At the age of 36 I've discovered that

  1. Shirley McClaine and Warren Beatty were brother and sister

  2. Camels store fat and not water in their humps.

People I've told about my discoveries have universally responded with 'well yeah, everyone knows that'.

Any other factoids you were well behind the curve with?

That marrows are big courgettes and not something completely different.

That's what I was told yesterday anyway. I'm still trying to process that one.

curlywillow · 17/08/2016 15:28

chickens most definitely do not lay soft shelled eggs. You have a problem there if they do.

DesolateWaist · 17/08/2016 15:42

The French for marrow is courge.

Now think about the word cigarettes.

MrsGsnow18 · 17/08/2016 15:44

I can't believe you can toast potato waffles!!
I have just read this entire thread and feel completely enlightened!!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 17/08/2016 16:58

Just to continue the Canadian theme I am in Cornwall Ontario just now! (Well actually just outside Lancaster if you want to be specific)

RE the Queen and Marilyn Monroe ring the same age - have you noticed that the Queen has got, and has had since the 1950s, the classic Marilyn Monroe hairstyle? That big roll at the top/front is classic Marilyn, I always presume the Queen had that style as it was high fashion in the 50s and has kept it as it is "her" style now (the roll goes well with towns and tiaras).

BalloonSlayer · 17/08/2016 17:12

Crowns and tiaras!

Silvercatowner · 17/08/2016 17:18

It was a revelation when I realised (about 6 months ago) that the little petrol pump icon on the car dashboard indicates which side of the petrol pump to park in order to fill up. That has been slightly life changing.

I also didn't realise that Arkansas and 'Arkinsaw' were the same place until not that long ago Blush.

Porcupinetree · 17/08/2016 17:44

I read through this thread purely to point out that if your chickens are laying soft eggs they are either severely calcium deficient, poorly or extremely stressed, but you probably know that by now.

Flisspaps · 17/08/2016 17:50

Dylan I've just learned that Colin Jackson's sister is Tess from Casualty!'

DesolateWaist · 17/08/2016 18:06

Can I call bingo first?

Also, this is not true of all cars. It might be true of your car and others you have owned but it is not true of all cars.

TroysMammy · 17/08/2016 18:10

If you stretch your arms out to the sides and measure from finger to finger that is how tall you are.

Unless you've got Marfans disease... Arms are longer than height amongst other symptoms.

silver

Until a few years ago I pronounced Southwark as it was written. I'd heard the place Suthock mentioned on the radio but never realised it and Southwark were one in the same.

desolate Which cars do not have it 'correct' and what is the arrow for? I agree not all cars have an arrow, but those that do must have it for a reason.

RainyDayBear · 17/08/2016 18:38

Daft one, but the penny only recently dropped for me that Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh is named that because Eeyore is the noise a donkey makes!

FullTimeYummy · 17/08/2016 18:41

If you stretch your arms out to the sides and measure from finger to finger that is how tall you are.

If I remember correctly, your arm span should be 1% greater than your height if you are a Caucasian woman, and 3% greater if you are a Caucasian man.

But admittedly there's no reason to know that

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 17/08/2016 18:42

And this is my daftest one yet, I'd probably burried it deep in my subconscious it so daft...

On the day that we moved to Scotland, i saw a Dyson airblade for the first time. For a good couple of years I thought they were a special 'Scottish style' of hand dryer.

It was only when I spent a significant amount of time back in England that I saw they had them there too.

Ninja12345 · 17/08/2016 18:56

Hope this helps - Raisin - red grape dried/ sultana - white grape dried

No idea about currants though. Maybe a smaller type of grape.

Pina64 · 17/08/2016 18:57

That breathing out the nostril fact has just blown my mind!

riceuten · 17/08/2016 19:00

Warren Beatty was the subject of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" and Mick Jagger sings backing vocals on that track.

ShtoppenDerFloppen · 17/08/2016 19:05

These are currantsome before they are dried. They are not grapes at all.

Stuff (trivia) that you should have known but didn't...
ShtoppenDerFloppen · 17/08/2016 19:05

*currants

"I agree not all cars have an arrow, but those that do must have it for a reason."

I think you're talking at cross purposes. The arrow does always point in the correct direction. However, there is a myth that the little picture of the petrol pump indicates which side the petrol cap is on, based on which side the nozzle is on the picture.
