We've had our mattress 7 odd years now. It was very expensive (around 1k) as we wanted a decent one. Since having three kids and two of whom have autism and needed a lot of carrying and picking up off the floor I have a bad back. Every morning I wake up with a sore and aching back. We've come back from our holiday and I didn't have the same back issues as I did here. Dh thinks I'm crazy to want to replace a perfectly good mattress.

I don't know where you were overseas but where I've been (Egypt, USA, Spain) seem to use very firm mattresses. I had the same problem as you and we decided to change from medium to firm when buying our new one and I've never had a back pain since.

It's not perfectly good if it gives you a bad back though. Try a memory foam topper first, though.

Apparently you should replace a mattress on average every eight years. Tell your dh its time for a new mattress.

I Soros say it's time to replace it anyway. Although I'm in awe of your 1k mattress! I'm looking at one that's 300, and thought that was extravagant- I'm intrigued, what is different?

One thing that did make sense was that you need a decent support plus a decent amount of sinking. Sinking level often depends on your weight, so the bigger you are then the firmer the mattress you can get away with. But after 7 years it sounds like time for a new mattress anyway

I've suffered with a bad back (disc prolapse etc) for years. I can honestly say that my Tempur mattress has been a godsend. They are really pricy but totally worth it imo

Oh, and it came with a 10 year guarentee

Not saying you shouldn't get a new mattress but were there other things you did differently - more or less exercise or type of exercise, stress level, activities, showering or bathing at a different time, driving less or more. A new mattress might be just the thing but it would be a shame to get one and find it makes no difference.

The eight years thing is part of an advertising campaign.....unsurprisingly by a company trying to sell you mattresses

That said, if you think a firmer mattress would help your back, then that's got to be worth investing in not that I'd consider paying £1k for a mattress.
I do agree with poster above though who suggests looking into a specialist massage physio or chiropractor .

We've got a vie sprung. Very nice but I spend the night with shooting pains in my back and pelvis. I definitely need a course of Pilates to strengthen it but sleeping is terrible. I think I'll lean on him hard to change it. Or maybe try a mattress topper first. We spent a lot on this one after buying a cheap bed that fell apart we thought we'd invest. Whereas now I would happily fling it in the skip.

We got a tempur mattress, soft and supportive - best thing ever!! Though not everyone likes them so best to check.

I have to say though I think it's partly the size; we went for the one above a king (super king I think, always forget when buying bedding!) and now I don't get big hairy legs bumping into me and hot man breath snoring into my ear all night, unless I want to, and trek over to his side for a cuddle

It could also be your pillows btw - I had awful back pain once when i was a student that turned out to be coming from my neck because I had uncomfortable old pillows. Cheaper to replace!

Omg op I am in exactly the same position, and even have a visprung too. The el cheapo mattress in our spare room doesn't hurt my back as much! I'm so angry, I even feel I was mis-sold one that wasn't firm enough. I don't think it's stood up to my pregnancy weight gains either. I've started doing pilates again, just from YouTube videos and it def makes a difference to how i sleep and I don't hurt so much when I wake up. Not in a position to buy a new mattress for a while (and quite nervous about it after spending a fortune on such a bad choice) but I dream of the day I can buy a new one!!

Definitely get a new mattress. Keep your old for the spare room since it's still good. And as for 1st world trouble. While it's true that the best mattress I ever had was the cheapest ikea sold at the time, I was also young and able to heal quickly. Nowadays my mattress is about the same as yours.

I've ordered a mattress topper and will change the pillows but disappointed in the viesprung. God knows how old the mattress we had in Spain was but I didn't get any pain from that. The kids all have John Lewis own mattresses and they're much better. I'm a person who needs her sleep so I cannot deal with shooting pains all night. Will work on the husband. I don't think I'd ever spend so much again though on one.

Go try some cheap IKEA ones, they're just as nice as silentnight range but cheap enough you don't mind replacing them often. We've got a sprung one with a layer of memory foam.

Saying that the nicest mattress we tried was a £2.5k mammoth mattress. It was lush!

'Replace every 8' is a marketing ploy by mattress makers, with no valid research.

You replace the mattress when your consistently not getting good quality sleep, so OP it sounds like a change is due :)

I have 4/5 on the firmness rating and after spinal fusion surgery, I've never slept better. Memory foam was my enemy because I got stuck in the mould of myself. See what works for you

I've got a really bad back as well and have a firm mattress just from ikea. My back is always fine after that nights sleep.

Hate memory foam and soft mattresses as you just sink in to them.

Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, it keeps the spine in neutral
