AIBU about this tomato

I bought a packet of 6 on the vine tomatoes from tesco this afternoon. Opened when I got home and one is manky - split on two sides and leaky. AIBU to return to the shop?

And yes, I know I could buy from a market where I could check tomatoes before buying (I couldn't see this through the packaging) but Tesco is convenient. And I know

I could chop and cook but wasn't planning on that for dinner tonight.

It was only a pound a pack but that's a lot for me at the moment.

Okay is obviously on a budget and can walk to the shop. One manky tomato, pepper, peach etc in a bag will spread its spores over the other fruit or veg in the bag. OP isn't suggesting making a fuss just returning mouldy squashed food.

This is often the case. As others have said, it really isn't worth the trouble or the angst.

I had one last week. I tutted but I was too lazy to go back so I just threw it in the bin. Don't blame you on principle though.

BaronessBomburst · 14/08/2016 17:05

I'd return it. I'm fed up of sub-standard produce and return everything now. I shudder to think how much money supermarkets have had off me over the years, what with incorrect billing (mainly forgetting to ring up discounts and special offers), and food that I had to throw out. Now I check everything, ask for and check the receipt, and anything that fails to make it's sell-by date goes back.
Couldn't care less what the staff think. I'm always polite. Grin

Return it op. Honestly the staff won't think anything of you, they will have had people with really daft complaints before now. They won't bat an eyelid. (Worked in retail for 17 painful years)

KWB1 · 14/08/2016 17:13

Don't worry what they'll think of you, they won't think anything of it at all.
IME complaining with the hope of a generous money off voucher is fruitless (no pun intended Grin) - I did that recently when my Tescos Hawaiian pizza had 6 pieces of pineapple on it (liking my Hawaiian I felt a bit cheated)..... I put a tongue in cheek post on Tesco's fb page, and they wanted photos of the bar code, supplier id and other stuff (I had visions of some CEO being hauled over the coals for his appalling pineapple application skills) - and sent me compensation in the form of a £3 voucher. Now I'm not sniffing at £3 but I'm not sure it was worth all the hassle fishing the packaging out the bin, photographing all the bits they wanted to see etc.

Complaint via Twitter with pictures. Saves you going back and they'll probably send you a £5 gift card

Debinaround · 14/08/2016 17:22

Years ago I worked in a pub and had a guy trying to return his pint of lager because there was a fly in it. Fair enough you might think but he had been sat outside in the beer garden and had drunk all but an inch of the pint. Confused He wanted his money back Grin

When the general public try shit like that the staff will really think nothing of you returning your mouldy tomatoes and will probably apologise for the inconvenience. Smile

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 14/08/2016 17:24

Take them back but not sure you'd get anything more than another pack, I bought something two weeks ago that was actually out of date (meat...use by, not best before) and traipsed back to return it and she just took it off me and refunded my money, no apology for selling me meat past its best or for the trouble of having to return it or anything Hmm

suchafuss · 14/08/2016 17:27

I used to not bother taking things back. However a period where every pack of fruit i bought from Sainsburys having at least one spoiled made me reconsider. Take it back.
