Since using Facebook, I've noticed a lot of people pronounce things wrongly,
Discusing instead of disgusting
Pacific instead of specific
Brought instead of bought
Tenderhooks instead of tenterhooks
and this ones my favourite....
chester draws instead of chest of drawers

It make me wonder if I'm unknowingly guilty of some without knowing ?
list the ones you've noticed, don't forget to own up to any your guilty of, I will.

It bothers me when people say "orientated" instead of "oriented".

Also, "disorientated" instead of "disoriented".

TheWitTank · 26/08/2016 00:57

There is a dealer who very regularly advertises her horses and ponies for sale on facebook. She frequently describes them as being "bombproof in traffic, goes past ARCTIC lorries". Drives me mad! ARTIC not ARCTIC. As in articulated.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 26/08/2016 01:11

Dowager I always pronounced clique as cleek and was deeply offended by click so I looked it up and annoyingly click seems to be an acceptable alternative.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 26/08/2016 01:12

My dad is obsessed with people failing to enunciate 'collapse'. Buildings don't claps.

cornishglos · 26/08/2016 02:52

It's a mind field.

Arealhumanbeing · 26/08/2016 03:13

Generally when they mean genuinely. Drives me fucking insane.

Wet your appetite instead of whet.

Random words replaced by 'thingy'.

e.g. 'I'm not really all that thingy. Do you know what I mean?'

I really don't Angry.

littleprincesssara · 26/08/2016 03:27

The 'official' pronounciation of niche is in fact nitch. Neesh is a newer adoption, although nowadays it's considered widely acceptable.

Click and cleek are equally permitted.

avamiah · 26/08/2016 03:28

What about Scone?
I was having afternoon tea in London last week and I asked the waiter if there was any cheese Scones?
My friend looked at me and said why are you saying Scones, it's Scons.lol.
Any thoughts

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/08/2016 04:54

It's scons to me, but I'm pretty sure there are national/regional variations.

KoalaDownUnder · 26/08/2016 05:15

'Take a sneak peak at our new winter line'

Aaaaaaaaaargh...

Gran22 · 26/08/2016 06:01

We/they was, I/he/she were.

Gran22 · 26/08/2016 06:07

Avamiah - it's scons for me too. But then I'm Scottish, we never call them scones.

Another is moot, not mute point.

Caffeinator · 26/08/2016 06:25

Athaletics
Triathalon

A number of people where I live say nused instead of used. That one irritates me greatly.

molyholy · 26/08/2016 06:53

I have seen on mn 'Pre Madonna' instead of prima donna.

KoalaDownUnder · 26/08/2016 07:06

I's. Confused

As in, 'Hubby and I's favourite movie'.

acasualobserver · 26/08/2016 07:26

It bothers me when people say "orientated" instead of "oriented".

It shouldn't bother you - they are right too.

Ackvavit · 26/08/2016 07:30

Pet hate - it's a spell check auto spell problem really - defiantly when they meant to type definitley. Without fail the whole sentence is then out of context.....especially on Tripadvisor....." I am defiantly never eating there again Grin

Beardsareweird · 26/08/2016 07:59

I use a Slimming World furm quite often, and peoplpe there frequently refer to 'loosing weight' and 'falling off the bandwagon'. Some people also call the club "Slimmers World" despite being members themselves.

Beardsareweird · 26/08/2016 08:01

*people, obviously.

Also, near me is a white goods stall in a locla market which advertises 'tumble dryairs'

Beardsareweird · 26/08/2016 08:02

*local

Typo trauma Blush

19lottie82 · 26/08/2016 08:05

Already been mentioned, but when people say "brought" instead of "bought"....... Arrrgh!!!! Angry

Are these people stupid???!

paap1975 · 26/08/2016 08:18

Ambience is French, for the OP who wasn't sure

Ham69 · 26/08/2016 08:28

Pronouncing the letter h haitch instead of aitch. Even teachers at my school do this.
Croissant pronounced as it is written.

Pineappletastic · 26/08/2016 09:03

To/Too confusion.
