We don't allow dogs at work we have a huge sign on the wall outside but people still act surprised when I don't allow them or they ask if they can carry them then they always storm off claiming to spend there money else where happens atleast twice a day Really winds me up and no we never used to allow dogs either

I'm on a bus with some very sweaty people and stinky fast food cheers. Give me the smell of wet dog any day! At least they don't slurp and smack their lips (and talk crap very loudly).

I just don't see the need to take dogs everywhere with you. I can see the logic behind being off on an all day hike up a mountain or something and looking for a pub which is happy to have dogs so everyone can have something to eat and the dog a rest under the table.

That's completely different from popping out to meet a friend for a coffee, or going into town to shop for clothes. None of my friends who have dogs would even dream of taking their pets in these situations. It just wouldn't cross their minds to.

I really think some dog owners have lost their sense of perspective. Dogs are not people. Shop owners are perfectly entitled to say "no dogs" and only admit assistance dogs. I rarely see assistance dogs in the supermarket, but if everyone were allowed to take their pets in the place would be heaving with dogs. It's just so inappropriate. Some people don't like dogs, or are allergic to dogs, and not all dogs are lovely and well-behaved. Wet dogs stink - dog owners can't always smell it, but they do. Dogs are animals and they do not belong in shops or restaurants, people do.

dreamingofsun · 07/09/2016 15:35

motheroff - depends on the area. market towns where we live and the countryside is fine, the bigger towns no (and some of the latter have such disgusting dirty floors in their cafe's i'm not sure i want my dog to touch them anyway). Isle of Wight was a nightmare when we visited about 10 years ago, especially since it was raining most of the time

Heavenly just one of the reasons we love holidaying in beautiful Northumberland! Dog heaven up there (those beaches!)

If all dog owners were like those on MN then I wouldn't mind dogs in public places. The problem is though that anyone, no matter how clueless and irresponsible, can own a dog and their dogs cause a lot of problems. There are plenty of bad owners who wouldn't dream of picking up their dog's poo - it's all over the streets round here, I'm glad those people can't take their dogs in the local Co-op or cafe because the floors would be covered in shit. Those kinds of people would let their dogs jump up everywhere and run around causing damage and upsetting people. Unless there is better regulation of dog ownership in this country, thank goodness there are plenty of dog-free places.

GingerbreadGingerbread · 07/09/2016 16:19

I wouldn't want dogs in a cafe.

LeonardInTheArgosBag · 07/09/2016 16:20

Yes, what CaptainBrickbeard said. Not everyone is considerate.

Case in point: we were at a restaurant and DD2 (then about 13 months) was sitting under the table playing with some toys. A dog kept coming over to lick her, and started growling playfully. DD2 likes dogs (we have a family dog) but got freaked out with the growling I asked the owner to take it away.

Her response: "Oh but Marigold LOVES children."

Hmm.

I had to forcibly remove the dog and it was only then the owner heaved herself up and dragged Marigold away, muttering about me "manhandling" her dog! In my experience, most dog owners are great. But a minority are dicks, and those are the ones you remember, not the perfect dog sat under the table.

HeavenlyHeathen · 07/09/2016 16:38

So the aibu point is that customers should read the sign before entering?

Yanbu

Yabu to not let dogs in

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/09/2016 16:42

Heavenly, the OP has said it is a shop full of glass breakables with an open kitchen in the attached cafe. Exactly how is it unreasonable to ban dogs??

123Yellow123 · 07/09/2016 16:54

NavyandWhite and you feel the same way about other people's pets? You would be cool for them to bring pet parrot/spider/snake/lizard everywhere with them as you would be open minded and cool with it as you know THEY love their pet thus everyone else should too???

Could you repeat that please. Not sure I got it Grin

Smartieskid · 07/09/2016 17:00

By law any place serving food must have procedures in place so that dogs have no access to the food preparation area as we have an open kitchen we can't allow them other wise we wouldn't comply with food hygiene rules

Haha I think my computer knows I feel very strongly about this... Grin

HeavenlyHeathen · 07/09/2016 17:04

Apologies captain- I assumed this was an open forum where you were allowed to express your opinion.

That was what the op asked for.

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/09/2016 17:09

I didn't say you weren't allowed to express it, I just wondered why you held that particular opinion so I asked.

HeavenlyHeathen · 07/09/2016 17:14

Ok so maybe I was a bit defensive then captain.

I think it's unreasonable if you live in a tourist destination where a lot of dogs go to not allow the dogs in.

I don't think it makes business sense. The op would make more money in the shop if she allowed more customers in.

I've never come across an owner who would take their dog in a gift shop if they had a badly behaved dog-as breakages have to be paid for.

It's bad business sense.

LeonardInTheArgosBag · 07/09/2016 17:21

Heavenly perhaps the cafe and shop make enough money from people who are looking for dog-free zones? I am guessing that if they were struggling to make a turnover they might not have this policy.

HeavenlyHeathen · 07/09/2016 17:23

That doesn't make sense Leonard. As there's dogs in the cafe.
