What's wrong with this picture?

Yes, the woman behind the counter in the butchers shop is handing the customer the payment machine in her hygiene gloves! She will then no doubt handle raw meat wearing them and so completely negates the point in wearing them in the first place. I've also seen people handle cash whilst wearing them which is even worse.

I've asked staff members to remove them before it gives me such the rage!

Hmm. Is it ad for contactless? So the customer card never touches the scuzzy meaty card machine?

Handle the meat, then take them off!

Well I hope they change gloves straight away after before touching food again but still should have taken gloves off before handling machine.

I guess the contactless machine stays within the "safe" zone of the butcher side it only gets touched by butchers and would be cleaned as part of their processes?!
Not sure but I have heard that people wash their hands a lot more than they change gloves and that gloves do lead to a lot of cross contamination in retail settings. that's why environmental health don't dictate that you use gloves only that you have good handwashing practices.

I saw someone in a shop recently who had one gloved hand for the food, one ungloved for the money. He handed over the ice cream in the gloved hand, took the money with ungloved, and handed back change with the gloved one

It isn't a purely contactless machine, plenty of customers will need to chip and pin on that device, which is now all meaty....

As someone who used disposable gloves at work for 10 years (lab job) that picture makes me squirmy. Aargh.

It's not only card machines, I once bought cooked meat from a deli and the assistant picked up the paper (to put meat on) and rubbed it on her apron to make it straight I asked her to get another piece and not do that, she looked at me as if I was from another planet she really didn't understand the problem I had. Some people just don't think.

But is the picture not making the point that this is why contactless is better?

I've seen this. This is why I wash my meat.
Also this happens with ice cream vans, kebabs shops etc.

I was once in a chippy and the man LICKED his fingers to pick up a piece of paper to wrap them in!

I said "I don't want them now" and walked out!

I stopped using our local butcher for similar reasons (bagging up my raw chicken, then taking my money and handing me the change with the same chickeney hand ).

I always ask for people to put new gloves on, I say it with a smile so they can't take offence. I've never had anyone refuse, they usually look a bit sheepish as they know they're supposed to change gloves

This is why my fabulous butchers are so brilliant. Butchers do the meat, tell you the price and you go pay at the pay window on the other side staffed by a non butcher.

I think, in some cases, people seem to think once their hands are gloved, all is well. I used to like one place that I went to for lunch until I saw the gloved hand practices. Surely handling knives, door handles etc, then food, all with the same gloves is not hygienic.
I don't go there now.

The lady in our sandwich shop takes your money, rifles through the till for change then gives you coins back in her hygiene gloves. Then she makes the next person's sandwiches.

I try not to think about it too hard.

I agree very strongly with RachelOGreeps observations. I've seen similar bad practice in laboratories, where it's now the norm to wear gloves. Glove wearing seems to:
(a) Actively encourage slovenly behaviour.
(b) Be an excuse for not actually training people to handle materials (food, chemicals or whatever) safely.

I handle food and my company actively discourage gloves because people wash their hands more than change gloves!

YY Cauliflower sandwich shops round here are the worst. The people working there seem to view the gloves as protecting their hands from dirt.

^ yes, that's exactly how they are (mis-)used! Like they are for the benefit of the wearer.

Not raw meat and the gloved person doesn't handle money but all Subways i've been in so far have glove practises that I don't like (probably just me as i'm a funny bugger). I don't eat onion in any form, it tastes horrid, it makes my stomach feel bad and onion powder makes my throat itchy and sore (I'm a delight to cook for ). Subway workers use one glove for everything, meat and salad which includes onion and it really bugs me.

I'm sure I was taught years ago that certain foods required separate serving tools because of strong flavours and/or allergies such as tomato, onion and pepper.

Like Durham I always ask them to change their gloves as cheerfully as possible.
