beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

Today we have afternoon tea out as have my two young nieces (6y and 10y) staying this week. It is one of 14y DDs favourites but they'd not had one before but relished the mixture of sandwiches - all with yummy butter (some on soft white bread rather than just wholemeal) and no crusts - and desserts. Then scones spread with thick cream and heaps of jam. And to finish off a selection of other desserts (macaroons, raspberries/cream and marshmallows, blueberry cheesecake and mini cake) too - all delicious but full of sugar, fats and whatever else, and no vegetables to be seen (well there was some tomatoes on a sandwich but they picked the off!)

Pub for dinner later too as grandparents visiting - so not sure how much goodness will be there - lots of homemade type food but served with chips :D

Hulababy · 11/08/2016 17:23

Oh Angel Delight - DD loves it!

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 17:28

Oh Hula - that tea sounds gorgeous.

limitedperiodonly · 11/08/2016 17:37

What's the fennel bulb doing there?

Hulababy · 11/08/2016 17:39

MrsKoala - the girls, esp the two youngest who hadn't experienced a proper tiered Afternoon tea out before, were in heaven! Not sure how much they will eat when we go out with grandparents later though as they kind of OD'd on cakes/sweets!

But its like a mini holiday having them come stay for a week - and surely we can over indulge on holiday yes?!

PrimalLass · 11/08/2016 17:40

I would have thought it would be watery with a tin of toms rather than puree to thicken it up and pork is too bland to carry the taste.

Just take the lid off and let it cook down. It would be fine.

PrimalLass · 11/08/2016 17:42

I always put courgette in chili - chopped finely.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 17:45

I always buy fennel as i love the taste, but dh hates it so i never get round to cooking it. I used to roast belly pork strips with fennel for my lunch and have it with a huge spinach salad and an oily dressing AND mayo, but i've not had the energy.

I don't really know what to do with it now.

I love afternoon tea hula, i'm not into cakes in general but i do like a good scone and butter and jam and clotted cream. And better if washed down with prosecco. (altho a taxi driver mentioned he liked prosecco the other day so now that's out! - Wink to anyone who listened to the Mitchell and Webb link earlier!)

PrimalLass · 11/08/2016 17:56

Your dinner sounds great MrsK.

We are having pork and apple burgers, mini potatoes roasted with garlic and rosemary, and feta salad. Prep time = 5 minutes.

We've already had sausages this week Grin

ARichVernacular · 11/08/2016 18:17

Having read most of this thread, I'm regretting putting the sausages straight in the freezer yesterday.

Not that my children would appreciate it as one hates sausages and one hates beans!

PickAChew · 11/08/2016 18:27

I can hear the clenching from here.

Once upon a time. There would have been mushrooms on this plate, but have since discovered that they give me bad wind.

I like fennel in all sorts of things. My husband says he doesn't but I ignore him.

DerekSprechenZeDick · 11/08/2016 18:35

Kids had potato waffles, beans and sausages today.

Then strawberries and cream for after.

I had waffles and sausages. I don't like beans at all.

This thread has firmly proven to me that MN posters are not real Grin

Ragwort · 11/08/2016 18:35

Looks delicious Pick - a bit too healthy with that tomato on the plate Grin.

I am settling down to a couple of hot cross buns with peanut butter and a glass of wine for dinner tonight Grin.

PickAChew · 11/08/2016 18:39

Not even trashed my diet with that meal. I earned this with a massive walk, this afternoon.

Chicken breast can fuck right off (at least until tomorrow when I'm making a nice, rich Thai green curry for dinner)

Kids had waffles pizza (the small Chicago town ones) and mushy peas today.

Do I get worst mum award???!!

Pork belly and fennel sounds lovely, btw. I might do that come the autumn and say it's strips of onion.

We're having a Moroccanish lamb stew. Cubed lamb, only about 6oz in total for two; saffron, cumin, dried coriander, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne, salt and tomato puree; covered in water and lamb stock. Bring to boil, add lots of vegetables - onions, carrots, potatoes, turnips, cannellini beans (not Heinz this time) - and courgettes and tomatoes put in near the end.

Served with couscous with plenty of butter.

limitedperiodonly · 11/08/2016 19:05

My shepherd's/cottage pie recipe is Delia's cheesy leeky topped one. My mum could never work out why it was the best until years later I revealed the secret - a pinch of cinnamon in the mince. If I'd have told her from the off, she'd have refused to try it, but conceded that being fooled was all right, just that once Grin

YvaineStormhold · 11/08/2016 19:06

I went mad in the end and did toad in the hole.

Carbtastic and frikkin gorgeous

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 19:11

My mum makes that one too limited, i'm not a big cinnamon fan, but it's nice in the Shepherds pie, not so much in the cottage one. However, i love pretty much all shepherds/cottage pies so i'm still willing to eat it, especially if it's fridge cold first thing in the morning. mmmm

If you are doing the pork belly a rub of herbs de provence or ground fennel seeds before roasting is good.

limitedperiodonly · 11/08/2016 19:53

Thanks for the pork belly tip Mrs K. I might give roast conference pears a whirl. I've never tried them but I've heard they work with autumny pork.

yvraine I haven't had toad for years. What do you do it with? Gravy? Peas and carrots? Peas and carrots are my go-to veg. Third is cabbage braised in butter and water.

GreenGoth89 · 12/08/2016 19:06

IMO no - sausages are processed meat, potatoes are very high in carbs and not that nutritious compared to other veg, beans are a Good source of fibre but they often have loads of sat and sugar added - again another processed food.

I wouldn't feed my DSS it more than once a week unless we were really pushed for time.

limitedperiodonly · 12/08/2016 19:08

What do you feed your children on GreenGoth?
