Fall Over October. I Know IABU.

So MacMillan have the cake and now the Go Sober October. If it's not them it's BUPA or Bear Grylls banging on about cancer.

When I'm watching the telly in the evening and wanting to watch intellectually stimulating mindless crap on TV; every other bloody advert is about cancer.
I don't need to be reminded every 30 minutes that it's "the fight of my life".
I'm battered and bruised after surgery, I've spent 4 bloody hours at the hospital where they've taken all my blood and replaced it with radioactive dye; and I know I'm right in the middle of the fight.

I know I'm being ungrateful and unreasonably annoyed Blush

Anyway I drink rarely, one Christmas to another (although I did get spectacularly sloshed last Bank Holiday). Staying sober for October wouldn't really be a big sacrifice for me.

Would I be unreasonable to get pissed in October instead... hence the title October Fall Over ?

No. You knock yourself out Flowers Wine Wine Wine

twopenneth · 10/09/2016 10:20

YANBU feeling the way you do, but perhaps time will soften you a little once it's behind you.

The adverts are doing a fantastic job of bringing your plight to the people who aren't going through it right now, and who in turn raise the money to fund the research you're benefitting from though.

Good luck with your fight

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 10:20

Thanks Pottering.

I'm really going to apply myself and hit the gin.

I wont take this challenge lightly.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/09/2016 10:29

Yes I'll join you in fall over October. I'm sure I can manage a few drinks. Do we have to drink til we fall over or will being moderately pissed count?
I get what you're saying. All these campaigns with clever puns. I remember last year they had 'gro vember' or something where lots of people grew beards. Not sure if that was in support of cancer or just moustache awareness.

I agree, it's grating to hear that cancer is something to fight, let's kick cancer's butt etc..My good friend died from cancer and does that mean she didn't 'fight' enough? Sometimes I can't sit and listen to those kind of adverts.

Wishing you well Flowers

EnquiringMingeWantsToKnow · 10/09/2016 10:35

You knock yourself out, I'm sure you deserve it.

But I've always interpreted the "us" in "Let's kick cancer's butt" as the human race. Through a combination of fund raising, research and public health initiatives we're going to minimise its toll: and that "we" is marathon runners, head shavers, scientists, politicians, HCPs, smoking quitters et al (any whom might or might not have cancer themselves).

Best of luck Thanks.

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 10:35

Ilost. I think if we're really committed, then we really need to start at breakfast.

I think we'll need to sit before the falling over stage, causing ourselves unnecessary injury would just clog up A&E.

It really needs to be a falling over potential

Flowers for your friend. Like you my BF died three months after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, aged 48.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/09/2016 10:45

Enquiringminge good point, I like your interpretation of 'Let's kick cancer's butt'. Smile

I agree, let's not clog up A & E with October fall overs. I'm suggesting covering the floor with bean bags, cushions or bubble wrap as a precautionary measure.

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 10:48

I'm really liking that idea ilost.
I want the bubblewrap.

The sound will indicate a horizontal position has been achieved, and whilst I'm down, I get some bubble wrap popping therapy Grin

TheProblemOfSusan · 10/09/2016 10:51

Flowers, Cake, Wine and the rest of the bottle to you. YANBU.

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 10:55

Hold fire Susan; it's only September..... or are you suggesting I start training ?

I did train for the MacMillan bike ride so perhaps you're right.

OP posts:
BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/09/2016 10:57

No YANBU that is upsets you. Flowers for you. If I drank at all, I would join you in drinking till I fell over. I'm quite clumsy anyway, does that count?

My MIL found out she had breast cancer earlier this year. Her diagnosis was as good as it could be and when she finished her radiotherapy and we went to see her, I took her some Tickled Pink flowers. I worried that she might think it was insensitive, but I bought them because we were going to get her flowers anyway and I thought that cancer research should get some money out of it. She didn't say anything but would that have been insensitive? Confused

LetsJunglyJumpToIt · 10/09/2016 10:57

This is the best idea I've heard in ages. WineWineFlowers

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 11:04

I don't think it's insensitive at all Being. Smile

I get accused of being insensitive over my own cancer. Apparently I'm not taking it serious enough Grin [bemused]

On the subject of your feet however, perhaps fall over once, then have another few drinks just to make sure that it's a genuine pissed event ? You don't want to be accused of cheating.

OP posts:
ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/09/2016 11:05

No I think that's a thoughtful thing to do, twat It's hard knowing if you've said the right thing.

Grin tuttifruit take some anger out on those bubbles while you're down there!
I actually think it might be more sensible to wrap yourself in the bubble wrap during October so you can go about your daily life, visit the pub and so on and have the freedom of falling over whenever the urge takes you.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/09/2016 11:08

Phew! I was worried she would be upset because it was a reminder or something. Smile

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 11:09

Errrrr. How do I pop the bubble wrap if I'm wrapped up like an Egyptian mummy ? With my teeth ???????

We need a strategy. Liking the idea of fearless falling, but I don't think you've given this enough thought Ilost.

Sorry Tinkly. The waiting game is an absolute head fuck. Sorry but I'm swearing like a sailor since the diagnosis. No offense to sailors intended. I will drink your share of the challenge Grin Wine

My BCN (Breast Cancer Nurse) is also up for the challenge. We've decided that we'll do it via a drip and have decided on Bacardi as it's colourless and she wouldn't want to out herself by having her usual tipple which is Tia Maria. She doesn't like Vodka.
I don't know whether I like Bacardi yet, so it'll be interesting.

OP even before you said about having cancer, I thought Fall Over October was funny.

If I see any of the posters graffiti'd over, I'll know it was you!!

Isn't October also Stoptober?

if they keep going at this rate they might as well rename it "shoot up and hope everyone's recovered from this crap by the time you come round-ober".

I hate Movember as well, there's enough bleeping facial hair around atm.

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 11:27

What I don't like is you can buy a "Golden Ticket" for a day off, for £15.

That's shirking one's commitment. I will be pissed every day. I'm not a quitter.

OP posts:
WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 10/09/2016 11:46

Oh tutti I hear you. I'm 12mths since I finished my 18mths(ish) of chemo and I'm feeling saturated with bloody cancer shit. Particularly the stupid fucking black and white 'challenge accepted' vain selfies. I was very defensive of the makeup free selfies and the ice bucked challenge as they did actually raise a fuck ton of money for the intended causes, but the 'challenge accepted' crap doesn't even have a particular recipient in mind, far less any way to donate - it's to raise awareness of cancer!! Well fuck me sideways! Cancer, huh? What the fuck is that!?!

Sorry, I'm ranting now, I think I'll just pour some wine and don my son's protective skateboard gear so when I fall over for October I cause myself minimum damage and quietly hope my fucked by chemo osteoarthritic hips don't break. Flowers

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 11:58

You rant as much as you want Where the Fuck. It's nice to meet someone as foul mouthed as myself (I know you wont be offended at that; this cancer shit would make a nun fuck).

Wine for getting through he chemo.

Skateboard gear is a plan Without being rude, if you've got post chemo hair the helmet might be a good idea.
Over on the cancer thread there are women rocking the Ronald McDonald or brillo pad hair look, that I think would be up for a skate board helmet.

I'm not at the chemo stage yet (but should be). They're having to reoperate next week as I didn't get clear bloody margins. As I already have arthritis, I'm going to personalise my wheelbarrow (don't like wheelchairs Grin)

OP posts:
ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/09/2016 12:00

Go you, wherethefuck, with your protective skateboard gear, great idea Grin

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/09/2016 12:03

Hope your Op goes well.
You're right, I didn't think the bubble wrap suit through. It'd be terribly hot and tricky to go for a wee.

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 10/09/2016 12:09

Pissed and covered in it, is a step too far Ilost.

You need to think this through. Kneel down. I'm going to appoint you........
