To those who have been in both sides of the spectrum.

jane proof of how ageing slap and a sulk are!

MargotLovedTom · 23/08/2016 16:25

I don't know who the ballerina is - how old is she because to me she looks scrawny and haggard (not that a ballerina is ever going to look chunky!)?

currentlyunavailable · 23/08/2016 16:34

I look A LOT younger slim. Being a bit chubby adds between 15 to 20 years to my appearance, it's awful.

I don't think there are any rules. I have seen some famous people looking either way when they were pregnant.

Dogsmom · 23/08/2016 17:17

Thinner.
I've lost and regained the same 4 stone a few times over the years and always get told I look younger when I'm a size 12 instead of a 16/18.

I do wonder with those who've lost weight as opposed to always being slim if we start making more effort as we slim, I know I do, I buy more clothes, do my make up more often and generally pamper myself more.

DerelictMyBalls · 23/08/2016 17:24

Definitely plump. I have quite an angular face which can look harsh and gaunt when I'm at my thinnest.

I think it also has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself: if you hate being fat/skinny, you may take care of your appearance less as a result.

BlueFolly · 23/08/2016 17:52

Thing is, even if you look younger when you're fat, you still look fat.

I know someone who lost a lot of weight recently, and yes, technically her face looks older. However she looks great, and much younger overall than she did before because how good you look isn't just about the number of wrinkles on your face.

specialsubject · 23/08/2016 17:54

The ballerina is 52. My point is that she appears in an ad for anti ageing cream ( no such thing of course) with a scowl, blackened hair and a ton of harsh slap and looks mid sixties.

Advertising at its best..

CoolToned · 23/08/2016 20:00

I guess it depends on the shape of the face then? Round baby-faced like me look fatter older but then younger when closer to ideal weight because the body looks younger and the face still is round.

oldlaundbooth · 23/08/2016 20:02

Definitely younger thinner.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/08/2016 20:37

I look worse thinner, I've got a long face and look terrible less than size 12-14 Confused

JaneJeffer · 23/08/2016 20:41

Yes special we have to keep smiling if possible!

Having dark hair is hard to manage when you start to go grey because if you have darker eyes it's hard to go lighter and expensive too!

Heidi41 · 23/08/2016 20:42

My face looks miles better now I am plump but I don't like feeling the way I do and would love to be lighter to feel better iyswim

oldlaundbooth · 23/08/2016 20:45

'I get all jowly and wide faced, with a matronly bosom, dinner lady arms and a big square backside. Look much younger and perkier with the weight off'

Margot This is me too!

YvaineStormhold · 23/08/2016 20:45

I look older carrying weight. Middle aged and frumpy.

It's crap.

bertsdinner · 23/08/2016 20:47

Im 48 and think I look younger thinner, when I was bigger (size 20), I had big jowls, which I think aged me.
I did look quite scrawny at one point, about a size 6 and had a bony chest, scrawny neck and looked gaunt with hollow cheekbones.
Im size 10 now and think I look better.

e1y1 · 23/08/2016 20:47

I've never changed weight, so can't say from my own experience.

However, when seeing other women doing weight loss, they look great of course after losing the weight, but they always, but always look older than they did before.

So from that, I would say you look younger with a bit of weight on you.

No hope for me them :(

WorraLiberty · 23/08/2016 20:53

I really don't think being overweight or thin makes anyone look particularly younger.

Most people in their late thirties and onwards (for example), will look as though they're in their late thirties and onwards.

And if by chance they don't, it'll be because they were blessed with youthful looks and that will be the same whether they're thin or overweight.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 23/08/2016 20:53

@MargotLovedTom
That is not the case. The ballerina looks lovely. She is poised and elegant and has a lovely face. Nice smile too.

But then when I lost weight (from 18/20 t0 12/14) my neck became a bit saggy!

OP posts:
americaandhawaii · 23/08/2016 21:19

Maybe the difference or 'problem' is if you were a certain weight and then lost some and became slimmer. If you were always slim then maybe you wouldn't appear as gaunt?

I'm very slim (too much, tried for 30 years to put on weight to no avail). I think I look fairly dreadful but I smile a lot and hope it detracts from the skinniness! My legs aren't bad either although people have told me before that I need to eat more Hmm. I think it ages me but probably look ok from behind.

MolesBreathless · 23/08/2016 21:50

I hate discussions like this, it's so very obvious that they are just thinly-veiled attempts to make overweight people feel better about themselves at the expense of those of normal weight.

I often wonder why people do this, both on here and irl? Do they think they're being oh so subtle and nobody else realises?

CoolToned · 23/08/2016 22:03

americaandhawaii

I think you're right! I think if people have always been slim, it does not matter, but for those of us who have been yoyo-ing, weight loss causes saggy skin. But then I think I look younger ten pounds overweight than 30 pounds overweight (now) and definitely younger than when I was 60 pounds overweight (2014)!

MolesBreathless -

I think that's a generalisation that's not always true. Like I mentioned, I think otherwise - overweight me looks much older than not-so-overweight me.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 23/08/2016 22:10

Do you mean 'younger' looking or better looking?

If someone has loose skin through yo-yo dieting, it shows whether they're overweight or slim.

And people of all ages can have loose/saggy skin due to dieting, so I'm not sure where younger/older comes into the looks?

CoolToned · 23/08/2016 22:18

I meant younger. Now that you mentioned it, also better looking. I have round face, the saggy skin is in my neck (it's not too bad, I think I just obsess on it so much - or maybe using it as an excuse not to lose weight again), so the face remains young but when just a bit overweight, it gets more definition, dimples show better, cheekbones show, no jowls too.

Hellomrbean · 23/08/2016 22:20

I think the ballerina looks old facially. She looks like she needs a good square meal and a good nights sleep.
My body looks younger thinner, but my face looks younger with a little more weight on.
