To be waiting for the massive B******s?

It's late August. This time every year as the nights start to get darker, giant, evil spiders of doom run at me across the living room carpet. They lurk next to my bed, in the hallway and climb the curtains. They barricade themselves in the downstairs loo waiting for me to inadvertently lock myself in a tiny space and spot them, mid terrified wee. I have been waiting for two weeks now and it hasn't happened yet. Has anyone else been afflicted with the influx of gigantic leggy knobs?

My cats are fucking useless at killing the sodding things, they just bat them around

Beardsareweird · 01/09/2016 20:56

My cat is an excellent spider mangler. I can hear him running aorund at night, tracking them down. He likes to mangle them and leave them on the kitchen floor for me to sweep up. My DH doesn't mind spiders at all, and he has to deal with them if the cat can't be arsed.

ladyjadey · 01/09/2016 22:03

I've just spotted the second bastard. I'm watching like a hawk now!

Can I also respectfully request that people do not post pics of the evil things? I can't look but I can't not look either! The pics of bears are OK though. Much less alien-like.

Sympathies. We get an influx of big spiders around this time every year. Big fat ones.

Last year, unbeknown to either of us, one crawled into my DS' school bag and spent the day at school with him. Imagine our delight when he popped out like some horrible jack in the box at home time.

Titflaps · 01/09/2016 22:43

I obviously jinxed myself by posting a pic - we just evicted two massive buggers within 5 minutes of one another Confused

Ledkr · 01/09/2016 23:12

We had them early this year, I was fuming.
Why do people say they kill flies? The ones in my house skittle sround on the floor, the flies however fly around in the air, I cannot understand how the two ever meet.

Ledkr · 01/09/2016 23:13

I might get a cat in every room

RoystonVaseySmegHead · 01/09/2016 23:29

ledkr I like your thinking 😁 Apparently one ran at dm yesterday and it got an ass-whooping in the form of a racket from ds's swing ball set.... Never saw it coming the hairy little bastard.. Then the rest is a mystery as fm had to leave the room because the cat tried to eat it's mangled flattened corpse 😷

I'm in Northern Alberta, in Fort McMurray. The wildfire that destroyed 2,200 homes here also destroyed 600,000 hectares of forest. It's pushed bears into the city on a final hunt for food before winter sets in.
That photo was taken last night in my friends back garden, just down the street from us. He's clearly doing ok for himself, raiding bins and stealing fruit from trees. Estimates put him at somewhere around 4-500lbs. Whilst it's not fun having them so close I hope he makes it to hibernate before fish & wildlife catch up with him.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 02/09/2016 05:20

They will attempt to relocate a couple of times but after that they will be shot.

There have also been cougar sightings. Two of my husbands running buddies saw it. F&W thought they were taking the piss until they saw it too.

LazySusan11 · 02/09/2016 06:06

I am petrified of spiders, last year we had one so big a pint glass wouldn't fit over all it's legs. I'm told pressure washing the eaves helps prevent them. I am meant to be clearing out the spare room of all our clutter..now I'm too scared I just know a family of hairy freaks have moved in.

Rozdeek · 02/09/2016 11:36

I've just ordered a spider catcher off amazon.

I'm sitting on edge in my living room, I know the little fuckers are here.

I had one in my hair once Shock

SaucyJack · 02/09/2016 11:48

That bear is quite cute.

(When you're sat 5000 miles away merely looking at pictures)

Aworldofmyown · 02/09/2016 20:08

We just had one gallop across the floor.

The bastard was tapping the glass DP threw over it.

shudder

paddypants13 · 03/09/2016 17:05

Dh had to kill one yesterday. He tried to blackmail me for sexual favours in return for killing it but I wasn't having any of that nonsense and it was promptly despatched.

I would prefer him to put them outside but I cannot go near them so I have no choice but to leave him to it.

missyB1 · 03/09/2016 20:07

Husband has evicted four in 48 hours! I spotted one in the bathroom at 3am last night when I was having a wee, it was so bloody enormous that I could see it in the dark (I hadn't switched the light on!) 😱

e1y1 · 04/09/2016 02:30

You're welcome

chewingawasp · 04/09/2016 02:39

Ds has just woken everyone as there was a spider "as big as my face" in his room ShockConfused
I have left dh to sort it and will try to get back to sleep.....

hollinhurst84 · 04/09/2016 03:39

I came home from work once and went to go upstairs. My path was blocked by a spider sitting on the stairs eyeballing me
Had to knock on a neighbours door having never met them before. He laughed and came armed with a pint glass
Next words from him "Jesus wept, I'm getting the kids to look at this one!"
So we have me, neighbour, 3 kids, neighbours wife and some random person all staring at this spider. It didn't fit under a pint glass Shock so he had to get a bowl. I made him take it down the road Blush

Kathysclown · 04/09/2016 06:07

Had a huge one run over my hand in bed last week, and then behind my pillow, edging down the crack between mattress and headboard - terrifying! Managed to get it to make a run for it and got it......... I did scream a fair bit!

Spotted one running across the bedroom floor last night, they can run solo fast! Managed to get rid of that one too, but I couldn't sleep well last night, and kept scanning the floor and walls for any others. At about 4am I gave up trying to sleep and was mumsnetting on my phone, still in bed. Tortured myself by reading this thread, and read a post about one hanging down from the ceiling. I glanced up, and there, approximately above my navel and about a meter above, was a black wriggling spider! I have never moved so fast!! I am now relocated to the kitchen.

I have just moved back to the UK from abroad, and I don't remember this many spiders - is it going to be like this all winter?!

zerrydeeer · 04/09/2016 07:48

Haha, they are harmless creatures for the most part & they have never bothered me. But when I was a child, my dad used to make me hold them, no matter what size (if one was caught). I do the same now with my young dc. There was one (huge spider) in the bath the other day, and my dc said 'mum, shall we put it out the window together'?!

They are strange creatures but nothing to be afraid of (thanks to dad).

awfulpersonme · 04/09/2016 08:37

I know logically they're harmless but that doesn't really help with a phobia.

And I have no idea why really as I never saw anyone scared of spiders growing up, my mum holds them no problem.

dementedma · 04/09/2016 08:46

Spider invasion only lasts a couple of weeks but it is the worst time of year for those of us who are terrified of the fuckers. I am on full scan procedure at the moment, glancing up from books or tablet every few minutes to check security!

zerrydeeer · 04/09/2016 08:55

Awfulpersonme, yes, you are right. It doesn't help with a phobia.
