Is this poor work for someone who is studying/has studied fine art? **title edited by MNHQ at OP's request**

There is building works going on around Wolverhampton.

Massive changes to the local shopping centres with lots of closed down shops and noise.

There are attempts at brightening up the space with 'art'.

One shop space has been turned into a 'gallery' 'curated' by students/recent graduates from the local uni which isn't much more than decals and picture boards stuck to the walls.

There has been work done on murals in the wider open space with one taking one woman days to produce.

Days of climbing up and down a ladder surrounded by barriers, carefully painting a large mural with a huge blank space in rhe middle.

On and off, she has spent weeks working on this opus, painstakingly creating the city's motto against a backdrop of a hellish industrial backdrop.

Today I saw the finished, um, thing.

It turns out she's been working on panels elsewhere to stick on the blank bird/angel space in the middle of the mural.

Ladies and gentlemen!

Allow me to present Wolverhampton's one and only

FLAMING PISSED OFF TURKEY FROM HELL

Seriously?

WTAF?

To my eye, it honestly looks like a not particularly talented teenager had a go a scaling up a picture she saw in an art book.

Please tell me this wasn't paid for???

I think it looks unfinished where is the definition? It just looks fat and kind of like a butterfly more than a phoenix she needs to define it more extend the wings use more colours make it clear what it is

ImNotJoeMyNameIsHarry · 31/08/2016 05:27

Looking at it I think the artist needed to define the body more. It blends in with the wings making it appear like a different bird. However I do think it could also be a very excellent turkey or maybe it was meant to look like a mix like a merger of different species coming together.

WinterIsHereJon · 31/08/2016 05:35

I like it!

timeforabrewnow · 31/08/2016 05:35

Oh get over yourselves.

God, that's dreadful. It seems that culturally we are on an inexorable race to the bottom.

It's one picture on a wall. So what.

ScarletForYa · 31/08/2016 05:40

OP can be 'mean' if she likes. Public art needs at least to be decorative. This isn't. It's bad.

If you put yourself out there as an artist you need to expect criticism.

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 31/08/2016 05:46

Councils have destroyed town centres with their parking restrictions, charges and fines.. Then they blame businesses who understand that shoppers want easy access to shops and to park where they can see the shops,,, not dustbins..

The council workers solution if to pay someone to do a bit or art .. which will create a living virbant town centre... yeh right...

VioletBam · 31/08/2016 05:49

Scarlet that's a matter of opinion. You think it's not decorative but someone does. I don't think it's half as bad as people have made out and she would have submitted drawings before it was commissioned.

Tootoofunny · 31/08/2016 05:51

Criticism is saying 'i don't like it because the body blah blah...' Calling it shit is mean. Artists aren't out there just so you can be mean. I wouldn't post a picture of you at work and say what you do is shit.

That said yes op has a right to be a mean ghastly bully

VioletBam · 31/08/2016 06:04

OP if you care about art being "up to your standard" as much as you seem to do, would you mind the artist reading what you've written?

1frenchfoodie · 31/08/2016 06:40

I like it, definately beats bare boards, is eye catching and vibrant. I've no idea why the speed of production is of interest to you. In any case it looks pretty big.

Fishface77 · 31/08/2016 06:49

Isn't it supposed to be a Phoenix rising from the ashes rather than a turkey??

BastardGoDarkly · 31/08/2016 06:51

I think calling it shit on the internet is mean though.

Ok, it's not perfect, but the overall look is alright?

teacher54321 · 31/08/2016 06:58

What a lot of trouble you've gone to to be so unkind. of course you are entitled to your opinion and that's fine. What i find uncomfortable in reading your OP is the venom. It's an art student who's probably done it for pretty much nothing and it's a temporary installation to cover up some empty shops. I don't think it deserves such rage and vitriol.

whirlygirly · 31/08/2016 07:01

What an unnecessarily cruel post. Whether it's to your taste or not, this was several weeks of someone's hard work and the tone of this is just plain nasty.

SickInBedOnTwoChairs · 31/08/2016 07:03

It has a cool mohawk.

SickInBedOnTwoChairs · 31/08/2016 07:06

Also no one knows what a Phoenix looks like as they are mythical. They may actually look like this. I think the subject is poor but the execution is good. The link between a Phoenix rising from fire and darkness into light is a mix of metaphors too far. I think slagging off someone's hard work on the internet is poor form though and I disagree about the OP having the 'right' to bully someone ffs.

Adnerb95 · 31/08/2016 07:08

Fishface is right - this is a Phoenix. The quote makes that clear - and I think it is pretty good. But I wouldn't seriously critique it unless I had some expertise in art - and maybe the OP hasn't demonstrated that to us yet?

OhTheRoses · 31/08/2016 07:08

If it's the city's emblem and motto it's mpt all that negotiable.

Personally I'm not keen on Banksy or the stuff at Waterloo. Wouldn't bother making a list about it though.

pepperpot99 · 31/08/2016 07:13

I think it's quite nice. The colours are warm and vibrant and the caption is optimistic. It's better than looking at Tracy Emin's unmade bed let's face it.

luciole15 · 31/08/2016 07:20

You could propose an alternative. Why not upload a sketch here for us to look at? We could help you refine your design and technique with critiques as educated and constructive sounding as yours.

HeyRobot · 31/08/2016 07:21

Very bizarre how people get so worked up over visual art. Do you also get angry about every film, book and to show you're not keen on?

Cantusethatname · 31/08/2016 07:23

I don't think the post is bullying. Why are her comments and opinions worth any less than say those of a professional critic in the Sunday Times? It's a piece of art, it's open to criticism as a piece of art, and the OP has provided criticism.

HeyRobot · 31/08/2016 07:25

TV show - autocorrect says no to screen time, obviously

AbyssinianBanana · 31/08/2016 07:28

"If you put yourself out there as an artist you need to expect criticism."

If you want to criticise, state your opinion to the artist directly. Would the OP say this to the artist's face? Nope.

But what a mighty cunty rant from a coward expressing her "opinion" on an anonymous forum.

Horrible.

MakeJam · 31/08/2016 07:29

The Hepworth sculpture will be going back on display after the refurbishment.

I like the artwork. OP you were rather rude.
