Me or Dh regarding chip pan (lighthearted -ish)

So we have just had a beautiful kitchen fitted, it's still all clean and sparkly. I've never had a new kitchen. I've just put up lovely white curtains and the whole place is fresh.

Dh has just come home with a a large bottle of oil and a bag of spuds and decided that he is going to make 'home made chips'

Apparently he is ill and he needs stodge. I said I would go chippy for him, but they need to be 'home made chips'

I said no fucking chance no, it will put fat all over new cooker, make kitchen and whole house stink, make new curtains stink of fat. It's a waste of all that oil as it won't get used again (or he will try and cook every thing that he can find in it all week) he don't clean the pan out after it.

He doesn't fancy anything else so Is starving it out while I feel bad about getting my cake out of the fridge.

I most likely won't get my foot rub now

How dare he stink my new kitchen out!

Aren't chip pans a massive fire risk? I've only ever used a deep fryer, but those pans you use on the stove terrify me.

pearlylum · 03/08/2016 21:16

I;m with your OH.
I don't deep fry a lot, but some things have to be- onion bahji, calamari, chips, tempura.
I have an extractor fan so no smell. I use high sided big pot to deep fry, so no splatter. No smell either.

Sorty posted twice.

Are these deep fat fryers any good? I like to watch my cooking, turn it a lot, especially when frying at high temperatures. How does that work if you have to keep the lid closed.

Dutchcourage · 03/08/2016 21:19

zippy we havnt even got a chip pan it was just a normal pan he was about to ruin Shock

And yes they are a massive fire risk - that's why I don't own one.

I didn't think anyone owned a chip pan these days. I deep fry in a normal pan. How does that ruin the pan?Mine comes out perfectly clean.
They are not a fire risk if you are sensible, don't overfill, supervise etc.

NeedACleverNN · 03/08/2016 21:25

We have a deep fat fryer that doesn't have a lid

So you can watch it like normal

LTB!

tibbawyrots · 03/08/2016 21:57

Was he planning a chip butty with bread that you slice and real butter and Heinz ketchup?

Maybe with a fried egg in it?

Why am I hearing these questions in Stewie from Family Guy's sarky tone?

Wink

Eww no I'm with you OP It'll stink and splatter. Though I do love a homefried chip it will not be my home! Gone are the days of chip pans I think, since the (extremely inferior) oven chip came along. Mum used to have a chip pan, basket and bottle of oil she'd carefully return the cool oil to. Grandma used to use lard and hers were even scrummier. Unless however you're an OCD cleaner I can see how kitchens ended up looking like the Royle family's!

tibbawyrots · 03/08/2016 22:01

I want a chip butty now...!

tibbawyrots · 03/08/2016 22:02

But not made with lard fried chips

AnnieOnnieMouse · 03/08/2016 22:05

I'm with you.
No ordinary chip pan in my kitchen ever - too great a fire risk.
I had a friend - so neat, organised, efficient - had a chip pan fire, nearly lost the house. I went home and binned my chip pan.
He can have oven chips or chippy chips and lump it, especially if you're the one who would have been cleaning up afterwards.
A few days ago my DH - yes, I'm looking at you, cos you've twigged my NN - fried himself an egg, and left the gas on under the pan, very low - discovered it the next DAY!

Dutchcourage · 03/08/2016 22:05

tib it's was white read, real butter but was going to be with beans.

thisis even he is not arsed now. I've just shared my cake and my kitchen is still fresh ☺️

Omg lard chips theflying yum! When it sets white around the basket when cooled !

My oil filled electric deep fat fryer would sit on the hob under the extraction fan but I would never put a chip pan under the fan, it helped a bit re the smell. I want an airfryer as I someone turned on the wrong hob and melted the fryer.

BertieBotts · 03/08/2016 22:26

I won't let DH get a deep fat fryer until such time as we have a garage or other place he can use it which isn't in the house Blush

I hate them, the stink is awful and the layer of sticky grease over everything makes me boak.

AliceInUnderpants · 03/08/2016 22:42

Ugh, I feel your pain. We used to own a deep fat fryer, when ex lived with us. Seven years ago I threw it out when we moved, and have never looked back!

tibbawyrots · 03/08/2016 22:46

beans and chips? Has he just landed from the planet Zog?

😬

I like chips. I like beans. Not on the same plate!

BertrandRussell · 03/08/2016 22:51

I have a deep fat fryer. Tonight I used it to make tempura. It was amazing! Prawn, broccoli, asparagus, mushrooms, baby corn, spring onions, red peppers, mange tout............ Can't wait to do it again.

madgingermunchkin · 03/08/2016 23:51

OMG you put the beans on the chips. Yummy yummy.
