The media coverage of winning the world cup in the 60's is ridiculous. Radio phone-ins, interviews with people who watched it, books written, news coverage.

If anything it should be embarassing that England hasn't won anything for 50 years.

I know I am b abit u and I don't know why it irks me so much.

I love reading this thread am just trying to imagine the celebrations in 2066Grin.

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 14:29

My sister's wedding was on FA cup final day when it was a London derby between Spurs and Queens Park Rangers Roussette. Not anyone's teams, but some people discreetly checked.

If it had been West Ham v Charlton there would have been more empty chairs.

PacificDogwod · 30/07/2016 14:33

I find it utterly baffling Grin a. I don't give a hoot about football, b. I'm German, c. it was sooooooo long ago and d. a surprising number of people think I should care deeply because: see b. AND I am 50, as if this defeat of 'my team' in the year of my birth is somehow more horribly troubling to me Grin

You enjoy, Engerland!

Pacific, i have learned the years of the German worldcup victories (1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014) whenever someone brings up 1966 I just recite them with a smile. Works.Every.Time.

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 14:50

But it isn't a glorious defeat, limited, it's just embarrassing. Really, really embarrassing.

You might be taking me too seriously EdmundCleverClogs. I don't find England's utter failure at football since 1966, apart from the false dawns in Italia 90 and when England hosted the European Championships in 1996, to be much to cheer about. But neither do I despair because my self esteem doesn't revolve around the performance of the England team. And I thank the Lord for that, thought we did get a couple of good pop songs out of it, a category in which England still proudly lead the world, along with binge drinking and teenage pregnancy.

However, I'm being entirely serious in my view that pretending that abject failure is not part of a nation's history because it's embarrassing is worrying.

This becomes more serious when considering serious misdeeds rather than being crap at football or Eurovision. I'm not saying for one moment that Britain has a stellar history when it comes to covering things up, but the general trend of ignoring things because they are embarrassing is not good wherever you are from.

I also think the glorious defeat of Dunkirk is something to be proud of because it fed national pride, which was a serious thing in 1940. Plus, without those little boats, my dad would probably have been killed and I wouldn't be here. So that's good.

Anyway, back to being silly...

ivykaty44 · 30/07/2016 14:53

We have won sporting world titles - just not in football

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 15:01

Now who's taking it seriously stole? If you said that to me, I'd agree that Germany is very good at football and much better than England. I'd talk to you about players I admire from Germany, England and other nationalities. Have you looked them up too?

I wanted Germany to beat France in the semi finals earlier this month and go on to win the tournament because I admired them. But they didn't. I wasn't that fussed about the final and it was dull.

Roussette · 30/07/2016 15:04

I would love to know what other countries (who have done well in WC's) think of us and our digging up 1966 on a regular basis! They must think we're bonkers!

derxa · 30/07/2016 15:06

I always think this is trying to link subconsciously with 1966 as well as the BOH.

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/07/2016 15:09

Yes living, but there's a big difference between having pride in brave men who defended our country and stopped a megalomaniac all those years ago, and the arrogance that English football fans have due to a misplaced sense of pride over their football team. It's like the English believe the rest of the world should be in awe of that single achievement so many years ago, and base that on every win and loss in any other tournament they enter. Unlike other teams/fans who treat every World Cup as something that should be worked for, not expected as 'this should finally be our turn again'. The win of '66 should stay in '66 - fondly remembered, but nothing more.

HoratioNightboy · 30/07/2016 15:20

Fuck's sake, England, it's the 21st century! Can't believe one poster referencing Dunkirk - live in the now!

If this is symptomatic of post-Brxit "Britain", i.e. reliving so-called glories that are so far in the past then thank christ in Scotland we at least have a get-out option.

No, OP, YADNBU!

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 15:20

It's like the English believe the rest of the world should be in awe of that single achievement so many years ago, and base that on every win and loss in any other tournament they enter.

I do not recognise this at all in any of my friends and acquaintances or in wider football commentary. England fans are depressingly aware of our chances and swing between anger at real, not imagined, underachievement, and amused resignation.

Where do you get your view from that England expects to win the tournament rather than getting out of the group? With the talent and size of the nation, the quarter finals should be a definite and the semi finals ought to be achievable. That is not an arrogant expectation on behalf of supporters. It's a failure of players and management.

someonestolemynick · 30/07/2016 15:22

I'm not taking it very seriously. The 1966 won gets normally brought out by arsehole when they learn I'm German. Seriously, it only happened a few times in my 10 years in England but I take pleasure in winning a gloat-off.Blush

PuppyMonkey · 30/07/2016 15:25

It's all very embarrassing imho. Commemorating a sodding football match is bad enough but drawing attention to how long it's been since this one great victory took place is an utter joke. Grin

I was born in 1966 btw.

Roussette · 30/07/2016 15:29

Yes, there is a failure there and maybe that's why I lose patience with all of this.

We have the highest paid players, most successful premier league etc and yet can't win against a tiddly country with no money spent on football (Euros). The question is why? I honestly think we shouldn't even enter the next WC unless this can be addressed. I don't think there is a hunger there. And there were no repurcussions to playing badly... Wayne Rooney just goes back to his £300,000 a week, and life carries on.

JCDenton · 30/07/2016 15:30

Just let people enjoy talking about something they like remembering ffs. It seems to be a growing trend to get annoyed by people who like things you don't like.

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/07/2016 15:33

With the talent and size of the nation, the quarter finals should be a definite and the semi finals ought to be achievable. That is not an arrogant expectation on behalf of supporters.

But it is arrogance! Hasn't it not just been proven in the Euros, it's not the size of the country or having 11 mega stars on the pitch that always matters? English fans need to stop 'expecting' a win and focus on every game as being important, like other teams do. Spain forgot this after their last big win, and paid for it. Expectation leads to arrogance, leads to failure. Leads to a bloody stupid 'cerebration' of mediocrity, 50 years later.

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 15:38

Then I commiserate with you on your English acquaintances someonestolemynick. I've met some Germans that I didn't warm to either. Unpleasant people exist the world over, as I'm sure you know. But they are outnumbered by nice people, as I'm sure you also realise.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/07/2016 15:46

English footballers aren't trained or coached well enough by men skilled in international football.

In this country, from a young age boys are told they are the cream of the crop and lucky to be in academies etc. Parents believe it, the boy believes it and they are educated in the 'academy way'.

They are mollycoddled, cared for and at domestic level play very well for their clubs who pay huge salaries

. I don't think individuals care about playing for the Engkand when they are so well rewarded at club level.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/07/2016 15:47

*England.

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 15:52

But it isn't arrogance. It is a reasonable expectation given that most of the team members perform at least adequately for their clubs in the Premiership, the most competitive league in the world, and some of them play equally well for top clubs abroad.

I don't know where you get the impression that England fans don't think that their team should focus on every game as important. They do.
It's just that the message isn't getting through to the players and doesn't look like it will in the foreseeable future.

As an England supporter this is not my view that we should rule the world at football, nor of countless others. It seems to exist only in the minds of people who have an uninformed and unshakable view of what the average English supporter expects from their team.

Either they are supporters of other nations or not supporters at all.

We expect them to perform to the best of their abilities. And they don't. What's arrogant about that?

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 16:05

makes mental note to check footie fixtures of any kind should any of the DCs decide to get married

You have to be more dedicated than that Roussette. My friend had advance tickets for Ghostbusters on the day of the men's Wimbledon final.

I'd accepted before I realised that Andy Murray would be playing so, in the spirit of Mumsnet, I honoured that agreement. I set the Sky+ and the film started just as the match did.

We both agreed that the film wasn't very good and I wanted to go home. But it was sunny and she wanted to sit at a pavement cafe so I agreed and hoped no one would reveal the score while wondering if it was going to be a five-setter.

Eventually I left. I got the bus which was luckily full of foreign tourists who'd probably not watched it. I stared at the floor in case I saw happy or sad people draped in Scottish flags out of the window.

I ran in and turned the recording on. Andy, of course won. It wasn't an epic, but I was pleased for him.

derxa · 30/07/2016 16:09

limited Your message hasn't got through to the pundits and media. I watched all the Euro matches and no matter what match it was they were droning on about England even after they were knocked out. Joe hart let in an easy goal against Iceland and someone said, 'Do you think hart should play in the quarter final?'

Roussette · 30/07/2016 16:10

I agree with that limited. I feel sorry for true football fans, their hopes are dashed again and again because for some reason the players under perform every time it matters at european and world levels. I just can't work out why... I can only presume it's because the players are obscenely rich, arrogant, not patriotic, there is no hunger or passion, and they are just not excited about international football.

I don't understand why we act all surprised when we get knocked out because it happens every time and if we do get anywhere in any tournament it's usually against a small insignificant country. And we couldn't even do that in the Euros!

Oh well...

My DH would have an opinion on all of this but daren't ask him or he will be talking football all evening! Grin
