We don't allow dogs at work we have a huge sign on the wall outside but people still act surprised when I don't allow them or they ask if they can carry them then they always storm off claiming to spend there money else where happens atleast twice a day Really winds me up and no we never used to allow dogs either

Dogs may be cuter and better behaved than children, but the difference is I'm not allergic to children. I'm not sure why anyone's wish to bring their dog into a shop should override my need to breathe.

Regarding service dogs, I don't know why they seem to trigger my allergies less - they don't look particularly short-haired - but possibly they are cleaned more often. Usually when I start to feel ill next to a dog and notice my throat closing up, there's a very strong "dog smell", so presumably it hasn't been washed/groomed in a while and there are therefore more allergens.

Roasted, Guide Dogs, the association, train the owners to groom their dogs daily so yes in theory they should have less hair to shed and be well groomed. They also have controlled diets so are generally healthier. However if CandyDog gets wet in the rain, she has the wet dog smell that all dogs can get.
I've discussed this rlsehete, I remember reading it's saliva people are allergic to, but don't know if that's true. If it is, a well groomed dog may well have less saliva on their fur.

I always find these threads interesting. I completely understand why people like dogs, but many dog owners just don't seem to understand why others may not. For me, it's the smell and slobber. Many dog owners seem to be immune to the smell of dogs, and deny it. I have met very few humans in public who smell, but many many dogs.

At least this thread has meant that I now know to avoid holidays in the Lake District and Northumberland! I only know about two cafes which allow dogs where I live, and I avoid them. And I can assure you I'm not a weirdo in any sense, and will smile at any well trained dog - I just don't want them in a shop or restaurant.
