That having a bikini wax shouldn't be a necessary part of any job?

I've been watching the amazing gymnastics at the olympics and every time I can't help but wonder if they are all happy to have such revealing gym costumes. I would hate to have a camera doing a slow mo when I'm legs akimbo in the air wearing so little even if the camera angles seem to be discrete.

I have tried to look up if there is a rule about the cut and if they wanted could they wear little shorts but I can't find anything. I did read if they remove a wedgie they get marked down?!

AIBU to think that in this day and age it seems a bit odd that these elite athletes need to be so scantily clad and that they probably have more to worry about than waxing, ingrowing hairs and itchiness in the run up to the games?

I saw at least one athlete on the beam competition with flesh toned footless tights on. Not sure why those would require a bikini wax.

cheval · 17/08/2016 18:54

On a similar hairy note, I noticed that the gymnast men are all completely hairless, legs arms, chest. Do they wax or shave?! Also the divers. Know swimmers take everything off for streamlining. Strange in the days of hipster beards that body hair is such a no-no, on men as well as women.

Pliudev · 17/08/2016 18:59

Not specifically about hairiness but wouldn't it be great to see a gymnast who looked her age (and not pre-pubescent) had short hair and a healthy complexion with no make up? I can't see why looking like a Barbie doll adds to gymnastic prowess. As for the pubes, surely some of these girls have had puberty postponed in some way? Some of them certainly don't look the age they claim to be.

OK. First time poster but been reading posts for a month now and wanted to throw this one out there:
I really, really hate the C word (c**t). No idea why. I work in the steel industry. I'm used to swearing. I swear constantly myself. It's just that word. I can't bring myself to say it and it winds me up to hear / read it.
AIBU? What do you all think?

I like the word cunt, but then, I like cunts.

Maybe you're a bit of a woman-hater? That could be why you don't like words for vaginas. Or starting new threads, as opposed to trolling old ones.

I don't think the cut of the leotard is terribly revealing they have a full seat to try to prevent wedgies, presumably. And I doubt it is a requirement anyway. They often wear flesh-coloured tights, and with those on and sleeves on their leotards they would not have to shave or wax anything. I think the men's shorts in their floor routines look a little goofy and the women wouldn't look as polished in them. The men would look better in those trousers they wear on the other apparati. Interestingly, a lot of the male gymnasts seem to be depilating their armpits now too.

I am sure that female runners have the option of wearing shorts when they run as themselves (rather than a national team) and I'm sure the cut of the team uniform reflects the norm in their world rather than dictating it. The ones I have raised an eyebrow at are the female divers, who are now wearing thong-type bikini bottoms that show a great deal of butt-cheek. That seems like it might make some of them uncomfortable, physically, mentally or both.

J0nah · 17/08/2016 19:36

Wow. OK, I've not got off to a good start
LRD: Not at all. This specific word just makes me cringe. Plus trolling?? I simply saw it mentioned on some general posts I read and thought I'd ask the question
VeryProud: Why is my query patronising? Curious to know. Isn't that the point of MN that I get a question and receive a considered response. Preferable to baseless insults surely?

SpeakNoWords · 17/08/2016 19:39

Start your own thread about it rather than jumping on an apparently random one, J0nah.

Yes, lots of them do, just like the women. Yes to the flesh-coloured footless tights too, not uncommon at all in competition.

elephantpig · 17/08/2016 19:51

I wonder if many of them don't have much pubic hair.
The physical stress of gymnastics on the body often prevents women from going through puberty 'completely' - they often don't have periods and are pretty flat chested.
Just a thought...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/08/2016 20:01

Really? The word for a normal piece of female anatomy 'just makes you cringe'?

Oh well, how sad for you. Now can we get back to the topic?

Felascloak · 17/08/2016 20:05

pliudev Google mai murakami and oksana chusovitina

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/08/2016 20:07

Plus, I wouldn't say Catalina Ponor looks pre-pubescent, at 28!

JacquettaWoodville · 17/08/2016 20:34

CBA to wander back through 15 pages but the word cunt, if used at all on this thread, certainly wasn't used much compared to some,

Try the sweary threads, mate. They'll blow your mind with a tiny

Eh? Distracting to whom?

I can see some support might be needed.

Papergirl1968 · 17/08/2016 20:39

I noticed a few leotards were very high cut eg Canadian Ellie Black's and Italian Carlotta Ferlito's. The Chinese, USA and GB ones were fine.
I did wonder though if elite gymnasts use fake tan. Their legs looked lightly tanned or at least not as glaringly white as mine would be!

GrumpyOldBag · 17/08/2016 20:42

I can't be reading all 15 pages.

However, my twopence worth is, it's all part of the overall presentation.

They wear lots of makeup, glitter in their hair, sparkly bits on their costumes. It's all a matter of aesthetics and I can't get stressed about it.

Like on Strictly - we don't expect the men and women to dress the same, that would spoil the fun.

PerspicaciaTick · 17/08/2016 20:42

As a direct result of this thread, I watched the Keirin between bouts of helpless laughter. Please understand that I was laughing at the cyclists' genitals, I was laughing at the people who thought it would be a good idea to circle them with a seam, so they appeared to be targetted...especially when the cyclists sit back, pelvis tilted forwarded as they wait on the starting line *and the camera repeatedly centres in on their groins leaving their faces disappearing out of view at the top of the screen.
Too much, too close...poor athletes.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 17/08/2016 20:43

Did someone mention volleyball again?
Oh lord no
