First of all I'm quite a calm person, it's takes a lot to rattle me

so I was driving today, not much traffic on the roads, a nice smooth ride until I was stopped at traffic lights, indicating my intention to turn left, I went forward, then this fucker cyclist decides to try and play chicken just as I was taking the turn, I stupidly of course had to stop, I then beeped at the cunt cyclist to show I have saved his lifeHmmwho then gave me the finger!!!Angry

So my AIBU is can I run the fucker cyclist over next time, as I think it will serve a lesson to all who think it's my fucking job to look out for idiots who take risks like that??

Something to remember is that most serious cyclists ride with clipped in pedals - sort of like ski bindings - so it's hard to come to a sudden stop because if you slam on the brakes you'll fall over (always a treat!).

Well, that is remarkably stupid of them. They are on public roads not a velodrome. Thy should be prepared to make emergency stops at all times so as not to endanger others.

"I agree many cyclists don't follow the rules of the road... Traffic jam? No problem overtake on the on the inside."

catnip2, can you explain what you mean by this? What do you think cyclists should do in traffic jams? Sit inbetween the cars, taking up the width of the entire lane, not moving forward?

Needabiscuit · 11/08/2016 07:49

Carol you clearly are in favour of the cyclist being in the right, yes I have the bigger vehicle, but in this isolated incident do you not think he should be aware of three cars ahead of him, who all had their indicators on, if he didn't see that, then he shouldn't be in the roads

And as for I wasn't paying no attention piss off, if he was beside I would of noticed, I don't have a SUV that's 10 feet off from the road, I would be aware there's someone by the window, and if he was waiting behind, that's in the wrong spot to wait, he should of gone up to the front and made his presence known, and as three cars were turning left he would of had plenty of his space to go straight ahead without us up his arse.........as we were all turning, as he should of been aware of if he was on the roads safely, and clearly I was the better of the two because I saw him cut me up and had to stop to let him pass otherwise I would of hit him

I haven't bashed every cyclist in the land, but some are clutching at straws trying to defend HIS riding ability

I think much like with cars, people notice and focus much more on the idiot who pulled out in front of you, than the previous dozen who were using the road correctly...

This. I drove about 70 miles on a motorway yesterday, so was amongst potentially thousands of cars. Yet I only remember the two dickheads who tried to drive their vehicles right through mine.

Exactly the same with cyclists. I may have been riding my bike on the roads with any one of you, but you probably don't remember me because I am not a dickhead. You only remember the dickheads - whatever piece of machinery they are in or on.

And note how I haven't claimed that because of my experience yesterday, ALL DRIVERS ARE DICKHEADS. Because blaming an entire set of road users for the actions of a minority is ridiculous. Except when you refer to cyclists apparently Hmm

SpringerS · 11/08/2016 08:38

Were you turning off a road that he was cycling straight on? If so you were 100% in the wrong and he had the right of way. In that case you broke the law and endangered life. So get off your high horse.

Lulooo · 11/08/2016 08:45

With an attitude like that, you're clearly a danger on the road, yourself. Threatening to run someone over, even in jest or in anger is highly inappropriate. Calm yourself down. Biscuit

NoobThebrave · 11/08/2016 09:03

I had to do a defensive driving course for work and the Instructor stated that everyone should have to experience all types of road usage to make everyone more considerate and less entitled. I have been a pedestrian, horse rider, cyclist, car driver, van driver and passenger on motor bike and in a HGV; it shows you the limitations of each and (I hope) makes you a better driver but also teaches you entitlement is the biggest issue; I used to get cross with 'bolshie' lorries until I realised quite how many gears they have to work through to stop and get going again.

Our roads are so full in many areas......If everyone's attitude was more considerate and people were all more aware of others then the roads would be a nicer place. His other big tip was always factor in time or you are never so late it is worth risking your (or others) lives for.

But wtf does no one indicate anymore!! 😡

Paintedhandprints · 11/08/2016 09:10

Well done for noticing and stopping. Cyclist was clearly in the wrong. I think you both had a fright and I guess this is the best place to vent your shock.
However, please don't actually run over a cyclist, or anyone. It's the wrong thing to do.

fascicle · 11/08/2016 10:19

It's difficult to judge, OP. Why would a cyclist deliberately endanger himself by doing what you have described? How did you become aware of the cyclist - mirror, window, sound? It's not clear from your posts when you checked your mirrors, whether you checked your blind spot etc. Maybe one of you was at fault, maybe both - hard to tell.

People talk on the thread as though drivers and cyclists are distinct categories - all the cyclists I know are also drivers.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/08/2016 16:50

I don't want to start a new cyclist thread so wanted to moan here that a cyclist very nearly took me out this morning!

Crossing the road, green man was on (regardless the road is closed to traffic because of road works) he came bombing around the corner and started shouting at me for being in the way! Luckily I'd seen him just in my peripheral vision but I felt like sticking my umbrella in his spokes!

Whereisthesnow · 12/08/2016 21:32

As it happened this evening I had to drive along the route I generally cycle along. It was really quite enlightening in the car! Lots of cyclists out enjoying the evening sun. I agree with others above who say it's useful for all road users to experience the road from other perspectives.
