to myself for feeling guilty about wanting to spend on an expensive item

I was waiting for the price to go down, but there are only three left in the stores near me in my size.

It's a dress and it costs 179gbp.

That's the sort of dress I knocked off in a couple of hours for the girls when they were younger. Is it gold plated on the inside, or magic spells sewn into the seams.

Are you sure they haven't put the decimal point in the wrong place? £17.90 would be closer to what I'd expect to see.

Can't believe the miserable spoil sports on this thread! We all like different things. I still think if you really like it, go for it!

CoolToned · 17/08/2016 11:05

The fabric is similar to what I see from Karen Millen and Alannah Hill. It's cotton but it looks luxe in person. Sorry I don't know any UK shops with similar fabrics - maybe Miss Selfridge? It has a tag that says luxe European fabric or something like that.

I don't know how to sew so I really cannot create a dress like this.

It's overpriced you a long way. Sure you can find something better.

amusedbush · 17/08/2016 11:48

Way, way overpriced for what it is. No way I'd pay that - it looks like it came from Joy for £40.

pasturesgreen · 17/08/2016 11:55

While I agree it's expensive for what it is (a sleeveless cotton-mix dress after all), I you love it and can afford it, then absolutely go for it if you haven't already!

Nothing haunts us like the things we didn't buy, after all, and I think we can safely say we've all made some mad, love-at-first-sight purchase at some point!

CoolCarrie · 17/08/2016 15:32

Please go for it! And let us know when you do!

cardboardPeony · 17/08/2016 15:37

For those that do sew do you use a pattern or not? I'm pretty handy with sewing but haven't really done clothes before, more cushions, settle covers and curtains. I wouldn't have a clue where to start with clothes

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/08/2016 15:41

Some things are no pattern; recent tube skirt for example. Some things are a pattern; that dress would be for me.

CoolToned · 18/08/2016 06:57

I saw a dress a bit similar to the dress I want - it's not removable at the waist, it's in purple and pink, and is less expensive - around 100gbp.

I don't like purple, though.

Why are you feeling guilty about this? Can you genuinely not afford it? What would you spend the money on otherwise? Maybe you need to budget for "unnecessaries", and just buy stuff like this out of that budget, so you won't agonise over it.

Liiinoo · 18/08/2016 07:09

Buy it, bring it home, sleep on it. You can always return it if you get buyers remorse. But dont actually sleep on it or it will look like you've worn it and then they won't take it back.

maz210 · 18/08/2016 07:16

I was all set to say that you should buy it as you obviously really want.

I then went and looked at the dress and I'm sorry to say I really can't see what's so great about it. It doesn't look special enough to me to justify the price tag. Sorry, I know it's not what you want to hear.

CoolToned · 18/08/2016 09:25

Yeah I find it expensive too, but I really like it. I guess my taste is different. :)

Anyway, I might just buy it, sleep on it, and then reevaluate my decision, just like what Liiinoo suggested.

I have it on hold for me until tomorrow. I think the returns period is a month so that should be ample time to decide how I really feel about it. Similar incidents have happened in the past, wherein I crushed on something real hard, got it, then eventually ended up returning it. I also struggle with return shame, so that's another factor why I wanted to resist buying this.

OP it's your money. If you want the dress and can afford it then buy it!
You don't need anyone else's approval Smile

CoolToned · 18/08/2016 09:52

MrsGsnow18 - I was actually not seeking approval in this thread. At least not about the dress. But was genuinely curious if I was being unreasonable to myself for feeling guilty for wanting to spend that much. :)

Did you get it?

CoolToned · 18/08/2016 21:42

I'll get it tonight! :) Then I'll decide if I'll return it.

OP posts:
BikeGeek · 18/08/2016 21:54

Do you not think part of the guilt comes from not really believing it's worth it though?

I think if you really liked it and thought it was good value you wouldn't feel any guilt.

ThePinkOcelot · 18/08/2016 21:57

If you like it and can afford it, go on buy it!!
