To think we deserve a recession?

ladyjadey · 05/08/2016 00:34

Although it will hurt my family, my wage and DPs wage, I kind of think we deserve to be punished for being 'the stupid brits' who voted for brexit. I voted remain and sincerely wish we had, but now we are leaving I think we deserve what we get. In future people might think twice.....

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 05/08/2016 09:36

I voted remain. Brexit could cause all kinds of unhappiness for my family. However, as that is what was voted for, I'm hoping that as a country we just get on with it and work out the best of a bad situation.

I want brexit to work.

Pointless waiting for everything to go to shite so you can day I told you so.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 05/08/2016 09:39

The poor are already living the life of what a recession would be like so we won't notice

Sadly, I think there is always more to lose than one thinks. Especially in a post-Brexit Britain governed by May.

user1470041360 · 05/08/2016 09:51

The world is unstable. This country is unstable. Who knows what it will be like . We'll just have to wait and see. People like to get all hysterical but the wheels will keep turning and you just keep living .

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 05/08/2016 09:53

What a great manifesto!

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2016 09:59

We're all in this shit storm together now - while I would think that most of the 52% voted in the knowledge there was a high likelihood of recession (short term pain, long term gain and all that shit), that still leaves 16m of the population who realised it and actively voted against the likely turmoil. I and millions of others don't deserve it, no. But then that is democracy, which is notoriously an arse. "I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it" etc. There were many things wrong with the referendum and I will continue to fight and hope against hope that we remain in the EU. But I will not wish for recession. I voted against the likely economic ruin and hope that I am proved wrong.

Fwiw though op, on an emotional level I kind of get your 'taking the ball home' attitude. It socks that we're all in this shit together and I still feel raw about it.

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2016 10:01

sucks. But yes, big old smelly festering socks too.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 05/08/2016 10:08

I don't think anyone wishes for recession - fear of it was why so many of us voted remain!

The problem is, the Leave campaign didn't say 'yes, there will be something of an economic downturn, but it will be outweighed by X Y and Z, and our plan to deal with it is A B and C'. They said 'no no no there won't be an economic downturn, that's just Project Fear ....Sovereignty, take back control, sovereignty, shutup experts....'

CorkieD · 05/08/2016 10:09

There is going to be a recession.

A lot of people are in denial. I think people should just start taking stock of their personal finances and do their best to get through it.

logosthecat · 05/08/2016 10:11

I'm afraid that we are heading for a recession. And I don't think it's true that things can't get worse for the poor, sadly. I suspect that they can and will.

I am no expert, but we do seem to be in a new economic era of basement interest rates and no growth. It seems likely that this will be the 'new normal' for the foreseeable future.

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2016 10:16

We don't disagree Seek, I was taking poetic licence with the op. I rephrase that - I don't think we deserve a recession. However I don't think Leavers have the luxury of claiming they weren't warned. They may have been lied to - repeatedly - but they chose to believe the lies and millions of others chose to listen to the reason of the experts Gove warned people about. Muppet. I mean, who would listen to Gove ffs?!

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 05/08/2016 10:18

I know, Lions, I meant that to be in agreement with you, but it does sound like I was taking issue, now I read back.... yes, we were all warned - told, even - but hey, who needs experts?

Similou89 · 05/08/2016 10:27

Did someone not have their morning cup of coffee yet :( you sound very spiteful and if that's your thoughts then I feel very sorry for you. At the end of the day what's done is done it won't be changed and as a nation we just have to soldier on and move forwards. The country will always have recessions reguardless of brexit. What's the saying..... 'When life hands you lemons.....' Maybe I just like to keep positive instead of being all doom and gloom guess it's stops me from turning into a bitter Betty ;)

Justanotherlurker · 05/08/2016 10:31

Well you are BU just for the fact that of the "stupid brits" and trying to pin it all on Brexit.

Sure, Brexit hasn't helped but we haven't really done anything since 2008 and central banks have been plate spinning since to mainly keep asset prices high. Europe are having problems that are not related to Brexit and have a knock on effect.

Its far more complex than just Brexit and "stupid brits", sure its not helped but the imposing recession is a hell of a lot more complex than that.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 05/08/2016 10:36

It's not so much that life handed us lemons as 52% of our compatriots actively bloody voted for lemons though! Because they thought that lemons were all just so much Project Fear. Or maybe that being out of the EU would mean we could have spherical lemons again. Or something Confused

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2016 10:38

Didn't mean to sound argumentative Seek. I'm just tetchy today because of the exchange rate - I need euros for my holiday next week! Still, I count myself lucky that's all I need to worry about as I'm reasonably well placed to weather the inevitable storm - unlike many others.

fakenamefornow · 05/08/2016 10:40

People were told what would happen (many said it was all lies) this is what they voted for, it's a bit rich if they start complaining. Personally I think the economy is the least of our worries in the Brexit fallout.

Castironfireplace · 05/08/2016 10:42

This is exactly what you get when you tell a bunch of people it makes them cleverer & better than all the others if they only vote one way.

Despite your attained brilliance solely achieved by ticking a certain box, you seem to have absolutely no idea how banks make money.

It's like some weird form of religion - would you like a whip to flog? Or are you going to sacrifice a small animal to appease the European gods?

Everything and it's wife is going to get blamed on brexit - I think that's a surety. And you are going to stand there proudly saying I told you so - just because of that stupid election tactic - ooh let's tell them that remaining makes you clever, and posher and.....one of us.

Quite frankly I find it disturbing. And all this leavers were lied to stuff- and you don't think remainers were? do you really think the whole debacle was that simple?

What would help is if you stopped the childish ' we deserve it and more' and actually got involved and worked towards positive solutions. But, hey your way is easier isn't it?

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2016 10:44

sure its not helped

This is the biggest understatement I have read this year. Indeed it is likely to be the final nail in the coffin for many!

Oops, there I go, spreading Project Fear.

I do wish people would stop trying to downplay the repercussions with their Daily Express-tinted glasses on.

Surferjet · 05/08/2016 10:46

I'm not complaining. Still deliriously happy we voted leave Smile
& I'm poor!

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2016 10:51

Yes Castiron - what are the brilliant solutions put forward by Leave that we should all get involved in and work towards? What is the brilliant master plan now that all the Leave campaign team have deserted their posts? The only reason Davis and Johnson have been forced to own their decisions is because a Remainer made them face up to them.

Justanotherlurker · 05/08/2016 10:59

Oops, there I go, spreading Project Fear.

Before you get on your high horse with your memes I'm a remain supporter, ignoring all the other variables and trying to pin it on just Brexit is devoid of any knowledge of how, not only the UK but Europe as a whole has been scraping the barrel since 2008.

Bogeyface · 05/08/2016 10:59

David Cameron shafted a lot of people who voted for him in the last GE. Remember that woman on Question Time (I think it was), in tears because she voted for him but didnt think that the cuts would affect her despite a large portion of her income being made up of benefits?

So when DC backed the Remain campaign, many of those people will have voted leave on the basis that when they do what DC says they should, they get fucked. You can see the logic, and the reason behind the knee-jerk "If DC says I should do A then I will do B"

Peregrina · 05/08/2016 11:25

Remember that woman on Question Time (I think it was), in tears because she voted for him but didnt think that the cuts would affect her despite a large portion of her income being made up of benefits?

I think her problem was that she didn't realise that her Tax Credits counted as Benefits. Bit like a lot of Leavers not realising how many policies they were attributing to the EU were UK govt policies.

Castironfireplace · 05/08/2016 11:25

And what was the master plan with remaining? Europe can't go on as it is, the whole project has massive problems, some say it's doomed anyway - what was your plan? Do spell it out I'm all ears.

Shall I start ringing the bells? What's first? Plague and flies?

But it's alright because you are clever for ticking the right box no? And you can say I told you so...

wasonthelist · 05/08/2016 11:33

OP you deserve a recession, the rest of us don't.
