I blame the format, MN is the least user friendly forum I've ever used and I've been online a long time. Not since newsgroups have I had to search through every post on a thread to catch up to where I was and see where it's moved on to. Even the bookmark option is unclear.

An investment in proper forum software that allows logged in users to go directly to unread posts in a thread would save all this placemarking.

I think the bookmark thing should be automatic. Makes it so much easier to start where you left off. I didn't know about it for years.

I think people often do it when there's an especially funny or interesting or poignant thread, so they can say "i was there" if it's ever nominated for classics.

I think it is quite rewarding for the OP to see so many people expressing interest, curiosity and enthusiasm . You don't place mark for yourself, you place mark to let everyone know you are here and watching!
