... to think HMRC will be waiting a long time for repayment on this tax demand

Telegraph link

HMRC have sent a man in Bristol a tax demand for £14,301,369,864,489.03. This is double the size of the UK economy. He thinks it would take him 369 million years to pay off the bill using his salary.

An HMRC employee has conceded that it looks as if somebody fell asleep on the keyboard when they were getting his new tax coding notice ready.

The thing I like best about this story is the .03 at the end of the £14 trillion sum. Nothing like absolute accuracy!

It always seems more believable when there are cents on the end [grin

Well it will solve the budget deficit, I suppose.

If he sets up a GoFundMe he should have the money in no time.

Is his name Starbucks?

You would have thought there would be a line or two of code which sanity checked these things ?

My retort to stuff like this is what else has the system got wrong ?

FoxesOnSocks · 12/08/2016 23:05

Does he have interest on the repayments?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/08/2016 23:10

Oops. Theyve got 2 chances of getting that money. One's called fat. They other being No.Grin.
What about that person that fell asleep on his desk at work and ended up transferring about 4 million pound into another company. I'm not sure what happened, mind.

He thinks it would take him 369 million years to pay off the bill using his salary.

He hasn't taken into account the interest they'll charge on late payments.

One year I had the tax man demand several hundred thousand pounds from me. Turns out he'd added 2 zeros to the end of my salary. Not uncommon for them to do this apparently...
