To think Rio has been shocking

There is hardly any one in the seats even the foot ball and brizallians love foot ball

The pools are green no one can say why I hear a rugby athlete got injured they got lost on route to the hospital in abulance 😳

There are issues with transport

The ioc have said this has been one of the most diffcult games in a long time

Even the opening was very poor I no they didn't have much money so why not just do a carnival instead they tried to copy ours though the ages sort of thing but not very well play to your strengths I think some samba and carival theam would have been awesome.

Also some govermnet staff have not been paid I fear that it's unlikely the para games will be much better
Contrast to London were there wasn't a ticket going begging even for the para games

I think it's all well and good allowing emerging countries to have this but they must be able to afford it and also show that the tickets will be pitched at a price of the avarge wage

amd also that the cost of the games is not at the expense of paying your govermnet staff there will be no legacy at least we have had the good sense to sell some of our ventunes I don't think there is any vunue sitting empty

Thanks, Lweji Those are the photos which are on google but I do agree that the descriptions sound bad. Not unusual, I don't think, but in need of fixing.

Also agree that it isn't always easy to work with Brazilians, culturally. Time pressure etc don't seem to mean much to them. It's nice in some ways but agree it can be very frustrating - my funniest experience was wasting a whole morning talking about the fact we'd run out of paint, eventually being taken to get some mid afternoon for them to tell us in the empty shelved shop that they would begin to mix and prepare the paint for us while we sat in the middle of the shop floor and had coffee and cake with them!

lljkk · 14/08/2016 18:14

In age of T'internet we don't need to rely on BBC broadcasts Confused. Just go online to find the live commentary for each sport you like & ignore the rest.

Just found some good news regarding Australia and the Olympic Village.

africa.tvcnews.tv/2016/07/26/australia-hails-quick-fix-problems-athletes-village/#.V7CnJ5grLIU

It recognises that other countries had problems and deployed their own people to fix problems at their own cost, but Brazil did come through for Australia.

"the head of the Australian Olympic team, Kitty Chiller, thanked organizers on Monday for responding promptly to her concerns by deploying hundreds of maintenance people and cleaners. (...) Chiller said. “I still say that it will be the best village that I have ever been in once these issues are complete.”"

I suppose these don't make it to the Mail/Sun/Mirror.

Sarahandco · 14/08/2016 18:29

Full stops? That was generous !

cushion53 · 14/08/2016 18:37

I've heard they are bussing homeless people in from the favelas to spectate, getting bums on seats.

augustusdecimus · 14/08/2016 18:37

Brazil is in the midst of a deep recession and a political crisis. The public have neither the money or the interest right now. It's as simple as that.

manicinsomniac · 14/08/2016 18:48

Tell that to the gymnastics crowd right now! Grin

So delighted for them (and us!)

I hope they have bussed people in from the favelas. Gymnastics is just the right sport to inspire children who don't have a lot - all kids can flip around in the streets and have fun.

I did feel a tad sorry for the American who had to cope with the deafening cheers every time he did something less than perfectly though - ouch!

hollieberrie · 14/08/2016 18:57

Your posts really smack of first world arrogance OP. I lived and worked in Brazil for 3 years. Its an amazing country, wonderful people, but a fuck load of problems to deal with. Cut them some slack, they are a huge developing nation. You cant compare to London, we are so much wealthier than them with much better infrastructure and investment. I think they are doing admirably in the circumstances. I am enjoying watching very much.

PacificDogwod · 14/08/2016 19:15

Why is this so important to you, pleasemothermay1? Confused

I have very conflicted opinions about the Olympics as an 'institution', and am more than prepared to discuss corruption/the politics of the Games/the cost/Zika etc etc, but I am in no doubt about how important the Olympics are to the athletes competing and how much fun and excitement I am getting out of watching disciplines I don't normally have any interest for whatsoever.
Cycling, anyone?? That mad Kirein (?sp)?! OMG Grin

Statelychangers · 14/08/2016 19:26

OP -The olympics are supposed to promote sportsmanship - your post is all about oneupmanship, it does not embody the spirit of the olympics! All this "best Olympics ever" shit - I was so sick of it in Sydney, London more of the same, ffs enjoy it for what it is or turn the to off!

SheHasAWildHeart · 14/08/2016 19:30

What hollieberrie said a thousand times yes!

Inkanta · 14/08/2016 19:52

Yeah it is a shame about the empty seats.

Still enjoying it though - Great Britain have a fabulous team doing very well. Think we could be 2nd on the medal table by the end of the night.

dizzyfeck · 14/08/2016 20:11

Most of the people being boo-d had slagged off Brazil on Twitter. One thing Brazilians are is vocal and passionate.

Brazil is not poor, nor is it third world. Although the terms third world and first world are outdated and derogatory, they shouldn't be used for any country.

Brazil is large and rich, given that, it shouldn't have the problems it does. The money should go into health, education, welfare and infastructure. But too many decades of fat cat corrupt politicians have been pocketing Brazil's wealth. They are all bad apples and have left Brazil in this mess, the mentality that what belongs to the state belongs to no-one is Brazil's downfall.

If eating crisps and watching TV is "western" then Brazil is very western. The word slums conjours up images of cardboard/corregated shacks and raw sewage. That image is 30 years out of date. The houses might be ugly and haphazard but they are brick, plumbed into mains water and have electricity (even if it fizzes). People are poor but they're not starving, nor are the people in the favelas homeless.

The money should all be going into Brazil's social structure and this is massive problem. Where I live it's rural so the schools are good with no problems and the SUS (Brazil's NHS) hospitals and clinics are a very high standard. But that's because the population is small, in big cities they don't have the resources to cope with the populations and I can see why people are angry at the Olympic spending. The infastructure is where we suffer, years of promises to improve the roads and then they re-surface the road. Provide 5 million, some corrupt arsehole pockets 3, reduces the thickness of the tarmac and one year later the road is shit again. This is what angers Brazilians, they want the country fixed before it opens up for things like the World Cup and The Olympics. It's not that the Olympics is happening while children are dying of starvation. It's messed up but it's not that level of messed up.

Brazilian time keeping is a separate issue my Brazilian DH hates it, a lot my friends are punctual as well and find the Brazilian time keeping infuriating.

Having said that six months ago people were saying London should step in to help as Brazil were not going to pull it off. Now they have, they are still being criticised. I feel I need to stick up for Brazil, I love this country, it's my home and I wouldn't leave if you paid me. For all its problems it's still a fantastic place and I wish people could just enjoy themselves. Although I've noticed the criticisms mostly come from people who haven't been or have years ago. Which about sums up why there's so much bullshit coating the truth, because people are running their mouths off with no knowledge to back it up.

I think most people do appreciate that and are enjoying it to be fair. There's only a few naysayers. I'd move to Brazil in a heartbeat if I could, it feels like so much more of a home and a place to belong than the UK, imo; everyone is so friendly and genuine. except for my kids' dad who is vile Grin

Rainbow · 14/08/2016 20:38

I'm enjoying watching the events but I'm not watching the interviews. A lot of the athletes are very mean spirited. Especially the Americans, and everyone against the Russians. I know a few have tarnished the Russian reputation but come on guys, the ones there are them.

Cubtrouble · 14/08/2016 20:47

I think the Olympics have been fantastic- world class sports men and women doing the sports they love.

What I find absolutely staggering that for a 1st world Country such as England with a world class education system we still produce people who can't spell basically anything, even in the opening post, who have no clue whatsoever about punctuation and who think "there" is the correct one to choose.

My sides are splitting. Seriously, the Olympics are NOT what you should be focusing your time on.

dizzyfeck · 14/08/2016 20:48

manicinsomniac Brazil has its fair share of twats. I have a few colleagues and family members that I'd happily banish to room 101, that's for sure Grin

ScouseAT · 14/08/2016 20:52

Agree, this post is mean spirited. Why not focus on the fabulous display GB have put on. Forget the negativity, do think London should host it every time???! Let's get behind our althletes and enjoy what's left.

bojorojo · 14/08/2016 21:01

There were virtually no empty seats on London for the athletics! I went to loads of events because tickets came back into the market. If anyone says there were banks and banks of empty seats in London, as in Rio, let's see the pictures!

Most people feel the Olympics is a bigger event than the World Cup. It takes significantly more money and organisation. If people cannot afford it or are not interested, the idea of enthusing people to participate in sport just will not happen. It also bankrupts financially weak countries like Greece so finance must be taken into consideration.

I truly love the Olympics and have fond memories of iconic performances. There will be plenty in Rio but it is very disappointing to see stadiums that are more than half empty. No doubt Usain Bolt will help tonight.

Favelas are areas of poor housing but are not necessarily full of the homeless. People who live in these areas do have more pressing needs than the games so would never have attended anyway. Rio does have plenty of rich and middle class people but they do not seem to be attending in great numbers. The Brits went mad over getting tickets. They were like gold dust. When we visited Brasil no-one was talking about it. There was no excitement. This is reserved for football. I would like to see it held in countries where the population appreciates more sports. Heaven help the Paralympics . I cannot see the Brasilians being remotely interested.

pleasemothermay1 · 14/08/2016 21:03

Only 3% of tickets were sold for the mixed doubles final

Poor show

PacificDogwod · 14/08/2016 21:11

Yeah, but so what?!

Their loss - I don't see why you must be so mean and smug about it?

Watching the cycling again just now - great stuff! Grin

manicinsomniac · 14/08/2016 21:12

Tennis court is 75% full now though. Though the internet live stream did just say 'I think an awful lot of people have come here to watch Del Potro lose - no matter who to!'
Hope they get their wish!

dizzyfeck · 14/08/2016 21:26

More pressing issues, no one cared including me, the impeachment and the humilating loss in the world cup put a damper on everyone, but things started to pick up around July and people are enjoying it now. Brazilians love sport, they are in my experience a lot more active and into sports than the UK. The weather helps I think. If the economy was good it would be very different.

If you Google London 2012 empty seats on images, you get loads and lots of newspaper reports from the time. Some are quite shocking.

Ghanagirl · 14/08/2016 21:36

Wow OP!
You are obviously really racist, and also although you seem really up yourself for being English your spelling is atrocious!
Get over yourself and learn to spell and to speak English...
