That having a bikini wax shouldn't be a necessary part of any job?

I've been watching the amazing gymnastics at the olympics and every time I can't help but wonder if they are all happy to have such revealing gym costumes. I would hate to have a camera doing a slow mo when I'm legs akimbo in the air wearing so little even if the camera angles seem to be discrete.

I have tried to look up if there is a rule about the cut and if they wanted could they wear little shorts but I can't find anything. I did read if they remove a wedgie they get marked down?!

AIBU to think that in this day and age it seems a bit odd that these elite athletes need to be so scantily clad and that they probably have more to worry about than waxing, ingrowing hairs and itchiness in the run up to the games?

However this thread is about female athletes wearing far more 'skimpier' outfits than male competitors. Can't you see that it's not necessary?

Men and women don't use the same apparatus or have the same required elements. Leotards often worn to maximise points in female required elements.

And it's not the rules and regulations, they allow the leggings, tights, shorts some would like, though form fitting is required for safety and ability to judge line etc (like ballet where you'll sent out of class, both men and women, for not wearing form fitting clothing).

One place (nothing to do with this thread really) where I would make change is to do away with the women's music for floor routine. It rarely bears any relation to the dance in any case.

JigglypuffsCaptor · 19/08/2016 13:52

itsmine so why don't you go running in a full length sleved ballgown? Maybe it's not practical, maybe it's your choice to run in shorts and a crop top? This is the argument with the leotard, it's functional for the sport and has been pointed out time after time regulation allows a skin coloured leggings to be worn.

Volleyball is different to gymnastics, there is no real need to see the legs for technical marks. So surely it must just boil down to team choice?

meck · 19/08/2016 13:57

Actually thinking about it I bet that's why men wear gym trousers. They kind of smooth out the line in the groin area without compressing iyswim. Its that clean line yoda was talking about.

I don't think those are form fitting enough to show clean lines to full effect, personally.

meck · 19/08/2016 14:06

routine* not dance!

VitreousEnamel · 19/08/2016 14:09

"Vitreous, the thread title is about bikini waxing".

So where does the bikini line stop and the leg begin. Some bikini lines go right down the thigh?

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 14:12

"'There is nothing intrinsically bad about wearing skimpy clothing or clothes covered in rhinestones, or in, shock horror, pink' grin"
No, and nobody has said there is.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 14:13

No adult woman could wear one of the leotards the gymnasts wear without either showing public hair or removing it.

JigglypuffsCaptor · 19/08/2016 14:27

meck I always thought there were points for "musical I interpretation" for the women? But I could be wrong haha Smile

Felascloak · 19/08/2016 14:33

No adult woman could run in gym shorts and a crop top without showing leg/armpit hair or removing it Bert. So exercising women only have the choice of hair removal, being hairy and facing censure, or wearing less comfortable clothing. Exactly the same situation as gymnasts and their pubes. Yet if I posted it as an AIBU I bet the conversational tone would be hugely different.

meck · 19/08/2016 14:35

I think you're right but it always sounds like background music to me! Rhythmic gymnast routines do better with music, but I'm not a big fan of rhythmic gym.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 14:37

Gym shorts cover more than leotards. And there is a significant variation in running shorts that does not exist in leotards. But hey ho. Move on. Nothing to see here.

Whatsshe0naboutnow · 19/08/2016 14:42

Haven't rtft so apologies if people have already made this point. The women gymnasts have probably been waxing their bikini lines (at least) for many years. It's one of those things that's a nightmare to begin with, but, if you keep it up over time, it's no big deal at all because the hair seems to grow finer and /or less regrowth (sorry if that's too much info). Many women who never wear leotards get waxed regularly anyway -it's not problematic once you get going with it and probably less hassle than shaving your face everyday! Considering the kind of training and diet regimes the female gymnasts will be used to, the waxing for their costumes is probably the least of their concerns!

Felascloak · 19/08/2016 14:53

So its about coverage not hair? Is that not a modesty question then?

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 14:54

Did you hear that whooshing noise? That was the point..........

JigglypuffsCaptor · 19/08/2016 14:56

There is no modesty question to answer.....THEY CAN WEAR FUCKING SKIN COLOURED LEGGINS FOR THE FORTYFUCKINGHUNDRETH TIME

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 14:56

No, it's not about modesty. It's about designing a kit that gives a woman no choice about whether she removes her pubic hair or not.

JigglypuffsCaptor · 19/08/2016 15:03

If you put leggings on nobody will see your bikini line, there is a choice. No need to 're-design a team kit others may be happy with if you can suppliment it with leggins for the athlete to be happy and covered.

Branleuse · 19/08/2016 15:07

female sports people have to be slim strong and without visible pubes growing out the sides of their leotards. Im sure having to shave before their competition is much less of a big deal than the years of hard physical preparation that they have to do.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 15:16

So why not just have leggings as part of the kit?

clicknclack · 19/08/2016 15:18

and many of them biologically probably aren't adult women anyway.

clicknclack · 19/08/2016 15:19

because like I said earlier, most of them probably have no desire to wear hot sweaty leggings.

JigglypuffsCaptor · 19/08/2016 15:21

Because not many gymnasts want to wear leggings, they are happy bare legged as they have been since the age of 4 and matured to women through their sporting career accepting it, but leggings are available and no loss of marks.

Those who want to wear leggings are a minority and its not cost effective to cater for it when their own leggings can be purchased and matched to their own skin tone.

You won't accept this though, because you refuse to believe the majority of gymnasts are happy in the oppressive male leotard Confused

Branleuse · 19/08/2016 15:30

Male swimmers have to wear tiny speedos too and they usually shave their body hair

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2016 15:37

Yep. Hot sweaty leggings. Or removing your pubic hair. Great choice, eh?

Or maybe a leotard cut so that hair removal is unnecessary?

Because- you know- we need to think about the messages we are sending girls about what makes their bodies acceptable. That it's fabulous to be strong and fit and
brave and skillful and to work hard to achieve your dreams. Not that it's fabulous to be those things so long as you conform to an idealised, hairless, painted view of femininity as well......
