Just because I can BF anywhere doesn't mean I will.

I've been following the 'chucked out of west end show for BF' thread with interest.
It's legal to BF pretty much everywhere but I wondered where others avoid feeding or even taking their baby?

I wouldn't take my baby to
The theatre (adult only show) 😉
Loud music Concert
Nandos near me (and similar stuffy, smelly, overcrowded, dirty restaurants.)
Public toilets
Exam hall
Staff meeting/presentation

I wouldn't BF
in moving car
at side of swimming pool
at the side of a motorway
In a salon whilst having my hair/ nails done.

Basically, anywhere I myself wouldn't usually eat food, or dirty, noisy, smelly or overcrowded places. Adult or particularly formal places.

IABU to think that despite the law, just because you can doesn't automatically mean you should?

Soubriquet · 28/08/2016 12:33

Oh man! That's why I keep getting cats bum mouth from everyone. Poor Dh. He's going to have to go hungry

JasperDamerel · 28/08/2016 12:39

Are toddlers ok?

couldntlovethebearmore · 28/08/2016 12:40

I would not breastfeed in a pool, in case I looked an awful fool
I would not breastfeed on a bus, it may create an awful fuss
I would not breastfeed on a plane, I could not breastfeed in the fast lane
I would not breastfeed in a rocket, ive ran out of rhymes- oh fuck it

alltouchedout · 28/08/2016 12:43

elodie no, but I was close to it! I'm not the best traveller anyway but I did not find that helped me not to feel sick...

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 12:44

Toddlers are positively encouraged.
Especially if they announce their intention to feed. Loudly.
Catsbummer public service announcement IYSWIM?
I mean, they need something to froth over. And it gives poor Jeannie from the Bingo and her toy boy a bit of a break.

MLGs · 28/08/2016 12:51

You can't bf in moving car as others have said because they child wouldnt be on their seat, and for me there's no way I could lean over.

I don't see why you can't do it by the swimming, if you go a bit away from the actual water. A lot of pools have seating right near he pool for adults observing older children (or additional adults like grandparents) to watch, and sometimes serve drinks there. My ds had milk in a sippy cup there the other week while we were waiting for his sister and her mate to finish long after he'd had enough (2 and 8).

MLGs · 28/08/2016 12:52

My friend and I had tea which was being sold there.

MLGs · 28/08/2016 12:53

Love the "breastfeeding without and infant idea" Grin

MetalMidget · 28/08/2016 12:54

I will breastfeed in the park
I will not wait until it's dark

I will breastfeed in Ikea
Amongst Malm and Lack, with no fear

I will not breastfeed in the loo,
I would not eat there, would you?

I will not breastfeed on a bungee cord,
Nor whilst crossing a fast flowing fjord

I will not breastfeeding whilst battling orcs,
Nor whilst punching angry storks

I would breastfeed on the moon,
But we cannot get there anytime soon

MetalMidget · 28/08/2016 12:55

Autocorrect ruined my rhyme!

FLOUNCES

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 12:57

fast flowing fjord
Respect.

Binglesplodge · 28/08/2016 12:59

I've fed my DS in many odd places but I wanted to just please ask you not to breast feed in a moving car please. The weight of your body in the event of a collision would be more than enough to kill your baby. Please wait until you're somewhere safe.

Binglesplodge · 28/08/2016 13:00

Too many "please"s in that comment. Sorry, should have proofread.

LumpyMcBentface · 28/08/2016 13:03

I've breastfed a toddler on the bus
It didn't cause a single fuss
I've fed in shops and parks and zoos
And never made the daily news
In fact I've fed in lots of places
And never encountered catsbumfaces.

OlennasWimple · 28/08/2016 13:16

Gah, I can't do Dr Seuss rhymes, sorry, but my personal "not suitable for BF places" list was very short:

  • moving car
  • swimming pool
  • toilets

Really can't think of anywhere else where I would have had my baby with me but not fed them (including places where babies aren't normally seen, such as posh restaurants and bars, House of Commons...)

elodie2000 · 28/08/2016 13:35

Too many clever people on this thread! 😄 @ Metal and Lumpy

So glad people have got the point of the OP! Turns out toilets are not a favourite ! I'm going to add feeding rooms (next to toilets usually) to my list! Unless they're lovely & comfy... A white stuffy box room with a single plastic chair - no.

Anywhere it is acceptable for a baby to be (and I don't mean some random mumsnetters definition of acceptable I mean mine along with the owner of the premises/event/function/what ever) is also an acceptable place to feed them.

Bearfrills · 28/08/2016 17:09

A white stuffy box room with a single plastic chair - no.

Not to mention that there usually a changing table and overflowing bin full of dirty nappies right next to the plastic chair. I fucking hate feeding rooms, they're like little caves of shame. Nothing beats eau de baby shit and loneliness.

I've fed everywhere it acceptable to take a baby, including on a bus. I wouldn't feed in a moving car, in a toilet or in a feeding room.

MetalMidget · 28/08/2016 18:09

I think I'm unusually lucky with our local shopping Centre - the nursing room is separate from the toilet and changing facilities, with comfy chairs, Tommee Tippee bottle warmers, and a water cooler. The changing facilities are also separate (so dad's can change as well!) with four changing bays, and there's a parent and child loo (large room with two toilets side by side, one full size and one smaller one!)

CountessOfStrathearn · 28/08/2016 18:33

I have fed in a nursing room once but that was partly because it gave me a little break from my fussing (like in the over-considerate guests thread) PILs in John Lewis!

I have BF during a smear test, while I had my hair cut, in church, at the registry office, at the doctors, in all sorts of restaurants, loads of places.

In 4+ years (cumulative) of BFing, the only negative comment I have ever had was from my mother who thought I should put a muslin over my baby's head. I declined and it was never mentioned again.

TheHubblesWindscreenWipers · 28/08/2016 18:37

Perfectly possible to feed a baby with the baby safely strapped in a rear facing car seat and the owner of the boobs strapped into the middle seat next to them.

I've done it many a time. Car Boob has saved many car trips from being, literally, hell on wheels.

If you can safely take a baby to a place you can feed them there. I'm sure there are some exceptions, there usually are, but in general, that seems to be the rule, no?

Fed loads of places, never a batted eyelid here in Sweden. The only place I've ever had comments was in a cafe in England.

r2d256 · 28/08/2016 18:43

I've BF in a hair salon, didn't see why not ?

I'd also BF at the side of the motorway behind the barrier if we had broken down and baby was EBF Smile

I've also BF nandos ? What's wrong with nandos ??? Shock

Spudlet · 28/08/2016 18:45

There are feeding rooms and feeding rooms... John Lewis in Leicester for example - light, airy, water, comfortable chairs, away from the changing area. V good for an easily distracted baby (like DS), so I tend to pop in so he gets a proper feed. John Lewis in Norwich - dark, cramped, stuffy, no water, no windows, hard seats. Shite, frankly. I'll not go there again. DS just has to snack until I can get home for a proper feed.
