I live in a surburban semi, pretty average.

Next door neighbours have a brand new Range Rover and a year old BMW Big massive thing.

I feel it's a bit much for this road. We are more of a Vauxhall Astra / VW Golf type of road.

We have two brand new very expensive 'WAG' type cars that are paid for by work, people probably think we're idiots as we're renting, either blowing all our money on cars or crooks of some kind

Headofthehive55 · 03/08/2016 22:08

Not really that interested in the car I drive...but very interested in the particular spot on the driveway. No I can't rest with it in a different place..I would quite like to make everyone get up and rearrange but they would think I was quite mad, wouldn't they?

That is the mark of a true mumsnetter.

Scuttle22 · 03/08/2016 22:11

I was just thinking this today OPGrin. It is one of my major bugbears to see a car that is worth a quarter of the house's value if × 2 Landrover that's half. It makes me itch and twitch every time I see such fuckery.

Right will now settle into thread with Wine and chip in later.

Littlegreyauditor · 03/08/2016 22:28

We both drive practical, boring, in no way expensive cars which are completely outclassed by most of our friends and relatives. Our house is kind of lovely though, and our neighbour doesn't feel we lower the tone as he is usually found cruising around in an elderly Massey Ferguson. Our neighbours on the other side are Clydesdale broodmares. I don't think they drive.

I appreciate a nice car, far more than DH does; his car is a mobile skip, but my dream car is a Mitsubushi Barbarian or a Landrover Defender. Something I can let kids, dogs and hay in without feeling huge guilt about the destruction of a lovely car though throughotherness. I'm kind of open mouthed at the idea of spending 70K on a car and letting my lot loose on it. I reckon it would last a week before being worth feck all Hmm

maldini · 03/08/2016 22:38

Scuttle, ours are about 50% value of the house, our neighbours probably see us the same as you would think, especially as we are young, which is fun.

maldini · 03/08/2016 22:39

Missed off the emoji, was meant to be a Wink at the end and wasn't meant to seem pissy!

SabineUndine · 03/08/2016 22:42

I think you've got too much time on your hands.

Butteredparsnips · 03/08/2016 22:53

Nice House shame about (my) car. Why would I need anything flash to leave at the train station?

SpringerS · 03/08/2016 23:06

My car is is a metallic greenish colour so it matches quite well with the lawn and trees. My husband's car is a metallic blueish and it matches with neither the house nor the garden. :(

Purplehonesty · 03/08/2016 23:15

I do find it funny when you drive down a rough council estate Road and see bmws, Mercs and more parked up.

I'd much rather spend my money on soemthing which can go up in value and be left to the kids which is why we have a lovely house and two
Fords!

Togaparties · 03/08/2016 23:27

We live in a naice cul de sac populated with Volkswagen Audi Group cars

You realise that VAG stands for Volkswagon AG?

Togaparties · 03/08/2016 23:28

Or Volkswagen AG even! Bloody autocorrect!

AmeliasMumBucks · 03/08/2016 23:32

Different horses for different courses.. I live in my house and therefore care about it servicing my life, I get in my car twice a week when I can't be bothered to walk to the shops or get the tube. Couldn't care less what it looks like if it gets me from a to b safely x

GiddyOnZackHunt · 03/08/2016 23:58

Yes I do, thanks for asking. But common parlance and all that...
Hmm

maninawomansworld01 · 04/08/2016 00:04

I think a lot of them are on finance or company cars.
A friend of mine always has the latest car (his last couple have been top of the range audis). He basically put down a 10k deposit on the first one then pays £500 or so a month for two or three years, at the end he gives the old car back and has another brand new one.

He's currently driving around in an 80k car and only had to fork out about £12k upfront before driving it away.

I, by contrast, just bought a 3 year old Range Rover for £45k with all the toys and only 16k miles on the clock. It's been dealer serviced and is in fantastic nick (for now - until I've had it a few years on the farm / shoot).

I'm driving a £100k car but paid way less than half that (and it was a serious treat to myself).

trixymalixy · 04/08/2016 00:12

One of my neighbours has a bright orange Aston Martin. He had a white one before that. The house he lives in is very average and he gets in a shitty white van to go to work.

We presume he owns the business, but the car, house and van just don't go together do have sparked our curiosity.

19lottie82 · 04/08/2016 00:16

ohthatthingagain........ I'd say the majority of people's houses are worth six figures?

shadowfax07 · 04/08/2016 00:19

My car is the one that lets the street (or possibly the entire estate) down. It's an 03 plate Seat Leon TD, that has never let me down. It's also worth naff all, so I'm running it into the ground. Shadowdog also travels in it, so if we go any where with him, it's in my car.

DP's car is a 14 plate Ford Focus ST, which is a lot of fun to drive. :-D

NewBallsPlease00 · 04/08/2016 00:32

Ahh I get plenty of judgy looks- people assume I'm a sahm in a scruffy house, with a blingy car. It's a company car because I actually have a good job and the house being scruffy, meh work in progress

queenoftheboys · 04/08/2016 01:15

I think you've got too much time on your hands

I think you're missing the point of MN

Which, for the record, is to while away a few idle hours minutes chatting about random irrelevancies.

Upthetree100 · 04/08/2016 01:22

mouthfulofquiz I wanna be like you Grin saving up to buy a nice house. Drive a shit car. No shame in it sorry, I think it's a sensible approach.

Upthetree100 · 04/08/2016 01:27

Sorry I've changed my mind limitedperiodonly I want to be you. Lol.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/08/2016 01:29

So technically as some of you will know, we're homeless. But we have a kick ass car. Grin Much better than the 15 year old Lexus we left in London. We Buy Any Car dot Com gave us a whole £385 for it. Grin

In other news, my cousin has an extremely average house in an extremely average part of West Sussex, with lodgers. Parked outside is his £180000 Aston Martin.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/08/2016 01:32

Upthetree aspiring to being like limited is not a bad thing, she's awesome Grin
