Stuff (trivia) that you should have known but didn't...

At the age of 36 I've discovered that

  1. Shirley McClaine and Warren Beatty were brother and sister

  2. Camels store fat and not water in their humps.

People I've told about my discoveries have universally responded with 'well yeah, everyone knows that'.

Any other factoids you were well behind the curve with?

I can name all the English monarchs from William I up to Richard III, possibly up to Elizabeth I if I think really hard. Would massively struggle after that.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2016 15:38

Surely walkers did change their bags. When I was young green was cheese and onion and blue was salt and vinegar. Everyone knows that
400 year old sharks.....wtf?

Portsea (the majority of the city of Portsmouth) is an island. I should know - I live here. To get on/off you have to cross a bridge somewhere.

ThinkPinkStink · 16/08/2016 15:42

Laila Morse (Big Mo from Eastenders) is Gary Oldman's sister.

p.s. the toaster thing, re: minutes vs. toastiness - surely it's the same thing... A piece of toast toasted for 3 minutes will be less toasty than a piece of toast toasted for 4?

GerundTheBehemoth · 16/08/2016 15:44

There are way more than 50 species of bees. There are about 250 in the UK, and nearly 20,000 in the world.

iklboo · 16/08/2016 15:44

The Horrible Histories song about monarchs is the easiest way to learn them Grin

GerundTheBehemoth · 16/08/2016 15:50

And birds' eggs are hard-shelled when laid.

Wow Gerund! That's loads! I had never really thought about it before and just knew about honey bees and bumble bees until dh enlightened me - I never knew there were so many tho

Stealth no Walkers crisps have always been Cheese and Onion - blue & Salter and Vinegar - green.

Golden Wonder (who used to be a far bigger seller than they are now) have green for cheese and onion and blue for salt and vinegar. At a guess, that's how I think the confusion started.

I didn't know until a few years ago the raisins were dried grapes!!Blush

yellowandblue · 16/08/2016 15:57

That pineapples grow like this, not on actual trees! Found this out at the ripe old age of 36... It still rocks my world now when I think about it!

Sorry, Tea I thought you were disputing Grin

TeaStory · 16/08/2016 15:59

I'm sure someone will be along to dispute it, and dispute the Gibraltar one as well, very soon AgentJ. 😊

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 16/08/2016 16:02

And speaking of Laila Morse, her stage name was chosen by Isabella Rosselini when she was going out with Gary Oldman: it is an anagram of Mia Sorella - my sister.

AMR123456 · 16/08/2016 16:03

Yellow I thought pineapples grew on trees too!!

LaContessaDiPlump · 16/08/2016 16:03

I didn't realise prunes were dried plums until a few years ago!!

Rifleponyandme · 16/08/2016 16:06

Always puzzled me why toasters have a setting that totally cremates the bread, why have that as a setting in the first place??

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 16/08/2016 16:07

Think I hadn't realised there was an absolute relationship though! I knew that '2' cooked for longer than '3’ on the toaster but didn't realise for how much longer.

'yellow' I did not know that!

I'm always amazed the number of people who still think TV licence vans are packed to the gills with cutting edge technologies rather than being decoys.

That in Doctor who K9 is because he's a dog and they are canine's BlushGrin.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2016 16:09

That's the potato waffle setting rifle, although you need two turns in the toaster for it to be properly cooked.

I don't think numbers are minutes, just an arbitary scale between slightly dry bread and cremated bread, although I need to go home and start timing now to be sure.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 16/08/2016 16:10

I have no idea who the east enders person is, but didn't realise Gary Oldman had gone out with Isabella Rossilini.

I remember when walkers changed the colours round (in about 1980) even though they insist they didn't.

FortVenturer · 16/08/2016 16:16

Such thought and planning went into creating Laila Morse, can't help but think Big Mo wasn't what they had in mind.

I'm another who thought the tunnel sat on the sea bed. How did they stop the water leaking down into the burrow they made for the tunnel? Can they build more tunnels under the sea bed of others seas?

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2016 16:16

If you search the internet for walkers change colour green, there are dozens of discussions involving people who believe that the colours were swapped, but Walkers say this never happened. Very strange.
