beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

It's a shit meal. No veg potatoes don't really count, sausages are a crap source of protein, the beans are the best bit, but laden with sugar. I'm with your MIL, not a meal I'd serve.

0hCrepe · 08/08/2016 05:38

Your MIL is right it isn't healthy and it wouldn't be a good idea to give it to your kids every night.
But Did she say you shouldn't ever give it to your kids, or was she just pointing it out?

Handbag101 · 08/08/2016 07:27

I think it's a lovely meal. Going to have it for dinner this week. Yummy.

DeadGood · 08/08/2016 07:29

I would eat this meal, for sure, but would not consider it healthy

pearlylum · 08/08/2016 07:31

I don't buy sausages. All the fatty rejected bits of meat mushed together to make it look edible.

timeforabrewnow · 08/08/2016 07:43

Pearlylum - tell us - what should we be eating??

We had sausages for tea last night and I'm concerned for my family's health now.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 08/08/2016 07:43

Nah, there's dinner then there's pretend mumsnet dinner

Artandco · 08/08/2016 07:46

To me it's junk food

It something some people serve at kids party events such as at indoor play areas.

Actually it reminds me of war time type food, like corned beef hash

ifyoulikepinacolada · 08/08/2016 07:46

I think there's a difference between healthy, fine, and not healthy. Sausages, beans and mash is fine. But it's not actively good for you which is what I take to mean as 'healthy'. I'd eat and serve it but I wouldn't think it was ideal to have twice a week or something! The sugar, salt and additive content is just too high.

Yes, it might have been served back in the halcyon days of low child obesity. Those kids were far more active than the younger generation are today, and they didn't snack anywhere near the amount we do now. It's just one piece of the puzzle!

pearlylum · 08/08/2016 07:46

timeforabrewnow i don't give a shit what you eat.
Eat carpet tiles for all I care.

BluePitchFork · 08/08/2016 07:52

yabu
it's an 'ok once a months' type of meal.
not too bad, but not worse than a burger at a fast food place.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/08/2016 07:59

Is there a link to the evidence that the government only didn't include potatoes because they thought people would eat chips and crisps? I can't find anything to suggest that might be the case.

CauliflowerBalti · 08/08/2016 08:03

Bloody love bangers and mash. Had it last night.

We have swede in our mash, and serve it with peas and gravy, not baked beans. The sausages are good ones.

I've never really thought of it as healthy - or indeed unhealthy. But now I will. Diet food ftw!

timeforabrewnow · 08/08/2016 08:04

Mmmmm - carpet tiles - sound delicious.

Thanks for your helpful alternative suggestion.

JemimaMuddledUp · 08/08/2016 08:05

It isn't as bad as a lot of fast food, but I think I'd struggle to call it healthy TBH.

The quality of the sausages is a big deciding factor - what is their meat content?

Mash is fine, just potatoes with a splash of milk. Kids need carbs.

Beans aren't the best, I would tend to do cabbage, carrots and gravy with sausage and mash. But once in a while they won't kill you!

As a similar but slightly healthier alternative, in the winter I make a sausage casserole with decent sausages (you don't need many as the other ingredients pad them out), cannelini beans, peppers, onions, tinned tomatoes and some rosemary and chilli. I serve it on top of baked potatoes. Proper comfort food and with the same basic components (including lycopene) but a bit less fat, salt and sugar.

Apologies for Daiky Fail link. This isn't where I read it originally (can't remember where) but this alludes to the argument I read.

Make sausage and bean pie. Mix sliced sausage beans and onion (all already cooked and hot) in a pot, top with mash and cheese and bake until crispy.

She'll freak at the cheese I guess

Aeroflotgirl · 08/08/2016 08:15

I think it's fine, I sometimes do it when ds 4 comes back from nursery in the afternoon.

It's like most meals, it's perfectly acceptable as part of an overall balanced diet.

Not a meal I could get upset about bug not one I would rave about its health benefits either. It's a meal, and a tasty one (if with decent sausage!) at that.

Sirzy · 08/08/2016 08:29

That said the idea that ketchup reduces the risk of cancer did make me laugh!

Artandco · 08/08/2016 08:33

Mrs - that's rubbish, why would people do that.

Can't they just eat a similar meal that's less processed?

Sausages - swap something unprocessed like chicken/ regular pork/ beef

Mash - continue

Beans - swap for something less processed like regular veg

Ketchup - ditch

Doesn't have to be, ' this meal isn't that great, fuck it lets go even worse..'

Artandco · 08/08/2016 08:35

The problem is this type of meal is something to just have occasionally. To me occasionally is something once every 3-4 months or so. To others occasionally is twice a week
