beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

This would be a 'zero fucks' dinner for me. Which we are having more often than I would ideally like, but it also happens more often than I like that by dinner time, I have zero fucks left to give and cannot manage a meal kids may or may not eat.

catsofa · 08/08/2016 08:40

Sorry i haven't rtft so forgive me if this has been said, but ketchup reduces cancer? Really?!?

charliethebear · 08/08/2016 08:42

I would say its a good acceptable meal that is fairly healthy.
It also depends what you mean by healthy, does that mean low in calories/high in nutrients? I dont think a particular food or meal is healthy i think that a diet as a whole is. For example you could say spinach was healthy but a diet consisting purely of spinach is not obviously. And different people have different nutritional requirements. Meaning what's healthy for one person might not be healthy for another.
I think labeling sausages beans and mash junk is ridiculous.

PinguForPresident · 08/08/2016 08:45

It's a lovely, simple dinner, but healthy it ain't!

Nothing wrong with beans, mash is just simple carbs - not healthy at all - and sausages are full of fat afn processed to heck (which is why they're so delicious!)

Absolutely fine to eat this meal, but if the OP thinks it's healthy, i'd wonder what other foods she's eating thinking they're healthy.

Artandco · 08/08/2016 08:45

That link basically says tomatoes have been linked to lower prostate cancer. Not tomato ketchup. Just tomatoes, more when cooked. So so you can eat them without the mountains of sugar for same effect

Artandco · 08/08/2016 08:46

It's like people who feed their children those carrot flavours crisps as they have carrot in! Just feed them a carrot if you want that

BartholinsSister · 08/08/2016 08:47

I haven't read the DM article, but how much ketchup do they need to squirt up there, and how often?

WhatamessIgotinto · 08/08/2016 08:48

Stopped reading the full thread as I thought my head may explode. The self righteousness is hilarious and, I suspect in some cases, slightly disingenuous.

Last night we had sausages (from the local farm shop, so no need to panic dear reader), carrot and potato mash, beans (peas for DS). Luckily we are all still alive this morning.

We have a pretty healthy diet, a little bit of everything in moderation with lots of fruit and veg. We also have the occasional blowout when we sit in front of a film and eat shit; I'm fine with that.

Most meals can be junk depending on the quality of the food but you can't really compare sausage, beans and mash with a deep fried sausage and chips from the chippy for example.

I sometimes wonder how I'm alive, had this most weekends when I was a kid. Sausage from the local butchers, grandad' s spuds mashed with milk and butter and Heinz beans. We last had this about a month ago. I buy the low salt/sugar beans, local sausage and put grilled tomatoes on the side. Mash has to be made with hot milk and butter. Think we'll have it for dinner tonight.

user7755 · 08/08/2016 08:51

I don't think it's healthy but it's not junk.

Beans are OK, mash is meh, depends on the sausage - might be great, might be eyeholes, ear holes and arseholes.

However, the main issue is that the only acceptable way to eat mash is with gravy and you can't have gravy with beans.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 08/08/2016 08:53

Mash and beans with a protein source (usually fish fingers here) is one of the few ways I can get my food refusing 4.5 year old to eat. It's a standby meal and I'll have nothing said against it!:o

not healthy but we would have it as a treat meal

celeste83 · 08/08/2016 08:54

I love bangers n mash, its one of my specialities, I do good mashed potatoe Smile I have to sayi consider it to be a bit of a naughty meal when it comes to healthy food, but as you say it does have positives too. We only haveit during the winter about once a week, its too heavy a meal for summer I find.

MsJamieFraser · 08/08/2016 08:57

Nonunion the healthy at all, and also depend how you make it, adding ketchup also is just rank and adding sugar.

This thread makes me sad. Are there really so many unfulfilled and lonely women out there? Every 3-4 months? Maybe a job or a night out? Its like the 1950s here sometimes. Except this lot feel like they have to brandish exceptional mummyhood as a justification for existence.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 08/08/2016 09:01

I surprised at so many people who thought beans were good or ok but mash bad/meh/ nothingness.

Spuds are great! Personally i don't understand why they're not 1 of 5 a day, they are packed full of vitamins and fibre and seem healthier than a sugary fruit, for example. And certainly healthier than fruit juice or smoothie or dried fruit which do count. I personally think it was to emphase variety, because in this country we have problems getting people to eat veg but everyone regularly eats potato. So it was more like yeah you're doing ok I'm potatoes, now try and have more cabbage etc.

celeste83 · 08/08/2016 09:01

All the potatoe is quite carb heavy though Ego, thats what i meant by naughty, but at least it is home made food and ultimately far better for you than ready made meals Smile

Purplebluebird · 08/08/2016 09:02

If you put some more vegetables alongside it, I'd say it's fine. Otherwise it's one of those simple meals that you do occasionally, but doesn't seem that good for you (I don't like sausages).

Too salty to be considered healthy, I'd say, but not un-nutritious. Good amount of protein, and fibre from the beans too. Might've added a few peas too although I don't like the things.
