To think that this is not pronounced

Castor, as in the boy's name.

My friend thinks it's pronounced like CasTOR

I think it's pronounced like CastER and that Caster, castor and Kaster are homophones.

I'm happy to be told I'm wrong and am being unreasonable but it's boggling my brain.

I'm having a baby in a couple of days had girls names sorted because that's what I was expecting turns out its a boy and Castor is on a very small short list

Castor isn't a human's name.

NeedACleverNN · 14/08/2016 16:51

So Louise with an El in front of it is the correct pronunciation for Elouise?

Sorry to hijack your thread OP

Bragadocia · 14/08/2016 16:54

To me, the 'castor' of castor oil, rhymes with 'car' (vroom vroom cars).

Castor, the name, is like 'KASS ter'. I have a Classics degree, and over the three years of university, this is the only way I have heard the name pronounced.

BastardGoDarkly · 14/08/2016 16:54

Eloise is French, so el-oh-eese. But think there's EL-OU-ISE too, and everyone seems to plump for that.

I'm almost over it now, but can honestly say I'd have chosen something else if I'd known how almost everyone would pronounce it.

AmysTiara · 14/08/2016 16:57

It's El oh eeze.

I would say Caster op

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 14/08/2016 16:57

Makes me think of a fine sugar or a revolting oil, depending on the spelling. Not a name I would choose.

BastardGoDarkly · 14/08/2016 17:00

If you can't have jasper op, I'd go for casper from your list, it's lovely 😊

JudyCoolibar · 14/08/2016 17:01

CahstOR

disappoint15 · 14/08/2016 17:01

I would pronounce Castor the name CASS-tuh. I don't have a rhotic accent so wouldn't pronounce the 'r' at the end. It's difficult to say either CASS-TER or CASS-TOR without stressing the second syllable - an unstressed final syllable is usually a schwa (ie the indeterminate 'uh' sound in words like 'final').

Unfortunately as castor oil I'd pronounce it CAHS-tuh (like my non-rhotic 'car'). And I'd pronounce caster as in rolly thing under sofa CAHS-tuh too.

I think Eloise is tricky because the elision between the o and the i make El-o-eez and El-oo-eez very, very similar.

Arborea · 14/08/2016 17:02

How about something else, similar to Castor but easier to pronounce eg Karsten? I am a bit of a fan of Scandi sounding names though!

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 14/08/2016 17:09

Well, it's the first time I've ever seen it as a name so I guess I'd be with the 'carster' variation, the same way as I'd say the sugar & the oil. Down to accent not 'correctness'.

Have you considered Fred? 😬

BlossomHillOne · 14/08/2016 17:15

Does little Castor have a sibling called Senna?

NotYoda · 14/08/2016 17:15

What about Kester?

NeedACleverNN · 14/08/2016 17:17

Fred is perfect Grin

Needs a revival really. It's old and easy. Like Bob

NotYoda · 14/08/2016 17:18

(Kester is a variant of Christopher, BTW)

NeedACleverNN · 14/08/2016 17:19

When I first saw Kester I thought it said keester... I thought you can't call your baby bum!!! Blush

NotYoda · 14/08/2016 17:23

NeedGrin

I know of a baby Harris - I always think "arse" when I hear the name.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 17:34

I quite like Fred but is there a train called Fred in Thomas and friends

OP posts:
NeedACleverNN · 14/08/2016 17:36

So no names from Thomas?

I always said I was to have another boy, I would have named him Eric

GreatFuckability · 14/08/2016 17:37

Caster. And I would pronounce the oil the same way.

As a linguistics/phonology student, I must take issue with 'non-accent' however. No such thing as a non-accent.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 19:02

Ok great what I meant was you cannot detect where in the UK I come from by my accent,

I'm glad you have commented does this mean I can consider you to be a sort of expert in this field?

OP posts:
Batteriesallgone · 14/08/2016 21:08

I'd pronounce it Kass-ter I think.

Never heard the Cars-tor way.

I'm no linguist though!

LoucheLady · 14/08/2016 21:18

Castor is French for beaver. I'd avoid it for that reason alone.

YouTheCat · 14/08/2016 21:44

Great, are you like Henry Higgins from My Fair Lady? Grin

NeedsAsockamnesty · 14/08/2016 23:38

Castor isn't a human's name

Castor was the mortal brother, so human
