To think cheese is a healthy snack?

Maybe I am. I gave my LB cheese chunks in a little pot and a small bottle of water for his Break today on his first day in Primary school. He loves this and has it at home. He came home with a note saying in future to send a healthy nutritious snack in future.

Can I ask what u would send as a Healthy snack to school please?

Ego147. That was rather patronising. Please continue to believe ft makes you fat if you so desire.

doup76 · 03/09/2016 06:53

My dd's school recommends cheese as a snack. Fruit, veg and/or cheese only. I thougt this was the norm! Cheese is ideal for children! Unfortunately she won't eat cheese ....

Spottytop1 · 03/09/2016 08:01

Maybe the schools concern was that you sent only cheese and nothing else.

I know neither my children or myself eat just cheese chunks on their own. It's either grapes, tomatoes or some form of cracker.
Tbh I'd never just send chunks of cheese alone...

Yet another outdated fat bashing idiot!! Cheese IS healthy and always was. It's high in calcium protein and essential fats. Fat is good sugar is bad. Oh and it's good for you teeth too. If it was me I'd print off some proper info about the benefits and shove it up their nose. Would they prefer a deadly cereal bar instead or maybe some raisins? Seriously

2ndstreet · 03/09/2016 08:06

I would be having a meeting with the headteacher if I was told it was fruit only at snack times for me daughter. She seems to really struggle with blood sugar crashes (and becomes moody & unreasonable) if she doesn't have some fat & protein at each meal/snack. She can't take nuts to school (fair enough as allergies are so prevalent) so takes cheese & fruit/veg for snack. I did have to re-educate her foundation teacher who told her that bread was healthy & cheese wasn't. Fortunately my daughter belived me & was able to understand the basic science behind needing a meal to be balanced. Through science & personal experience I think all snacks should include some protein & fat for health, mood & concentration- kind of important at school!

Dontyoulovecalpol · 03/09/2016 08:17

Deadly cereal bar Hmm
Deadly raisins Confused

LOL. And you called her an idiot

SabineUndine · 03/09/2016 09:55

Think I'd put in a large bag of Haribos and a 2l bottle of coke and really give them something worth moaning about!

Ego147 · 03/09/2016 10:15

I think that anyone who says something is healthy or unhealthy needs to analyse the food properly.

Grapes - full of protective minerals and vitamins ..but sugar which is easily released

Apples - fibre, minerals and vitamins - sugar less of a problem but not much protein (and we need protein)

Cheese - protein, minerals, vitamins - but the fat and salt levels.

Analysing individual foods as healthy / unhealthy is ridiculous. Most foods have plusses and minuses - and you need a diet that gives you what you need - and yes, some of that food may have a downside as well.

Rachelmw1971 · 03/09/2016 10:30

Ridiculous - cheese is the perfect snack on so many levels especially for a 4 year ild

daisypond · 03/09/2016 11:00

I'd be annoyed if I got a note like that, too. Cheese is a good snack for a child. And it's easy to eat if it's cubed, and non-messy, non-drippy - perfect. I'd complain.

Doman · 03/09/2016 11:12

Absolutely it's healthy. Perhaps mix it up with carrot sticks or something to keep the food police at bay.
And, by the way, apparently rice cakes aren't great because the processing means their nutritional value is lost.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 03/09/2016 11:18

There is no issue with the fat content of cheese for a small child. None. They NEED the fat to build nerves and cells.

PacificDogwod · 03/09/2016 11:22

I think there is a huge issue with people putting their own issues with food on what is appropriate for growing children.

Food is food. There is not 'good' and 'bad' food, it's relative amounts that matter.
And cheese is near perfect for a young child as a snack.

It's quite concerning that school would give such misguided advice IMO.

LaurieMarlow · 03/09/2016 11:23

I've never understood the rice cake love.

I'm always being told that baby rice is nutritionally worthless wallpaper paste, yet rice cakes, which are bland & highly processed are a middle class gold standard.

Never got that. Confused

sammyjayneex · 03/09/2016 11:28

If they ban cheese chunks then why not ban cheese sandwiches as well then at lunch time. School are being OTT

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 03/09/2016 11:29

"I think there is a huge issue with people putting their own issues with food on what is appropriate for growing children."

Totally agree with this.

BITCAT · 03/09/2016 11:48

I've told my dd2s school it's my choice what she eats. They don't have a choice.
I think it's ridiculous. Fruit can attack the enamel on their teeth. Cheese is fine I. Would say for a growing child..high in.calcium and they need fat at that age.
They've gone too far with this healthy eating. Nothing wrong with cheese in moderation. It's a few chunks nor a whole block fgs.

BITCAT · 03/09/2016 12:04

Now I often buy small chunks of cheese in packs and it's stays in the fridge for everyone if they fancy a snack. We also have a massive delivery of fruit every weds from our local farm shop. They eat very healthy. So we do give a small treat after tea. Homemade pudding or cake or small pack of mini biscuits. I think banning foods makes the kids want it more. By allowing a little bit..it allows them to make the right choices themselves. Which mine do most of the time. They would go for jacket spuds over chips. Fruit over sweets 9 out of 10 times.

SooBee61 · 03/09/2016 13:03

How dare they question what you send your child to school with!

booellesmum · 03/09/2016 13:07

I would say small amounts of cheese are fine, and cheese was allowed at our primary.
They did, however, tell DD that her home made popcorn with nothing added to it was not allowed. :(

Galdos · 03/09/2016 13:14

Send in Gorgonzola

Ego147 · 03/09/2016 13:16

What is the actual purpose of a mid morning snack at school?

I don't remember having snacks at school - just milk in infants.

PacificDogwod · 03/09/2016 13:29

That is a very good question too, Ego Grin

Scarydinosaurs · 03/09/2016 13:33

ego did you not get a break time snack? I had babybel. Used to squidge the wax and make my own dice.

Lweji · 03/09/2016 13:33

What is the actual purpose of a mid morning snack at school?

I always had a snack.
School often started at 8 and ended at 1pm.
The snack is to keep the children alert and happy till lunch.
