To find August a really weird month

The weather is not great and there's already an Autumny feel in the air - nights are drawing in quite noticeably. Everywhere's looking a bit tired and end of summer-ish instead of fresh and green like earlier in the year. Lots of people are away and everything seems quiet, there's a definite lack of routine due to the kids being off school even for those who are still working. The shops are full of end of sales tat or new season stuff that nobody's ready for yet. And to top it all I've just seen conkers on the trees in the park.

I really want to enjoy summer while it's still officially here but I always find August such a funny in between sort of month. I'd it just me?

We found a conker case at the park today. It's 27 degrees here and my first day off with DS this summer! I feel I've missed out!

Funnily enough I was talking with a friend about this today. She was saying once you hit August it starts to feel like you are downhill to the end of the year, the best of summer is past and it's not really autumnal - mists and mellow fruitfulness. I can't quite put into words what August is but every year I always feel a little unsettled, odd I know!

It is funny - I as thinking exactly the same. It is summer. It is school holidays. But unless you go abroad for some proper summer weather. summer will just pass you by in the UK.

I find it even stranger, as I'm Australian, we have summer holidays over Christmas. Everyone winds down for the festive season, there's load of parties, the weather is good, the bbq's are never ending and everyone jumps in the car and heads to the beach for a few weeks.... that to me is summer...

Does anyone else ever feel like they spend the whole Summer kind of waiting for Summer to come? Except it never does.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 05/08/2016 00:21

Err...there was a heatwave about 3ish weeks ago! I'd say that was summery enough.

I'm enjoying the warmer days and lighter nights before it's winter again and freezing!!

Yeah :( I know Dahn Sarf had some proper summer this year, but here in the Midlands we only had two properly hot & sunny days. We seem to have segued straight from spring to autumn. The leaves started falling two weeks ago and I'm wearing socks in bed!

To me, this presages a very cold winter. Last winter was very forgiving (here, anyway) and I feel we may pay for it now!

On the upside (sort of) I only had to de-fuzz my legs once!
Downside is, I've been wearing my furry boots most of the 'summer' and am worried they might not last through winter.

I work in a university and in August nothing happens.

I have spent all week at my desk twiddling my thumbs and its dragged so badly.

There's no students, the sandwich shops are all shut and it all feels so slow.

heron aren't you meant to be doing research or something? :D

Savagebeauty · 05/08/2016 11:04

I have 8 weeks off in the summer and always feel in limbo in August.
I was trying on autumn stock yesterday and have been looking at boots Grin
