Mocking Hearing Inpaired

To be quite shocked that after a member of the public had posted that they had found a hearing aid and hoped to re-unite it with it's owner.. Our local school's SEN teacher commented 'Pardon?'

It was an opportunist joke. Probably thought more about how it would make her friend laugh, rather than upset the HI. I don't believe in calling out the angry mob for a silly comment. I can imagine they didn't mean to cause offence.

Heidi42 · 20/08/2016 20:19

It is not funny it's sick they are trying to be clever and looking like the twat they are I would report them to their head

I'm hearing impaired and I don't find that funny at all. YANBU.

ShockMe · 20/08/2016 20:22

Yorkie it was a comment on a Community page. Not to a friend. I know some people find those comments funny, I find the fact it is a primary SEN teacher making he comment a bit Hmm

And also, if they were just speaking to friends, it would be stupid, but in public it is bloody stupid!

Yes I would tell the head.

user1468407812 · 20/08/2016 20:26

I wouldn't go so far as to say that its sick, probably inappropriate at worst. I don't think the level of malice that is now being bestowed upon it was the intention of the SEN, but then I couldn't say for sure either way as I do not know this person!!!!!

YorkieDorkie · 20/08/2016 20:40

Thanks for the clarification OP. It was definitely careless given her job description. It's one of those classic scenarios where someone doesn't understand the risk they take on social media. I would say, a joke between friends wouldn't warrant a linch mob but a community group is a bit thoughtless.

YorkieDorkie · 20/08/2016 20:42

This is quite an "outing" thread so there's a possibility that she knows she's done wrong already! If she's a MNer that is...

MiscellaneousAssortment · 20/08/2016 20:44

The key here is that the "local school's SEN teacher" wrote it in public.

Very very poor and any trust or respect for her being able to deal with sn at school would evaporate.

It's a rubbish joke, not funny I mean, but quite mild and predictable...

However NOT appropriate for a sen teacher.

ShockMe · 20/08/2016 20:44

I would hope she does realise that yorkie. It seems at the moment on the social media page that she still thinks it's a funny joke.

OnionKnight · 20/08/2016 20:46

I'm deaf and I sniggered.

ShockMe · 20/08/2016 20:47

The fact that some PP's here are hearing impaired and don't find it at all funny makes me feel better about my feelings on the matter. I am fortunate that I don't have a child who requires her SEN support because if that was the case I think I would be quite upset!

OP posts:
ShockMe · 20/08/2016 20:49

But would it be ok for my children to snigger at your disability onion? I would hope to bring them up differently to that.

OP posts:
Heidi42 · 20/08/2016 21:19

THESILVERCHAIR I am completely deaf in my left ear and I do not find this funny at all it is very discriminating against me and others with hearing impairments. To think an SEN teacher is mocking this affliction is very upsetting when they are supposed to act as our advocates.

YorkieDorkie · 20/08/2016 21:28

Well let's hope she stumbles on your thread! Are you planning to bring it up with her?

DurhamDurham · 20/08/2016 21:32

I'm about to be fitted with my first pair and I don't find it offensive. I need help with hearing, I'm not ashamed of the fact and I've still got my sense of humour.....thankfully! Sometimes it's the only thing that gets me through the day.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 20/08/2016 21:34

I'm deaf in one ear, and wouldn't be offended by the 'pardon' wisecrack, (if it wasn't said by a teacher with Sen responsibilities).

However, I'm also very ill with a separate condition which means I can't walk more than a couple of meters and use a mobility scooter...

And I would absolutely be offended if someone cracked jokes about that.

In fact, I remember a 'dead' colleague singing 'jake the peg', when I started to get ill and was losing the use of one leg so was on crutches (& a lot in pain). I laughed along with it at the time, but it really, really hurt. It was 5 yrs ago now, still hurts, yet I'm sure I've had loads of 'oi cloth ears' types of comments and none have stuck like that.

I wonder why?

GreatPointIAgreeWithYouTotally · 20/08/2016 21:35

I'm deaf with a hearing aid and if I lost it I'd be very pleased if anyone gave it back, even if they said

'You don't look deaf' which is a let hate of mine. The only answer to which is 'you don't look prejudiced' but I'm too polite.

NeedACleverNN · 20/08/2016 21:38

I did actually lose my hearing aid once!

I was only young. I can't remember why I took it out but I put it in my pocket. Couldn't find it later and I cried. I had a spare at home but spare hearing aids never sound the same as your usual. Luckily, someone had handed it in to the police station and when I dropped into to see if it had been handed in, there it was

SonicSpotlight · 20/08/2016 21:40

Is no one going to pick up on pardon?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 20/08/2016 21:43

It is funny, but it's not something a SEN teacher should be cracking jokes about. I don't suppose.
However the world really has cracked it's face. You can't say anything without someone taking offence.

Boogers · 20/08/2016 21:43

In what way?

Acopyofacopy · 20/08/2016 21:51

Teachers all have been trained in social media conduct and this one has clearly no clue that her careless job is actually something she could be disciplined and/or sacked for. If you want her to get in trouble, send a screenshot to the head. That'll be a fun start to the school year...

Acopyofacopy · 20/08/2016 21:52

Careless joke
