There is building works going on around Wolverhampton.

Massive changes to the local shopping centres with lots of closed down shops and noise.

There are attempts at brightening up the space with 'art'.

One shop space has been turned into a 'gallery' 'curated' by students/recent graduates from the local uni which isn't much more than decals and picture boards stuck to the walls.

There has been work done on murals in the wider open space with one taking one woman days to produce.

Days of climbing up and down a ladder surrounded by barriers, carefully painting a large mural with a huge blank space in rhe middle.

On and off, she has spent weeks working on this opus, painstakingly creating the city's motto against a backdrop of a hellish industrial backdrop.

Today I saw the finished, um, thing.

It turns out she's been working on panels elsewhere to stick on the blank bird/angel space in the middle of the mural.

Ladies and gentlemen!

Allow me to present Wolverhampton's one and only

FLAMING PISSED OFF TURKEY FROM HELL

Seriously?

WTAF?

To my eye, it honestly looks like a not particularly talented teenager had a go a scaling up a picture she saw in an art book.

Please tell me this wasn't paid for???

I quite like it too. It's modern not realistic. Appropriately so since the Phoenix isn't real. The colours are great.

But I sympathise over the damaged pavements and the market in portacabins. Hoping those are only temporary.

pepperpot99 · 31/08/2016 08:28

I agree that it's the language and sneering tone which is needlessly nasty.
My dc brought thousands of drawing and pictures home from school over the years which , technically/artistically speaking were probably also 'shit' but I would never have said that to them Sad.

It's a picture. It's bright and cheerful. It isn't offensive on any level. Get over yourself.

rainbowstardrops · 31/08/2016 08:28

I quite like it really.
Not sure I'd go to the effort of slating it on an Internet forum but each to their own Confused

LumpyMcBentface · 31/08/2016 08:28

You want shit art?

I offer you this monstrosity. It used to go up and down and hush water every few minutes. Then they tinted it off for a few years so it stayed still. And recently they tore it down and put some trees in its place.

All at the cost to the council of hundreds of thousands.

OP, you must sit and look at it for a long time. Absorb yourself in the artwork until it speaks to you. Let your emotions run free.

Hate, anger, disgust (discust even), whatever you feel is fine. The artist will have achieved their goal of reaching out for your deepest emotions.

MLG - you're right on the trade union banners, that's a better reference than my suggestions. I also laughed at the new town motto.

MLGs · 31/08/2016 08:32

peonie how sad that you took your children to the Tate to laugh at the work.

Lweji · 31/08/2016 08:32

This is shit art.

Someone else mentioned the trade union banners first though hey, but as I'd thought it too I decided I might as well chime in.

scarednoob · 31/08/2016 08:36

I must admit that when I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was a particularly hairy ginger ballbag.

but when I enlarged it - ok not my taste, but I don't think it's terrible. certainly it's a million times better than the stick turkey I could produce!

NotMe321 · 31/08/2016 08:37

It does look a bit like a plucked hairy turkey.

mynamesnotMa · 31/08/2016 08:37

Looks like an orange bear with legs akimbo.. the birds head the light out of darkness. .clever.

To all the people who say that the artist has put something in a public space so people can say what they like, what is the difference between putting a painting in a public space and wearing an outfit in a public space? The general opinion would be that a stranger telling you you looked shit would be that they are rude. I'm not against criticism at all, I don't think saying 'that's shit' is interesting, clever or funny, but of course people have the right to their opinion. I'm genuinely interested in where the line is.

TheZeppo · 31/08/2016 08:44

I like the wings. The colours are lovely. Always been a fan of our motto.

I understand your views on Wolverhampton. It has felt for a really long time like it has been dying- cash converters, charity and pound shops aside. I also think the council has made some very questionable decisions (I had a lot of family in different t jobs with the council who have been treated badly).

BUT it feels like they're finally trying to change things for the better. I'm optimistic.

I don't think you're a bully. I suspect you were just trying to make people smile. Like the mural, a tad misjudged 😃

I also quite like Heath Town 😃 used to love the swimming baths!

Cantusethatname · 31/08/2016 08:44

That's what interests me too - not the art, but what people think is right to say or not say.
I think for me the line is public/personal. So if someone was wearing an outfit I hated I would never dream of commenting. If it was on show in a shop window or in a magazine I would. So if this artist had completed her work and it was on her own living room wall then it's personal. In public, well, it's public.

HeyRobot · 31/08/2016 08:46

MLG - I had them in mind but could only think of town and pit banners when I previously posted, so thank you. Also thank you to the other poster who said the same but I missed

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2016 08:50

Gosh what a nasty thread Hmm

HeyRobot · 31/08/2016 08:52

Cantuse - I think it is an interesting question. Your distinction makes sense but even minor celebrities are photographed and critiqued on what they wear when they run out for some milk first thing in the morning. This also applies to people who are known for nothing to do with what they wear. Do you think this is a grey area? I'm not trying to be argumentative or prove a particular point, I hope it doesn't sound like that. I also don't think there's a clear or right answer, just interested.

BalloonSlayer · 31/08/2016 08:55

I think its lovely!

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2016 08:56

Anyway, how do all you artistic geniuses (genii?) know definitively that a Phoenix doesn't look like that since it's a made up thing anyway.

This is definitely about having a pop at Wolverhampton. It seems like people find the West Midlands such an easy target. It really is beyond boring and very lazy.

GoblinLittleOwl · 31/08/2016 08:57

I like it.
Does the Art College still organise the Nativity outside St. Peter's Cathedral? Many years ago they produced one featuring starving refugees which caused a sensation.
