Sling meets?!

UmbongoUnchained · 14/08/2016 15:15

A group popped up on fb to invite me to a local sling meet for "established baby wearers to gather and discuss baby wearing."

Do they literally just stand there with baby in sling and talk about their baby in the sling?
Am I the only one who finds that hilarious?
Anyone been to one of these?!

Ummm AIBU to think this is just mad?

I think you're being really really really unreasonable...

If you don't A. Give a blow by blow report back to us and B. Tell us the name of this group so we can snoop!

NaturalRBF · 14/08/2016 20:16

Also we have a mobi and we love it.

witsender · 14/08/2016 20:26

They are machine washable on the whole Tappity, just treat wool or silk blends more carefully.

tappitytaptap · 14/08/2016 22:07

Good job really witsender. If its not puke DS loves a good chew and dribble!

witsender · 14/08/2016 22:12

Haha! Mine were never pukers per se, but boy could they dribble!

dylsmimi · 14/08/2016 22:24

tappityyou can get chew / dribble pads for the straps of a connector etc - it wouldn't work for a woven wrap as they do up round the actual straps if that makes sense. Ds was a chewer and dribbler but I never got any and used to end up with soggy straps - yuk!!
I don't have a connector but an ABC (action baby carrier) which has a more padded waist which I found more comfy. My friend tried it and said it was easier for back carrys too.

minifingerz · 14/08/2016 22:47

"They're not "Bad" for baby's hips, they're just not ideal, but neither are car seats etc

They're fine, unless you never ever take a baby out of it it'll do their hips no harm, "

How do you know? Hmm

SerenDippitee · 14/08/2016 22:56

There's no credible research to confirm the assertion that narrow-based carriers damage the hips in babies with no other hip or joint problems. There's anecdotal evidence that they can exacerbate problems in babies with existing hip dysplasia.

The main problem with Björns, which is well documented, is how uncomfortable they are for the carrier once the baby gets to 20lb (or sooner). I would always dissuade a parent from buying a Björn because they're poor value for money. They're £45+ for something that most people can't use past 6months. For an extra £20 or so you can have a connecta, which will last most children until 18 months or so.

Felascloak · 14/08/2016 22:57

I would've gone to an established babywearers groups. Woven wraps are totally addictive, loads of different lengths, brands, blends etc. You can talk about it for hours! Might sound odd but its just hobby geekery like any other hobby. umbongo You can go but you might be Hmm. Unless your woven is an artipoppe!!

JasperDamerel · 14/08/2016 22:59

The women I know who breastfed toddlers include accountants, a graphic designer, several journalists, teachers, software developers, scientists, academics, a couple of solicitors, midwives, nurses, various other health professionals, and plenty of people in various other jobs.

Breadwidow · 15/08/2016 05:18

Hobby geekery, great way of describing it! I've never managed a decent back carry in a woven and only used one for a short time for front carries (after which I switched back to trusted connecta) but I still got pretty obsessed with them for a while!

UmbongoUnchained · 15/08/2016 08:17

Artipoppe?

OP posts:
Felascloak · 15/08/2016 08:32

It's a very upmarket woven wrap brand costing several hundred pounds per sling Shock

Togaparties · 15/08/2016 08:48

Sounds great, if you're some kind of namby pamby hippy fuckwit.

Catsick36 · 15/08/2016 08:56

Sounds like yr up for starting a sling bashing thread to me.

NickyEds · 15/08/2016 09:00

Whenever I hear the term "baby wearing" I imagine people with babies on their heads, wearing them like a hat.

Each to their own but I can't get too excited about going to a meeting just about slings, and I liked my Caboo and Connecta. My friend uses cloth nappies and was invited to join a support group for re usable users. I'm Hmm about needing an actual support group based on the thing you use to catch crap in.

CurlyMoo · 15/08/2016 09:11

I had a friend who was really into babywearing and she did the training in Germany to become a teacher of slings?! It was some sort of qualification to demonstrate how to baby/toddler wear correctly/safely and she was absolutely obsessed with it. She did semi convert me to wraps, although I only used them at home, I felt they were too much of a faff outside.

The "established" bit makes me think that they want a group where like minded people can gather and chill out without newbies/curious people coming and needing questions answered/demonstrations etc. I used to attend a home ed group where a rule of "school aged children only" was enforced as loads of people with small babies who were home educating apparently Hmm turned up and it did change the dynamic quite a bit.

witsender · 15/08/2016 09:41

I was well into my Slings when the kids were smaller...love a bit of geekery. But I am happily a namby Pamby hippy fuckwit. Grin

UmbongoUnchained · 15/08/2016 09:42

catsick even though I've mentioned several times I own a couple of slings and an actually going to go the group? Get over yourself

OP posts:
witsender · 15/08/2016 11:05

Well, what's the thread all about then?!

UmbongoUnchained · 15/08/2016 11:18

Was wondering about what actually happens at a sling meet for established baby wearers. As its says in the OP.

OP posts:
UmbongoUnchained · 15/08/2016 18:23

For anyone who's still interested, it was a total waste of my time. Let's just say I was not part of their demographic!

OP posts:
Felascloak · 15/08/2016 18:30

Hahaha! Too much sling geeky or too much attachment parenting/antivax stuff?

UmbongoUnchained · 15/08/2016 18:32

I always thought I was quite hippy dippy but this was just wow. Not for me, won't be going again.

Ok I confess I'm a lot bit obsessed with babywearing. I love natibaby for those who know what I'm talking about. I'm also about to obtain my first Girasol. Yet to try artipoppe or woven wings due to cost and crap luck on dips! I go to sling library/social and love it.
