beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

I don't know anyone who thinks fruity yoghurt is "healthy". Still fine to eat it though.

LaurieMarlow · 10/08/2016 11:19

Just as no one is suggesting that baked beans are super healthy. Just a decent, everyday food. Rather than 'junk'.

So that's why we should all be eating/cooking sweet potatoes which have twice the amount of sugar as normal spuds Hmm

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 10/08/2016 11:27

What's with the recent sweet potato obsession? Were they even available in the average supermarket 5 years ago? How did we survive until sweet potato and his pal butternut squash marched in to save the day!

How about baked beans that come with sausages already in them? Better or worse than crack-cocaine?

LaurieMarlow · 10/08/2016 11:34

laurie but potatoes are basically just sugar once you get your masher on them

And while I've spent a considerable amount of time laughing my leg off at this, it's a perfect illustration of the more serious point you've been making all thread.

If you're confused about food, hysterical nonsense like the M&M's point only succeeds in blowing all common sense out of the water. And if mashed potatoes are deemed to be the equivalent of crack cocaine then fuck it, I may as well feed my kids wotsits.

There's a huge middle ground between chia-kale-bake and haribo. I'd love to see a bit more engaging of brain/basic common sense on these food threads.

MissHooliesCardigan · 10/08/2016 11:35

I think sweet potatoes are seen as more exotic than King Edwards. And where the hell has purple sprouting broccoli come from? Apparently, anyone who doesn't eat it (or avocados) will shrink 4 inches and lose half their brain cells.

notamummy10 · 10/08/2016 11:37

MrsDeVere sweet potato is healthier for you, it has a higher level of vitamin A than white potatoes do and also has vitamin C in it. Alongside calcium, potassium, fibre, iron, vitamin B1.

HandbagCrab · 10/08/2016 11:37

NHS recommends no more than 6g of salt a day chilli and my bog standard morrisons beans have 1g per half a tin, so 1/6 of daily adult recommended intake.

I don't think anyone knows what's healthy anymore. I'm avoiding 'healthy' fish as I'm pregnant and can only eat it a couple of times a week due to the mercury in it from polluted seas. I'm avoiding 'healthy' salad that is not from a trusted source due to the risks of food poisoning. Everyone thought low carb Atkins was bonkers 30 years ago, now people avoid carbs (and fat just in case). Recipes are full of organic chia seeds, bee pollen and coconut anything as these are 'healthy'. People avoid eating carrots and apples as they are 'full of sugar'. Maybe if food is just food then most people would end up eating a balanced diet anyway, without the angst.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 10/08/2016 11:38

Shame sweet potato tastes so bad.

Barth that's what I'm having for lunch... Beans and sausages on toast!! Grin I also like spaghetti and sausages too!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 10/08/2016 11:39

I'm pretty sure she was joking.

YvaineStormhold · 10/08/2016 11:46

I want peanut M and Ms now.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 10/08/2016 11:52

I read that chocolate M&Ms are more nutritious than lentils.

LaurieMarlow · 10/08/2016 11:54

I'm Irish, so therefore biased, but I remember reading somewhere that the 19th century Irish peasantry had a more or less exclusive diet of potatoes, cabbage and milk. Which provided an exceptionally 'whole' diet for just three components and single handedly nourished them until the potato famine hit.

So, I've never bought the modern view that potatoes are fairly useless nutritionally. They're the backbone of an entire nation Wink.

I'm lucky in that DS eats well and a has a varied diet, but his grannies don't consider him to be adequately fed unless potatoes have been consumed.

I declare bunty the queen of healthy eating. When's your book coming out? Grin

chilipepper20 · 10/08/2016 12:36

I think that is why people give up.

I sympathize that not everyone is a scientist, but it isn't that confusing. Anyone with a phone can look up the recommended daily intake for sugar, fat and salt. Then, they can twist their wrist and read the label on any tin.

But this is precisely why packaged foods should be regarded with some scepticism. Of course things are marketed as healthy. Companies are trying to sell you something! if you make baked beans yourself (not terribly easy by the way) you have complete control of the salt and sugar. The cost is of course knowledge and effort.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 10/08/2016 12:41

This thread is crazy. I can't imagine living off organic lentils and sweet potato mash, give me good old sausage and mash (or sausage and peanut M&Ms?????) anyday with a lake of Branston baked beans....mmmm

expatinscotland · 10/08/2016 12:42

The sweet potatoes you get here are vile. Old, hard, tasteless. I never eat them here because they're gross.
