cars that don't match houses

I live in a surburban semi, pretty average.

Next door neighbours have a brand new Range Rover and a year old BMW Big massive thing.

I feel it's a bit much for this road. We are more of a Vauxhall Astra / VW Golf type of road.

AIBU?

We have a knackered van on a nice street. When we moved in they thought we were the "staff" and when my sister came over in her nice car they asked her how she was settling in ha ha.

FankEweVeryMuch · 04/08/2016 23:33

I want a nice car!

This car has made me realise that we must have one of the shittest cars on the street.

It's a very modest street car wise, one Audi Q7 and one big Land Rover but otherwise a sea of Fords, VW, citerons, nissans etc.

Shizzlestix · 04/08/2016 23:45

DH's car is 14 years old. We have too many dogs and a horse. I think the local valet service would refuse to touch the cars we own, they're disgraceful inside. If someone needs a lift, I'm somewhat horrified, but I'm sure they'd rather ride than walk. I seriously don't care what the neighbours think, they have had the same cars since moving in however long ago. It's transport.

I do wonder why some friends had a somewhat knee jerk reaction to having children and promptly bought Discos. They live in the middle of a city. Confused

bubbly1978 · 05/08/2016 15:49

Cars are bits of bent metal, no more. The important thing is whether they work reliably. Attributing them importance is playing into the hands of those marketing them, who want people to buy every year.

Lweji · 05/08/2016 15:53

You speak the truth. It's the engine, stupid.

Cubtrouble · 05/08/2016 15:57

Are you jealous OP?

icelollycraving · 05/08/2016 16:13

We used to have Porsche, had bmws etc & lived in my flat in a shit bit of se London. It was my flat,dh had the cars.
I miss the cars but I like our house more.

Sara107 · 05/08/2016 18:30

I live in a small old council estate of which about half the houses are now privately owned. The housing association properties were recently re-roofed, so all of a sudden you can see who owns and who doesn't. One of the housing association properties has two range rovers. Who knows really what people's circumstances are, and what their spending priorities are. Cars can be company cars or leased, or perhaps people simply like them and choose to spend a large chunk of their income on their car rather than anything else.

dangerrabbit · 06/08/2016 08:54

I live in an average house in a fairly central (and therefore overpriced) bit of london and drive a reliable but shitty car which I need for work (not company car). I'm not a fan of investing in something which is going to depreciate but am very attached to my shit car. Just worked out my car is worth 0.001% of the value of my house.

stopgap · 06/08/2016 09:15

Car obsessiveness is such an English thing. I'm back home in England this week (live in America) and guaranteed a house worth about 400-500k will have a BMW, Audi etc parked outside, but no way would the $600-700k American equivalent. It'd be much more likely to have an older car, or a sensible Acura or Subaru Outback.

ChippyMinton · 06/08/2016 09:52

I often park my old banger next to a flashy car in the work car park. Imagine my Shock when one of the apprentices got out of it. Mind you his face was a picture too Grin

Upthetree100 · 06/08/2016 12:10

danger that means if your car is worth £500 you live in a £50M house. You're welcome DM GrinGrin

Lweji · 06/08/2016 12:38

Maybe the car is only worth £5.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 06/08/2016 13:10

Either someone is massively overvaluing their house or massively undervaluing their car or doesn't understand decimal points.

Upthetree100 · 06/08/2016 13:17

Lweji true maybe they drive around in a flinstone type car powered by human legs

Or it could be that they live in an average house somewhere in Westminister, who knows?

Upthetree100 · 06/08/2016 13:20

(Starts wondering how the chauffeur feels about driving a £500 car)

FoggyBottom · 06/08/2016 13:23

Do people seriously look at cars and make a judgement of their owners?

I own 2 houses, both listed, in very nice areas of lovely towns. I don't own a car. Never have, never will.

Judge away! This thread is bonkers.

Anonymouses · 06/08/2016 13:33

Our road is full of less than 5 year old family cars and SUVs. Except my block
Of houses. We are home to a sporty bmw, an Aston Martin and a 10 Year old knackered old ford... Guess which is mine Grin

Anonymouses · 06/08/2016 13:38

The Aston Martin guy owns a garage and the car is co-owned so he technically owns half an Aston Martin. The bmw is a guy who has no need of a family hatchback.

I'm not sure how he feels about them atm though as the l plates for his teenage daughter appeared the other week on the passenger seat. Three days later there is a large dent in his car and his garage door is bent to fuck...

My other neighbour came home in a nascar type effort with full on racing decal the other day. He works for a different garage.

I love that we don't conform and are all together in one block that sticks out a mile Grin

NewgatesKnockers · 06/08/2016 13:39

Our neighbors probably think that about DH and me. We both drive luxury cars, and live in a fairly typical suburban neighborhood in the US. Thing is though, we've been in our house a lot longer than most, and our youngest DC is 16. Most people here are quite a bit younger, with small children.

It's cheap living though, and I'm counting down the days until we can downsize, and move somewhere a little less dull.

purpleapple1234 · 06/08/2016 13:44

Half agree with the OP. But is only because I can't stand drivers of audis, SUVS, etc. Or maybe it is just where I live that owners of these cars are particularly objectionable in their attitude towards other drivers been on the receiving end of some arsehole driving from a couple of such specimens today, which adds to the memory bank The thought of living in a street of them makes me shudder, bad enough having to work in such an area.

We live in a well-to-do area, but not outlandishly expensive, with a slight bohemian edge, so cars do reflect the street well. Mostly mazdas (Australia!)and volkswagens, with the odd mini and vintage car thrown in.

wendywindblows · 10/08/2016 11:17

I really can understand this, my neighbours have parking on the front of their semi for 2 cars, but unfortunately own 5 vehicles. A huge white van which they park on the road at side of my drive every evening and all weekend, which makes it very difficult for me to reverse my car out of my drive. 2 of their cars are parked in their front garden (they have no driveway) the other 2 are either in front of my house the other side of my drive or across the road opposite my drive, which again makes it difficult for me when reversing my car out of my driveway.
I don't understand why they brought/stay in this property with so many vehicles.

OutOfAces · 10/08/2016 11:22

We have a neighbour who buys a new flash car every couple of years. Every time they buy a new car they repaint the garage door the exact same colour as the car.
From the title, I totally expected the OP of this thread to be that neighbour!
