To not like pictures of the owners in a self catering cottage?

We are in a lovely self catering cottage at the moment, and there are a couple of photos of the owners up. I think this is fine, but I'm not massively keen on it.

It reminds me of a place we went a few years ago where you could not move for pictures of the owners' family. It was a bit of a posh rental in Cornwall, and you couldn't move for pictures of their three blonde beautiful children messing about in boats, looking like something straight out of the Boden catalogue, or the family having cocktails on a tropical beach.

Am I being a grinch? When I go on holiday, I hate having the feeling that we are trespassing in someone else's home.

I agree with you but i get that when they come to use the house it makes it for homely for them.

Bit odd and we avoid this with our holiday let (which we do use ourselves, albeit not that often). I have a lock box in the garage for "our" stuff and this includes anything identifying. I'm not sure quite what I'm envisaging happening but I prefer guests to know as little about me as possible.

We own a holiday let and there are no personal items on view.
I have been to some that do though, there's one that has a whole " wall" of photos with wedding shots etc - I don't really like it but it doesn't really affect my holiday

I stayed in one where the owner had left her PhD thesis on the bookshelf.

But yes - photos would be a bit weird.

Only a couple? Meh, wouldn't bother me. We stayed in an appartment in Menorca one summer, all of them in the complex were privately owned. There was a notice board in the kitchen with photos of the family on it. It was a lovely, well-equipped appartment, and as I said I never gave a second thought to the pictures.

One of our local pubs has wedding pictures of the owner/landlord and his wife on the lounge walls. It's like having a drink in their livingroom.

we've also been in one with loads of nifty gifty rubbish. You couldn't move for bumping into bits of wood with "love' on them or pebbles.

I like clear surfaces!

And I have turned the photos to the wall!

We own a villa in Florida which we rent out for most of the year. We have a small framed photo of the four of us at Disney which we hope reminds guests that it's a treasured home which they will hopefully look after during their stay. I certainly wouldn't bombard them with photos everywhere.

Maybe the owners of the place with the pebbles got given loads of that stuff as wedding presents and offloaded it to their holiday let so they didn't have to have it up at home?

When I hire a holiday home I do not want to think of it as a much treasured family home. I am usually paying a lot and for the time I am there it is my holiday home.

Yanbu. They must be letting themselves as any agency worth its salt would tell them to get rid. Our holiday home is deliberately devoid of personal photos, and definitely no nifty gifties < shudder >.

In fact, I was a bit pissed off last time we were there as people had 'helpfully' left bottles olive oil, onions, opened packets of pasta, instant coffee, and the cleaner hadn't disposed of them.
If you're paying £££ for a holiday home, you don't want to arrive and be faced with the stuff the previous occupants cba to throw away.

My cleaner says she could start wholesaling ketchup and tea bags from the amounts left every week- one week someone left a hundred quids worth of BBQ stuff- I can only assume they intended to BBQ and then got drunk and CBA or something.

I agree with practy. Whilst I like to provide toys/ books/ DVDs etc and the guests have commented that it's nice we do that, I want them to think of it as their home for the week, not mine that I've been so gracious as to bestow on them. They've paid. It's theirs.

I love it when people leave dried foods like pasta, or oil and vinegar, herbs, flour and other things. Seems silly for everyone to buy their own. Family photos or portraits wouldn't bother me either unless they were in the bedroom staring at us.

Agree, not massively keen on the 'personal touch' - stayed in a caravan (booked through large chain) which was very much an owners caravan, there was an instruction booklet written 'by their dog' - with pictures - 'hi i'm Rosie the dog, instructions for the boiler can be found blah blah blah', loads of books and a commode in the wardrobe!! Just felt like trespassing on someone's home and they could be back any minute!

I'm afraid it does really annoy me. And I don't need to be reminded that it's someone's home. I think even the one Disney picture would be turned to the wall

Why would you throw away perfectly good teabags and olive oil? What a horrible waste. I wouldn't be happy to have perishables left, but I have no problem with teabags, olive oil, salt & pepper etc., in fact I love it if I find those things in a holiday house.

Would make me feel uncomfortable and affect my holiday. I would hope the owners would keep their pictures locked somewhere and bring them out for when they stay. I wouldn't want that at all in a holiday rental.

And I know how to look after a house without being reminded by photos that someone else owns it.
