beans mash and sausages is a healthy meal

Mother in law thinks its junk food. But the beans contain 1 of your 5 a day, mashed potatoes are just veg and a good source of carbs and the sausages are full of essential protein.

We often have ketchup, this has been shown to reduce many cancers like prostate, and a glass of juice.

Seems healthy to me and not junky.

And the 'weetabix is a treat' comment. Lordy, those poor children. I ponder their sad fate from time to time.

MrsJayy

We should probably buy shares in Hoola Hoops about now... Grin

FWIW DD1 (7yo) eats non-stop some days. She's 'obese' because she weighs more than the NHS think a 7 yo should weigh. She's off the top of the centile chart.

Of course she's more off the top of the charts for her height (height of an average 9 year old), and at sports day I got a load of jokey comments from parents about needing to feed her more, as her legs are getting thin. Seeing ribs? Hahahaaa, she can suck her tummy in so far that I wince.

I feed her 'well', pretty much following the food pyramid if you swap and put veg/fruit at the bottom and carbs on the second tier. This does mean she eats more of the sugary stuff at the top than some other children, because she just eats MORE and I need the variety.

Is she eating an unhealthy diet? Nobody who knows me IRL thinks so.

Artandco · 08/08/2016 18:32

Tbf weetabix alone isnt exactly a meal is it? It's wheat and milk. If your the same people having weetabix for breakfast, cheesy pasta for lunch, and sausage, mash and beans for dinner, that's basically a whole day of virtually 0 veg, fruit or nutrition. And yes, some people eat like this every day.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 08/08/2016 18:34

Makes you wonder what some people eat/feed their kids if weetabix is a occasional treat!! Shock

BabyGanoush · 08/08/2016 18:37

Glad this thread has turned

Current food faddiness in people my age (40s) is alarming.

all my friends seem to be doong Hemsley and Hemsley and banning things like bread and potatoes Hmm

"Because carbs are just pure sugar! And sugar is as addictive and bad for you as crack cocaine! " ...

... So, If you feed your kids mash, you may as well give them crack cocaine Wink

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 08/08/2016 18:40

The thought of my childhood if a weetabix was considered a treat makes me shudder Grin

I loved the shit in a box thread Grin

Most of DD's meals are things like pasta bolognese, fish fingers/sausage mash and beans, cheesy pasta etc. In an ideal world we'd have time and energy to slave over the oven cooking pan-seared hummous and kale courgetti avocado bake or whatever the latest healthy meal the Boden-clad kiddies are gobbling up and demanding more of these days, but it's not going to happen.

motherinferior · 08/08/2016 18:41

No, it's not 'zero nutrition'. It's zero fruit and veg. So you add in some fruit and veg. Which is easily enough done out here in the real world where people do eat fruit and veg.

But then I don't believe that Carbs Are Evil and I'm not about to lead a life free of pasta or rice.

MrsKoala · 08/08/2016 18:49

Art that is better than a days food for my dc. Ds1 will have toast and jam, chicken sandwich and breadsticks, 4 sausages with loads of ketchup & Mayo. And some jammy dodgers. I consider that quite a good day. Some days I get porridge and honey into him for breakfast and a petit filous and a couple of dunks of houmous and maybe a cube of apple or bite of broccoli. But those are very good days and I feel epic! This is still an improvement on a year ago.

Ds2 would eat what you describe as a normal day, maybe a dippy egg for breakfast. Maybe some blended veg if I hid them in something or a banana or chunk of Apple. But not much else.

I do give them vit drops too. The paed reckons this is s good diet compared to how much worse it could be!

This thread is Hmm

That meal is absolutely fine. I agree with every one of MrsDVs posts.
Fucking hell.
Today my 2 year old had rice krispies (sainsburys ones) for breakfast
McDonald's for dinner
and lasagne for tea. (With my sauce which I blend veggies into and broccoli on the side)
I give absolutely zero fucks. It's not like she has it every day.

Thelaundrylady · 08/08/2016 19:55

This thread made me so hungry I've made toad in the hole for tea with baked beans AND tomato ketchup - it was lovely Grin

TheInternetIsForPorn · 08/08/2016 20:02

Didn't quite get to sausages. So we had hot dogs. Yum.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/08/2016 20:09

Hula, I disagree. I think we're going to need a whole week of sausage based recipes not just one day.

Is anyone else having sausage, mash and beans for dinner tonight, or is it just me?

HerRoyalFattyness · 08/08/2016 20:11

I was just going to do beans on toast on Thursday (because I will be busy all day so it's quick and easy)
I think I'll buy some sausages and stick them on too. Grin

Whatever is in the shop Grin

chilipepper20 · 08/08/2016 20:19

There is a clear class divide when it comes to food.

of course there is, and it is expressed in the problems you mention. It's not expressed as the rich get to eat fat because it is fancy, and the poor don't. The rich people's fatty food is simply better for you. I specifically disagreed with "rich people get to eat expensive 'junk'" because their food isn't junk. Fat doesn't make it junk.

LaurieMarlow · 08/08/2016 20:25

I seriously thought about it. But had salmon to use up, so didn't follow through. Definitely later the the week.

I don't think we are going to turn back the clock on processed food so I really think pressure should be put on manufacturers to gradually reduce the sugar and salt content in their stuff.

there already is pressure on them to that. the trouble is people like salt, sugar and fat. a lot of manufacturers have made low salt, low sugar and low fat versions of some of their popular foods, but often they aren't as popular as the originals. What needs to happen is people need to be educated and then care about the health consequences. Red Bull and donuts contain an awful lot of sugar.

But I also disagree that we can't turn back the clock on processed foods. We have made quite a bit of progress since when I was a kid. A lot of people used to think a daily mcdonalds was perfectly fine, and now we don't.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 08/08/2016 20:29

What do you mean chilli? Rich people eat avocados and walnuts and poor people eat Frey bentos pies and mr Kipling?
