to my sister and I'm 31 and she's 18. We've got closer as we've grown up. I'm planning on a 6 yr gap between children because I didn't want two babies close together. There's lots of negatives doing it that way too. It's what works for your family

Oh just do it. Don't weigh the pros and cons, you can't quantify love. If you want one, go for it.

Good luck Flowers

There's a 13 year age gap between me and my big sister. She adored me as a baby/child and although during my teenage years we weren't particularly close, when I fell pregnant with DD at 19 we really bonded. I'd now class her as my best friend, her 2 DS are grown men and wonderful cousins to my DCs.

DP and I have talked about a baby (my 2 DCs aren't his and he has no children of his own) but he feels at 43 he's too old (I'm only 30 so I don't feel that way yet). I'm painfully broody. We have the money for another DC, not the space as yet but that's something that can be sorted. Having a child with someone you love is an amazing feeling, and I'm desperate for DP to experience it, but he won't be swayed.

Good luck OP, just go for it.

Let us know how you get on with your thinking broodymare. I've decided to give it until Xmas and see how I feel whilst booking some child free time over the next few months with dh to have a proper serious chat about it. Will also start looking at doing some serious saving in case we do decide to go for it

whoopiedoo · 17/09/2016 16:10

I didn't want children until I hit 39 and had a 40 crisis full of angst over life events I felt maybe I should experience.....

I'm now 43 and expecting baby no.2 to arrive any day. Had first baby at 42.

One word of warning don't 'dabble' with the idea of 'seeing what happens', we had one evening out with a bottle of wine and me being convinced we were outside of that fertile time and hey presto! Pregnant again!

Fortunatepiggy · 18/09/2016 07:29

Ha! Congrats whoopiedo!

I'm 34, have a 9 and 7 year old and due another in Jan ( Will be 35 then) I got broody and dh didn't take a lot to convince Grin

Writerwannabe83 · 18/09/2016 08:05

Me and DH agreed we'd have one DS but when he was 18 months or so I got broody for another baby and we planned to TTC but unfortunately I had an early miscarriage when it did happen and now 6 months later we haven't conceived again.

DS is 2.5 now and I'm so desperate to give him a sibling and that's my main driving force now. We obviously want another baby too but providing a sibling is really important to me.

I will feel really sad if DS has to grow up as an only child.

Peanutbutterpussycat · 18/09/2016 08:15

I got pregnant when ds was 7, dd was born as he was turning 8, they're now 13 and 5.
What I have found difficult is to find things to do that they both like, to entertain a year one little girl and a year nine big boy is hard as they obviously have different interests but I would not change it for the world.

I was 33 when dd was born and am approaching 39 myself, I have old school friends who have dc heading off to university and others are having their first baby and lots haven't started yet.

In the nicest possible sense, please do it for the right reasons, the age gap will narrow when older ( I have a brother 8 years younger than me ) but will be difficult in the early years and will possibly not be a companion for your 7/8 yr old.

Good luck op :)

Bluewombler2k · 18/09/2016 09:55

My ds is nearly 7 and we have a 10 mo DD, I am 40 next month. I have no regrets, DS adores his sister and I feel much more confident this time around. I admit I have more aches and pains than last time and am definitely feeling the tiredness more but I wouldn't change it for the world. Go for it if you both want to!

whoopiedoo · 18/09/2016 09:56

Thanks Fortunate :)

My sister is 24 years older than me and she is my best friend! Whereas I know people who don't speak to their similar aged siblings.
