First of all I'm quite a calm person, it's takes a lot to rattle me

so I was driving today, not much traffic on the roads, a nice smooth ride until I was stopped at traffic lights, indicating my intention to turn left, I went forward, then this fucker cyclist decides to try and play chicken just as I was taking the turn, I stupidly of course had to stop, I then beeped at the cunt cyclist to show I have saved his lifeHmmwho then gave me the finger!!!Angry

So my AIBU is can I run the fucker cyclist over next time, as I think it will serve a lesson to all who think it's my fucking job to look out for idiots who take risks like that??

Most drivers appear to have no regard for the rules of the road or other road users looking at the speeding, red light jumping, parking on zigzag line road hogs who live in my town.

I'm probably biased. I don't cycle any more after we were out for a family Sunday bike ride and a drunk driver smashed into my DH and DD after missing his turn, leaving the road and crashing over the paved barrier into the cycle lane.

DH's knee was smashed do badly he'll never walk without crutches. Luckily DD only had a brief concussion. It could have been much worse. Of course cyclists aren't really people. Not like drivers in a hurry...

RiverTam · 10/08/2016 17:51

Sigh. There's no such thing as road tax. Again.

snowgirl1 · 10/08/2016 17:54

Until cyclists pay road tax and insurance I feel we are entitled to shout and swear when they cycle like twats. Just my opinion. ...

Car drivers don't pay "road" tax - they pay Vehicle Excise Duty which is based on C02 emissions. Bicycles don't emit C02 so they don't pay 'Vehicle Excise Duty'.

Some cyclists do 3rd party liability insurance.

2kids2dogsnosense · 10/08/2016 17:58

Whatever you do, don't run him over - getting chunks of cycling helmet out of your tire treads is a nightmare . . . er, allegedly. Grin

However, you aren't being unreasonable to want to . . . Wink

WeAllHaveWings · 10/08/2016 18:10

Where did he come from?
Was he undertaking you and going straight ahead?
Or did he come from your right while his lights were at red?
Or did he cross the road (as a pedestrian would, but on his bike?)
Or somewhere else?

InsufficientlyCaffeinated · 10/08/2016 18:11

No surer way to identify bandwagon jumping ignorant idiots than the mention of road tax.

  1. it doesn't exist
  2. cars cost society far more than drivers put back so those who don't drive pay more than those who do

I find people who spring up to say that it doesn't exist is a sure fire way to spot them too.

P1nkP0ppy · 10/08/2016 18:28

I bet you indicated AFTER he pulled alongside you so just how was he supposed to see your indicators?

Presumably you weren't using your wing mirrors either, to check there was nothing alongside 😳

MatildaTheCat · 10/08/2016 18:32

I regularly have to drive in our large local park which is frequented by large numbers of keen road cyclists, many in squads. Their road manners are non existent at best and downright appalling at other times. They are never at fault no matter how dangerous their behaviour is and think nothing of banging on the car and swearing viciously if they feel I've somehow slighted them.

YANBU, this breed of cyclist is a menace.

memememum · 10/08/2016 18:32

If you are making a manoeuvre out of your lane, then you must wait for a space. Those continuing and not making a manoeuvre have right of way.

It may feel natural to think 'oh I'm just slipping off to the left'. This feeling is the reason that, as well as right of way as described above being implicit in other parts of the highway code, there is also an explicit rule which reinforces the fact that vehicles continuing along in their own lane have right of way over those making a manoeuvre (even if they are on the left of you).

"Rule 182: Do not cut in on cyclists.
Use your mirrors and give a left-turn signal well before you turn left. Do not overtake just before you turn left and watch out for traffic coming up on your left before you make the turn, especially if driving a large vehicle. Cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users in particular may be hidden from your view."

SpeakNoWords · 10/08/2016 18:41

I had the same thing happen to me recently, a cyclist on my inside as I was intending to turn left. I saw her and stopped, no accident. Not sure why it needs such an extreme and angry reaction afterwards. I suppose him giving you the finger is the issue, but you didn't need to beep at him first. I'd just be pleased that you didn't kill or hurt someone, and that you were driving well enough to see him and stop. Don't really understand the rage tbh.

fascicle · 10/08/2016 18:47

As others have indicated with their questions, more info is needed as to positioning and intentions of cyclist at traffic lights and when you first became aware of him.

Familyof3or4 · 10/08/2016 18:50

From your post it's not even clear the cyclist was in the wrong. We're they on the pavement and crossing the road on the left or coming along the same road as you and going straight?

Needabiscuit · 10/08/2016 19:01

Maybe I'm hormonal being 7 months pregnant at the moment, but I know how to drive correctlyHmm

to set the scene there was 2 lanes, no right turn, so one is for straight ahead, and the other, which I was in, was straight or left turn, there was 2 cars in front of me, all of us had our indicators on, I didn't see him at that time waiting with us, so I assume he had just joined up to us as the lights were turning and we went forward

Indicators are working, and yes I do use my mirrors, but a cyclist should also be aware of their surroundings as well as they are more at risk of a serious injury in the circumstance

I didn't mean this to sound like I have more of a right to the road than others, there is a place for us all, however some people take the piss, and give others a bad name, I would never harm someone over a minor thing like this, but as I'v read the thread I'm not the only one who has had stories to tell, and pp are right in saying everyone who uses the road should pay insurance

So to clarify OP, you were turning left at a junction and the cyclist undertook you whilst going straight on and nearly caused a crash?

That must have been incredibly scary for you and well done for spotting him and stopping.

YWBU to run him over to teach him a lesson though so maybe don't do that...

AnneTwacky · 10/08/2016 19:16

Seems that people are adding extra bits to shine a better light on the cyclist.
The OP was angry but she had just had a fright. Of course the cyclist was at fault here. You should NEVER undertake a vehicle signalling left. It's not just against the Highway Code it's exceptionally dangerous as this shows.
Yes as drivers, we should check all our mirrors before manoeuvring but that does not negate the responsibility of other road users with regard to their own safety.

DeadGood · 10/08/2016 19:20

" I was stopped at traffic lights, indicating my intention to turn left, I went forward, then this fucker cyclist decides to try and play chicken just as I was taking the turn, I stupidly of course had to stop, I then beeped at the cunt cyclist to show I have saved his life"

You didn't save his life. You stopped yourself from killing him. There's a difference... And that's not how you use a horn
