To think that this is not pronounced

Castor, as in the boy's name.

My friend thinks it's pronounced like CasTOR

I think it's pronounced like CastER and that Caster, castor and Kaster are homophones.

I'm happy to be told I'm wrong and am being unreasonable but it's boggling my brain.

I'm having a baby in a couple of days had girls names sorted because that's what I was expecting turns out its a boy and Castor is on a very small short list

Castor= caster to me

QuackDuckQuack · 14/08/2016 15:45

If it's going to bother you then pick a more mainstream name as your friend won't be the last to pronounce it differently.

springwaters · 14/08/2016 15:49

Would be castor to me.OR.

Risks being called caster oil as a nickname though. Or something stools/ diahorrea based.

springwaters · 14/08/2016 15:50

Castor oil.

omri · 14/08/2016 15:51

I'd pronounce like caster sugar

Missgraeme · 14/08/2016 15:52

Expect the Castor Troy gags.

We have a Cyrus and he gets Cyrus the Virus.
Live both names tho!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/08/2016 15:53

OR to me.

SilverDragonfly1 · 14/08/2016 15:53

CastER. Castor oil is CastOR though (depending on region!) so how it's pronounced generally might depend on where you live. However, Castor Troy in Face/Off is def CastER.

SilverDragonfly1 · 14/08/2016 15:54

Sorry, here Castor oil is CaRstor!

FrazzleRock · 14/08/2016 15:57

Its a NAME!?
Ok....

Then I'd probably automatically read it as CAS-ter to rhyme with CAS-per.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 15:57

I know 4 Castors who all pronounce it castER, who or what is Caster Troy?

OP posts:
YouTheCat · 14/08/2016 15:58

What other names are on your list?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 15:58

Yes frazzle it's a name www.mythencyclopedia.com/Ca-Cr/Castor-and-Pollux.html

OP, these threads are generally pointless as people are not very good at explaining in writing how they pronounce things.

Be prepared to be very confused. Grin

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 16:02

theCat

So far

Jasper
Castor
Fergus

I'm already confused, I found my socks in my handbag earlier!

Buzzardbird · 14/08/2016 16:05

I read it as Caster but now I look at it, I would pronounce it as Castor Oil. I have never heard of a human with this name before though.

KoalaDownUnder · 14/08/2016 16:06

I love Jasper.

Castor makes me picture a castor on the bottom of a wheely chair. Or caster sugar.

YouTheCat · 14/08/2016 16:07

I know a Jasper or two.

Fergus is nicer, I think. It depends on how it goes with surnames/middle names I suppose.

I don't know any Castors but I'd pronounce it with the 'or' rather than 'er'.

Think it's one of the names on orphan black (Netflix thing!) and it's pronounced cas-tor (ie not like the sugar..) on there!

KoalaDownUnder · 14/08/2016 16:13

Oh, so it's with a short 'a' sound then? As in 'cat'?

Honestly, I think you'll get constant mispronunciations, if that bothers you. 'Castor' looks like 'CAH-stuh' to me.

TeenAndTween · 14/08/2016 16:13

I would pronounce it like your friend.
I think your other two choices are better as only one way to say them.

NeedACleverNN · 14/08/2016 16:16

I prefer Jasper over Castor but it is your choice

TeenAndTween · 14/08/2016 16:17

Castor and Pollux are names from mythology/astronomy. I wouldn't use them. It is a bit like saying that Methuselah is a name. It is a name of course, but not one standardly used in Britain. (Waits to be contradicted by someone who knows 3 of them).
