Every time I read this I want to cry, yet I still keep going back.....anyone want to discuss?

A critic at the time described it as, "Sugar water served with humor." She was right. Sorry.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 04/08/2016 20:55

I have taught it too many damn times to have any emotional response to it whatsoever now. I can't bear to teach books I love for exams.

Amelie10 · 04/08/2016 20:56

Found this to be one of the most overrated books.

Gowgirl · 04/08/2016 20:59

Strange I still love this story, it becomes more currant every time as people are so judgy

OP posts:
Gowgirl · 04/08/2016 21:05

To me this story is about tolerance and seriously good parenting, crunches it's not about the breastfeeding more about how you explain the fucked up world you live in!

I think I'm going to start a book club......

I feel like I should have liked it more than I did.

I liked it. I cried. But I was more underwhelmed than anything else. I don't get the hype though I admit it's beautifully written.

deadringer · 04/08/2016 21:10

One of my favourite novels, i love it.

ATrumpIsAFartCalledDonald · 04/08/2016 21:14

Embarrassed to say I've never read it though it's such a popular book.

VanillaSugar · 04/08/2016 21:17

You get lots of girls called Scout, but not many boys called Jem. Discuss.

Dead ringer- do you think the ewells or the family are the important aspect?

OP posts:
VanillaSugar · 04/08/2016 21:28

Jem would be regarded as a girl's name now, sadly. I fell in love with Gregory Peck watching this film.

Gowgirl · 04/08/2016 21:29

Walter- it's the perfect saga of the one parent family, and I have to say atticus does it well!

I have never seen the film......

It's been one of my favourites since I first read it at 14 for school. I'm sentimentally attached to my old copy and proud to have it on my bookcase.

ConkerTriumphant · 04/08/2016 21:31

I wanted to name my son Atticus. DH said no. He wouldn't let me have Finch, either.
The bastard.

I read it for GCSE english, I'm too scared to read it again. I adored it and don't want to be disappointed as an adult.

Sirzy · 04/08/2016 21:41

I love it, read it more than any other book.

Gowgirl · 04/08/2016 21:48

not just me then !

I love it, I've lost count of how many times I've read it. I also couldn't wait for dd to be old enough to read it, and she loves it also.

My teacher ruined so much literature with her crapness, including a good few things that had previously been favourites of mine. I was so overjoyed when she decided not to spoil this too.

DotForShort · 04/08/2016 22:29

I must have read it a dozen times as a kid. Absolutely loved it. As a novel it's far from perfect, but it has a lot to say about issues of race, class, gender roles. It brilliantly evokes a particular time and place. The main characters are well drawn, complex, compelling. We even get to see a fictional version of Truman Capote as a child. Smile And parts of the book are very funny.

SalemSaberhagen · 04/08/2016 22:31

Oh I love this book, I have read it so many times. Really recommend the film too, Gregory Peck is a marvellous Atticus.

Scout's two word utterance at the end when they are in the bedroom makes me cry and cry.
