beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

Sausage, beans and mash is the food of the gods. Fact.

bloomburger · 07/08/2016 22:26

It would be classed as s junk meal in our house.

Normal potatoes aren't a great source of carbs, sausages are a processed meat (should be severely restricted) often high in fat and most commercially produced baked beans are full of sugar.

PurpleDaisies · 07/08/2016 22:27

I'd either go sausage, mash, peas and gravy or sausage, cheesy mash and beans.

UmbongoUnchained · 07/08/2016 22:27

It's not what I would have as a healthy dinner. That's hang over food. Which says everything really!

SpecialStains · 07/08/2016 22:29

Yabu - mash should be served with peas and pickle!

But yes, I also love baked beans, plenty of protein in them and ok once a week or so.

I want creamy, buttery mash now!

SharonfromEON · 07/08/2016 22:32

Good wholesome meal...

I wouldn't consider it junk food nor a healthy meal..somewhere inbetween.

However I prefer it with gravy and peas

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/08/2016 22:33

It's not the best. Nor is it the worst.

As long as over all diet is healthy it's perfectly fine.

You'd be as I'll living off lettuce daily as you would living off sausage.

CremeEggThief · 07/08/2016 22:34

I don't like mash with beans. But IMO, veggie sausages , chips and beans or veggie sausages, mash and peas are not "junk food".

LockedOutOfMN · 07/08/2016 22:34

madhurjazz Yes, it's a healthy meal; it contains nutrients.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/08/2016 22:35

Fine as part of an otherwise healthy and balanced diet, but on it's own not healthy and probably not something you should eat too often.

Difficult to see how you could get 5 a day if what I assume is the main meal of the day doesn't contain any vegetables.

TheGruffaloMother · 07/08/2016 22:35

I find it quite sad that a good solid staple of a meal like that is considered junk food by so many. Sad It's not the epitome of health food, obviously, but it isn't horrendous and can easily be slotted into a day's food intake without having to make big allowances elsewhere.

roundtable · 07/08/2016 22:39

How the frick is mashed potato anything like bread?

Bread - not natural food
Potatoes/butter - natural.

I really don't get the way some people think about food.

Wolpertinger · 07/08/2016 22:39

I wouldn't go as far as healthy but it's not the worst.

Beans - OK if they are low sugar, otherwise, well yes they count as 1 of 5 a day but v sugary.

Sausages - would depend on the quality of the sausage

Mash - fine as long as you don't already have a weight problem, if you do carbs are not your friend. And how much butter in the mash? Grin

But then where are all the rest of the green veg? Some salad/peas/broccoli/kale or whatever.

So it's OK. But in this house it would be a junk meal.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/08/2016 22:43

The low salt low sugar beans taste like crap. If your gonna take the hit on sugary beans at least enjoy it Grin

Let's face it the whole things highly processed anyway. Might as well make the most of it.

Always tomorrow for kale and salmon GrinWink

LaurieMarlow · 07/08/2016 22:43

It would come down to the sausage quality for me. If that's high, then it's fine. I wouldnt be too concerned about the salt/sugar in an occasional portion of beans.

An aside, but I hate the use of the word 'junk' for perfectly good food. It's not a fucking pot noodle.

0pti0na1 · 07/08/2016 22:44

Beans and mash - fine. Sausages - saturated fat, processed meat aren't the best. Have you tried reduced fat sausages, or vegetarian sausages?

gingerboy1912 · 07/08/2016 22:44

That was a weekly staple meal in our house when I was growing up with the addition of a fried egg if we were lucky.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/08/2016 22:46

Couldn't agree more, Giles. Much rather have 'proper' beans less often than have those low salt/low sugar monstrosities.

I'm sure they are probably an acquired taste but I've no intention of eating more of them to acquire it. Grin

PurpleDaisies · 07/08/2016 22:46

The low salt low sugar beans taste like crap

Hear, hear! I bought them by accident once. Had to add a truckload of salt and sugar to make them edible.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 07/08/2016 22:46

This is a nice wintery tea, when you feel cold!
You could mix it up a little; I do broccoli and then have sweet potato mash, with decent sausages (do them in the oven; a lot of the fat comes out but they stay plump).

ovosmexidos · 07/08/2016 22:49

It's not great. It's now awful, but I wouldn't give it to my kids too regularly.

SaucyJack · 07/08/2016 22:50

I don't think it's a particularly healthy dinner. Processed meat and no fresh veg.

It's summat I'd chuck in the oven when I was feeling lazy. With frozen mash, natch. In for a penny, in for a pound.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/08/2016 22:50

Beans and mash - fine. Sausages - saturated fat, processed meat aren't the best. Have you tried reduced fat sausages, or vegetarian sausages

Again- taking out the fat doesn't make the sausage less processed and less bad for you. It is just less satisfying and quite frankly a waste of the calories/processed meat hit etc.

If it's not your sole meal on a daily basis. It's fine.

JaniceBattersby · 07/08/2016 22:51

I'd say it's just about as healthy as you can get. It might not be healthy for the body, but I think it's really healthy for the mind to have delicious, hearty, warm food that you can just enjoy without worrying about how many food groups are in there.

And what's the point in even having sausage, beans and mash if you start arsing about using quorn sausages and low-salt beans? It completely negates the reason for having it. Because it tastes BLOODY LOVELY. Crack on OP.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 07/08/2016 22:51

Of course it's not healthy - the beans and ketchup are full of sugar and processed meat is a major cause of bowel cancer. But yes, it includes one of your five a day and it's satisfying. It's less unhealthy than, say, a takeaway burger or fish and chips, but it's not actively good for you!
