beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

Urgh to sweet potato. Horrible stuff.
We are a no ketchup house here, I have no nutritional objection to it, but just not something we eat, the kids have never really eaten it either. last bottle I had was thrown out as it had been sitting around for years unopened.

I know you are right MrsDV. But sometimes i just feel so shit. I went on a kids picnic yesterday and i looked at all the variety and colours and textures of foods the other children were eating and i just wanted to cry. And i know what you mean about becoming unhinged about it all, a few days of DS1 not eating and i am a wreck, yet he is healthy and happy, so i am very lucky and I try to remember that when i read posts about sausages and ketchup (his staple diet!) being 'junk' and 'crap'.

Been to a naice farm shop, today and have sausage beans and oven chips on the menu for 3 of us, this week. The other one will have pasta with some red shite mixed in.

MrsK, baked beans* is the only veg one of mine will eat, if you don't count stewed rhubarb (which definitely needs sugar adding to make it palatable!). The other has a diet which does include veg but is so unadventurous and rigid, it's painful. Which is why he's not having the sausages, because they're the wrong ones!

*from a freshly opened tin - snap pots or previously refrigerated beans are invariably rejected. As are microwaved beans - they have to be simmered in a pan until going mushy, but not dried out. I'm toast if I get it wrong.

My kids' favourite meal in the world ever is beany bake. It's essentially mashed potatoes, cheese and baked beans layered up then baked in the oven. I dish it up with all sorts - usually sausages but not always. I often chuck some steamed veg on the plate too but that's just to try my luck if I'm honest!

We eat food that we like, mash (with butter and pepper) baked beans (Branston are best I think, they taste like Heinz used to before they started reducing salt and sugar), sausages (nice meaty ones) all fine and I happily feed my kids that any day.

Also happily feed them a fried breakfast.

People have gone potty over food, and treat it like a religion.

Some foods have super-food status, ahhhh, the magic of blueberries, brocoli, sweet potato and kale 😇

Other foods are EVIL! Wheatabix ir sugared cereal is "shit in a box", white bread/rice/pasta are "crap" and pure "sugar", and sugar = crack cocaine don't you know!

Real madness.

MrsK Please don't feel bad, you sound like a great mum. My friend's DD has ASD and I know the battles she goes through to get her to eat anything non-beige or a food that's touched another food.
Nobody is claiming that feeding your child nothing but Haribos and KFC bargain buckets is good parenting. However, this obsessing over the fat, sugar and salt content of every microgram that passes your child's lips is harmful in a different way and really isn't healthy.
Food isn't just about nutrition, it's also about pleasure and socialising. Cakes are part of our culture of celebrating - birthdays, weddings, christenings, first communion etc. They're not supposed to be healthy. The idea that a parent would not allow their child a slice of birthday cake because it's 'full of sugar' is really sad.
I remember a thread where an OP was apopoplectic when her 8 year old DD was given a single boiled sweet after a dance class.
It just seems such an utterly joyless way to live and gives kids very odd messages about food. There has to be some sort of middle ground.

MrsK my eldest was the fussiest eater she would gag at food I used to be in tears sometimes.
Her diet was mainly biege food for years still is to an extent no sauces no beans we just have to supplement their diet with the things they will eat you are doing your best Flowers

Dd is 20odd and she told me it is the texture of tbings she doesnt like. motherinferior i couldn't let dd go to friends houses for tea she used to get anxious at the thought of eating at other houses

Thank you all for the kind reassurances. I feel like a right attention seeking berk now Blush . I was tired and it had been a hard day and I let myself get upset. I'm sure no one intends to make people feel bad, but when i already feel guilty (no idea why) it doesn't take much to tip me over the edge. My fault entirely tho.

I am very lucky with ds1 as he isn't brand loyal, so I can buy the best possible sausages and fish cakes I can and the best possible ketchup and mayonnaise. We are also very fortunate that we can afford this. If we couldn't it would be cheap sausages and that's it. I feel that there for the grace of God go I. I never take for granted how lucky I am in that respect with ds, compared to other parents of Dc with asd.

And seriously, who the fuck rinses beans? Shock

I haven't RTWT but I don't think we need to obsess about food if our diets have a bit of everything. Apologies if this has been mentioned earlier but I remember a few years ago there was an item in the papers about a young lad (who must be grown up now) who had been seen by a doctor and pronounced fit and healthy despite only ever eating strawberry jam sandwiches. The jam had to be strawberry with 'no bits' (I'm with him on the 'bits') his poor mother had tried to get him to eat different things without success. I expect he eventually grew out of it, grew fairly fit and healthy, I'd love to know.

Really? they are eaten around the world? As frequently as in the UK?

I wouldn't call them junk (they are not haribos) but you have to be a bit careful. It's a processed food and has the trappings of processed food. 1/2 a tin (1 serving) has 1.2g salt. That's about 1/3 of the recommended daily intake for an adult.

I don't think people should be insane about food (of course) but people should be aware about what's in it. You definitely get lots of seemingly healthy food repackaged with bits in them, and they become decided unhealthy. Fruity yogourts for example contain far more sugar than plain yogourt + fruit. Does that mean you should never have it? of course not. But we should be aware of that when thinking that it's super healthy.
