beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

i am both tempted and scared by dumplings. Can you do them in the slow cooker? I tend to do all my stews in there.

Must be able to. They take 20 minutes on the simmer with the lid on in an oven. Don't know how that works with a slow cooker. If they're inedible you could use them as ammunition.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 12:08

In the 80s mum mum also embraced those sponge bases and if we had her relatives over she would spread it with streaberry jam and then put whole strawbs all pointing upwards over it and cover with a sachet of quick gel setting strawberry jelly and serve it sliced with cream. That is such a memory of my childhood. That and the tinned salmon vol au vents with a twirl of cucumber on the top. Fanny Craddock would have been proud Grin

MrsK. I too once made the courgette plant mistake.

I got 4 to grow prodigiously before I read that '2 is more than enough for a family'. We are a couple, one of whom doesn't really like courgettes. Didn't make that mistake again.

Two favourite recipes to hide courgettes are a chocolate courgette cake like this one see if your DH spots that one? Grin

Or fritters that were courgettes, feta cheese, gram flour, eggs and spices. I think it's a Hairy Bikers recipe.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 12:28

We have 10 courgette plants! Shock

I will try those recipes, thanks, ds1 might even eat the one with chocolate

I do love courgettes luckily!

Further food update.

Todays lunch is tinned beans and sausages on toast, thanks to this thread.

Usually I cook proper sausages, chop them into beans and smother it in cheese so its known as cheesy beany weiners and is a firm favourite but today we have gone full on dirty with the tinned version!

Oh MrsD that's given me the strongest craving for angel delight-generic whipped pudding. Guess what's going on my shopping list...

YvaineStormhold · 11/08/2016 15:16

Ooh, that would be awesome with ginger biscuits and butterscotch angel delight...

PurpleDaisies · 11/08/2016 15:17

Butterscotch is my favourite too yvaine. I'm sending dh out now for some...

BarbaraofSeville · 11/08/2016 15:26

As we're getting down to the bottom of the food barrel, this might be a good time to admit that when I make sausage and mash I use instant mash (I like Sainsbury's own brand best - I even sometimes eat it as a snack with grated cheese mixed in).

I use instant gravy (Bisto Best) to make onion gravy for the sausage and mash. I do always chop my own onions and use decent sausges though.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 15:34

Oh I wish I liked Angel delight. I was always jealous of everyone at school having it, but I can't stand it :(

I used to make a low carb cheesecake by mixing cream cheese with lemon jello then putting it on crushed ginger and oat biscuits and butter. That was nice.

YvaineStormhold · 11/08/2016 15:48

Sausage and mash for us tonight. Using Sains Taste the Difference mash because making mashed potatoes is the only kitchen job I can't hack for convenience

squoosh · 11/08/2016 15:50

Give your kids' health a fighting chance, at least give them peanut M&Ms with their sausages. Don't you know how dangerous mash is? I heard that even being in the same room as a bowl of mash can make you put weight on.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 16:08

I think we are having a chippy dinner tonight. I haven't had time to go to the shop and am now exhausted. We have pork mince, onions, courgettes (obvs) and a fennel bulb in the fridge. In the cupboard we have a tin of toms, a tin of kidney beans, some sachets of brown rice and some cous cous. I'm not sure i can make anything out of that, nor am i sure i would want to.

Artandco · 11/08/2016 16:46

Chilli?

EssentialHummus · 11/08/2016 16:53

MrsKoala round my way that's a recipe Grin

Today I chucked the contents of the fridge into a pot with a tin of toms and a stock cube and, voila, stew!

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 16:54

I'm thinking that would be pretty foul Art. I did toy with the idea. But is pork mince, onions, a tin of toms, some chilli, chopped courgette and a tin of kidney beans nice? It doesn't really sound that nice to me. I have no garlic or tom puree either. I am visualising watery tomatoey mince on brown rice.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 16:56

I have been eating figs from the garden all day so maybe i'm not into it because i'm not that hungry. We also have a glut of figs!

Artandco · 11/08/2016 17:06

But you have all basics for chilli? Mince, onions, tomatoes, kidney beans. Rice on the side. Add a side of courgettes if you want as have so many, but I wouldn't put them in the chilli. Obviously you need to have some chilli of some sort, dried/ powder fine. Why would it be watery? You aren't adding anything watery

GinandTits · 11/08/2016 17:06

Go with the chippy. I'm having kebab. polishes halo

YvaineStormhold · 11/08/2016 17:07
Shock

Fuck!

I got the mash out of the fridge and it went straight for my throat!

I tried to subdue it but it managed to make it out of the kitchen window and it's now rampaging around the street randomly attacking my neighbours!

The SWAT team are on their way. Lock your doors.

squoosh · 11/08/2016 17:10

You can't have chilli without cheese and sour cream. Respect the dairy.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 17:12

Not really, chilli is minced beef and has peppers, garlic and tomato puree in it in this house. I would have thought it would be watery with a tin of toms rather than puree to thicken it up and pork is too bland to carry the taste. It defo will be strange. Especially with no peppers. We do have lazy minced chilli and cumin and oregano.

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 17:13

We do have cheese and thick greek yogurt (which we use instead of soured cream anyway as no one can taste the difference).

MrsKoala · 11/08/2016 17:20

oh i've just found carrots too and some butter beans. Right i'm going for a pork and veg spicy mince and cous cous/rice. With pitta bread from the freezer and grated cheese and yogurt. Does that sound gross? Grin probably.
