To think that this is not pronounced

Castor, as in the boy's name.

My friend thinks it's pronounced like CasTOR

I think it's pronounced like CastER and that Caster, castor and Kaster are homophones.

I'm happy to be told I'm wrong and am being unreasonable but it's boggling my brain.

I'm having a baby in a couple of days had girls names sorted because that's what I was expecting turns out its a boy and Castor is on a very small short list

Mispronunciation does not really phase me what does is someone saying "I don't care how it's pronounced everybody is wrong (even tho as we can see a few people have different ways of saying it) when I say it I'm going to put very heavy emphasis on my own way"

It's hard to explain exactly what I mean but all the Castors I know it's quite a soft name no perticular emphasis put on any one letter I guess more like polter says it and very much like Casper just a T instead of a P.

It the perticular pronunciation that's bugging me the only way I can explain it by writing is this castOr actually said like that with the O loud and quite harsh

" I wouldn't use them."

Good thing no one is asking you to then!

I'd say it as Caster, Op.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 16:23

NN I really like Jasper but sadly the co decision maker having previously liked it now decides he dosnt because of a 71yo comedian who uses it as a stage name

Depends where you're from. Technically, Castor is pronounced CASS -Tor. It's derived from the Greek name.

In the US, however, it's usually pronounced CASS-Ter.

In both cases, emphasis is on the first syllable, not the second.

BastardGoDarkly · 14/08/2016 16:26

Oh, I love jasper! Was vetoed by DH Angry

BastardGoDarkly · 14/08/2016 16:28

I've got an Eloise, and the people that pronounce it EL-OU-ISE are many, I nearly ripped my hair out the first few weeks, not so much anymore, I never saw it coming though.

FayKorgasm · 14/08/2016 16:30

Accent plays a big part in some names. Will you be ok with having to spell and pronounce his name throughout your and his life to the way you say it?

TeenAndTween · 14/08/2016 16:30

The thing is, however much you stress how you want it to be pronounced, people will say it how they think, eg teachers, interviewers, work colleagues, receptionists etc. Telling them just once won't help as, if it is not how they would naturally say it, they won't remember.

If it is going to bug you how a name is said, you need to pick one with a single recognised pronunciation, which this thread has shown that Castor does not have.

Similarly, if it is going to bug you how a name is spelt, then you need to pick the most obvious common form of the spelling.

QueenJuggler · 14/08/2016 16:32

Bastard how is it pronounced if it's not El-lou-eese? I'm not sure I've ever heard it pronounced any other way.

80sMum · 14/08/2016 16:32

I would pronounce Castor as Kasstuh.

Wdigin2this · 14/08/2016 16:34

I've said this on other threads, but please don't give your child a very unusual/hard to pronounce name! I have an androgenous name which is extremely unusual in my area......and I hate it with a passion!!!! No, actually I hate it more than that!! Angry

QueenJuggler · 14/08/2016 16:34

Bastard, actually, having said the name about 10 times in a row, I've realised that of course I pronounce it "El-oh-eese", and probably always have done! Doh!

FayKorgasm · 14/08/2016 16:35

I would pronounce it Casstur.

BastardGoDarkly · 14/08/2016 16:35

Yes Queen that's it! :)

MotherFuckingChainsaw · 14/08/2016 16:36

Well, that's news to me.

His real name is Robert. What's so wrong with the act?

FayKorgasm · 14/08/2016 16:37

El-u-weeze?? Or have I said it wrongly all my life?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 16:39

The only thing about my accent that makes any location detectable is its England. I have one of those none accents.

It's an odd one because I would like to get it right I don't much care if anybody else does or not. I'm not one for having a name and insisting on pronouncing it incorrectly this one has just bugged me because so many people say it differently I wanted to know the correct way. And Im almost certain it's not with the O almost shouted

NeedACleverNN · 14/08/2016 16:41

Always said Eh-lou-ese

So like Louise with an E in front... How else is it supposed to sound?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 16:42

chainsaw I have no idea what's so wrong with it, it may not be the act at all but the carrot if that makes sense.

Co decision maker is leaning towards Fergus but chances are I'm going to get all cross about it all and move the goal posts to include the names of trains from Thomas and friends

OP posts:
DotForShort · 14/08/2016 16:44

I would pronounce it as Caster (emphasis on first syllable, vowels exactly the same as in Jasper).

I would imagine that you will get a variety of pronunciations for the name Castor from native speakers of English from different parts of the world.

Rubies12345 · 14/08/2016 16:46

I just looked it up:

Pronunciation: (KASS tor)

It's somewhere in between then

KoalaDownUnder · 14/08/2016 16:46

I can see how Eloise should be El-oh-eez but frankly, I find that v awkward to pronounce. (Without sounding like the Queen Grin)

It's much easier to move from the 'oh' to the 'ee' sound by 'bridging' it with a 'w'.

I work with an Eloise, and mostly everyone pronounces it that way.

SanityClause · 14/08/2016 16:47

Oh, I would pronounce it CAH-stuh, (with the first syllable to rhyme with non-rhotic "car") not to rhyme with Casper. When it rhymes with Casper, I prefer it a lot more.

I like Jasper more, though. And Fergus, actually.

KoalaDownUnder · 14/08/2016 16:47

(As in: Louise with an 'el' in front, I mean.).

YouTheCat · 14/08/2016 16:47

Fergus could be shortened to Gus. I love the name Gus. Grin
