To think Rheged is just a bit shit?

I've seen it mentioned on the the odd Lakes thread and as it's near our holiday home we thought we would go look.

Hotter than the bloody sun inside, pricey cinema, "artisan" cafe which I took to mean "wander round looking at all the mini blackboards reading the offerings" - where's the menu I can just stand or sit and look at?

Stairs everywhere. Half the lifts only service half the floors and the other rhalf serve the other floors.

Mega mega pricey kids toy shop. Soft play was a pay one but again was like a sauna.

Outside castle play area said it cost 1.50 had to go in and pay at reception no one actually there checking tickets etc. Big slide boarded up.

I just felt hot and bothered all.morning and entirely non plussed.

Oh dear. I live near Rheged and go quite a bit. Castle outside is free for my daughter.
We go to kids cinema on a Saturday which is £2 each. I like the shops and cafe there.
Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

The geek in me assumed you were referring to the Dark Ages Welsh-speaking kingdom (which I assume lacked a range of soft play options), and I was going to agree. Gwynedd was clearly superior.

Yeah it is tbh. We didn't pay for the castle thing though, we didn't realise at first then decided there was no point trying to find someone to pay.

We went the other day as we live fairly close by. It's not great to be honest, but dd2 enjoyed making her name out of Lego and spent a couple of hours playing on the outside castle. It's not a proper day out though IMO.

I just went outside there once in order to fill up my car with petrol. I can remember being shouted at by some man in the petrol station - for what I do not know. I didn't actually go into the Rheged Centre - and tbh I didn't realise quite what it was for?

FithColumnist - lol I knew Rheged existed in Arthurian times but didn't realise it was Welsh speaking!!

I went about 10 years ago and loved it purely because of the Paper Mill shop where I could fill up a box with paper. That was literally the highlight of my trip. I remember nothing else.

The amount of times we've stopped at Tebay services and seen leaflets for it and I've thought I must remember it if we ever holiday in the Lake District (we're usually heading for Scotland). Least now I'll know I'm not missing anything!

YANBU. I went earlier this summer, I was visiting a friend and she suggested as a nice rainy day activity for the kids but we both felt really let down. It's all massively expensive, busy and poorly run, we had to ask repeatedly for them to even open the castle during a longish break in the rain, the soft play wouldn't have kept our two 8-year-olds plus one five year-old happy for five mins, we did do some nice pottèry paintings but there were really long queues at all the cafes which didn't seem very well staffed.

We've stopped there as an alternative to the motorway services pre DC and I think YANBU. Seemed to be little there. Given where it is, perhaps the soft play is the best around??

YANBU - I went years ago and was distinctly underwhelmed.

We've done Long Meg, and we've been to an adventure farm.

Planning on doing Lowther Castle tomorrow or the next day.

What the...is any of this in Britain? or modern times? What's going on?

Loather Castle is great though!

The new wooden castle is supposed to be fab but a bit pricey.
Steamer on Ullswater is great on a nice day.
Cafe lovely at Lowther.

I've been twice because it was rainy, again, and a bit like labour, time had softened the memory. It was shite. Again.

It's OK I suppose, it suits us to stop there occasionally but we always argue on how to actually pronounce the name of the bloody place.
