The media coverage of winning the world cup in the 60's is ridiculous. Radio phone-ins, interviews with people who watched it, books written, news coverage.

If anything it should be embarassing that England hasn't won anything for 50 years.

I know I am b abit u and I don't know why it irks me so much.

Also all of the fuss about Bobby Moore is ridiculous. He didn't score the winning goals

It wasn't his job to score goals. He was a defender. It was his job to stop other people scoring goals. but maybe you know better.

limitedperiod I would if I could! There's no getting away from it. Turned on Breakfast news this morning, two old geezers there showing their match tickets, the whole chat lasted about 20 minutes. Got in car, Radio 2 blathering on about the minute by minute concert to commemorate the win and how to get tickets. It's endless!

We ought to be analysing why the national team are so crap at football now, not going on about some match fro 50 years ago!

And if I hear "they think it's all over... it is now" one more time I might scream Grin

I find it embarrassing..it's basically counting how many years they HAVEN'T won Grin...somebody quite dim must be promoting this 50 year celebration crap.

But we are rousette. Lots of people, both professionals and fans have. I was listening to Danny Baker and Terry Butcher talking about the current England set up this morning and making very intelligent points - points that lots of other people make. But if you want to avoid it, you can. I have Bargain Hunt on at the moment. It is a football-free zone at the moment, but I'll let you know if either team picks up a vintage World Cup Willie.

Danny Baker also said that the England team should have been made to pull the Wales bus through the streets of Cardiff while being pelted with rotten vegetables just to show them what teamwork can do.

I don't think he was joking.

We give knighthoods and damehoods and other awards to other people who have made great achievements in sport. Winning the World Cup is quite a big deal.

First of all, I don't believe the team were that great (though it was a great achievement at the time). Winning the World Cup was a big deal, as were many other things that happened decades ago - the 'moment' has long passed. I believe knighthoods should be saved for those who made continuous achievements in their field, not a fluke 50 years passed.

limited oh yes to Danny's suggestion! And you're right in lots of what you say, I'm sure there are post mortems going on as to why we played so disastrously. It's just that it's like groundhog day because we always seem to do badly and then bang on about why. I betcha there'll be a world cup willie on Bargain hunt!

As you can probably tell, I'm a rugby fan and not a footie fan ... it's the whole rugby winning ethos, camaraderie, and respect for each other and match officials that does it for me that seems to be lacking in the game of football. And the fan base for rugby is so great, we all get each others passion whatever side you are on. Smile

Remember watching it at the time and thinking it wasn't out of the ordinary for a player to score three goals! Shock Also two brothers, has that happened again? Major memory is of being fascinated by Nobby Stiles' and Bobby Charlton's comb-overs flying in the windGrin

And I think the embarrassment happened in 1970 when the country was expecting a repeat performance. 'Back Home' was constantly on top of the pops.

I've just heard the prattle on Radio 2 as well. Someome phoned in to say that they got married on this day 50 years ago, and the bloke who was on was genuinely gobsmacked 'why weren't you watching the football?!' Well maybe because the wedding was booked before way England reached the final, and obviously they should have cancelled it to celebrate such a glorious occasion.

I'd be interested to see what Piers Morgan thinks of this, he had such a chip on his shoulder about Wales having that big Welcome Home parade because it 'celebrated failiure'. Well IMO failing to win anythingelse in your national game for half a century is an epic bloody Failiure! Celebrating it is even worse.

Urghhhhhhh can't stand Piers!!! Why shouldn't they celebrate seeing they'd been down to end up bottom of the group!!

Guess makes sense being the anniversary but gone a bit ott especially as that's it.we haven't done anything since and look so unlikely to do so. Im a football fan but find it so hard to get excited about England when they play never mind past past past events..guess people differ and all though

It's harmless and obviously revives a lot of memories for a lot of people of what they were doing at this time. I appreciate that a lot of MN were not born 50 years ago

For the record DP was on his way in an army lorry to ATC summer camp and I was playing on the beach on the Kent coast. My DF said that apparently he was the only male over 5 years old on the beach that day :)

I don't mind. It's quite sweet. The English do like to go on about it a heck of a lot but look on the bright side, at least when they're busy reminiscing about the 1966 win it means they can't also be going on (and on, and on, and on, and on.......) about Diego Maradona's Hand of God. Wink

Every time it comes on the radio or tv there is a race to see who can shout our catchphrase first.

The horse is dead, stop flogging it. Grin

Which then sometime segues into the dead parrot sketch.

why are you 'ragey' (is that even a word) ? Hmm
just ignore, ignore, ignore
there are lots of things on TV that mildly irritate me but I switch off and certainly don't get in a lather about it.
That said - nothing wrong with looking at documentaries/ memories about times past - early Wimbledon tennis finals, early olympic triumphs
If all we had to look at is the current sporting stuff and big brother or the X factor I would definately switch to something else

I think most England football fans know when their team has underachieved and can congratulate their opponents' successes roussette.

And many people who follow football also like other sports. I'm sure that even if you're not fussed about football, you probably like other sports besides rugby, and other teams outside your own national side.

I don't think most sensible people take Piers Morgan's pronouncements on anything seriously, so I don't understand why he's being quoted on this thread as a representative of collective English thought. Or any thought at all.

To me, the 1966 commemorations are as much about a moment in time and place. There will be more about fashion, music and social trends than on football because unless you are a serious athlete, endless footage of your own and opponents' performance is very dull.

That probably answers Runny's observation that the R2 presenter asked the caller who married on World Cup final day what happened. It's called presenting a programme.

By the by, Bobby Moore's daughter unveiled an English Heritage Blue Plaque at his childhood house in Barking, Essex, this week. His first wife, Tina, has collaborated on several books and a TV drama due out soon about their lives together. I've seen it. It's a very sympathetic portrayal. Sadly, marriages end. But if his wife and daughter have come to terms with it, I think the rest of us can let it go.

It's possible to avoid the 1966 commemorations if you want - it's summer, the evenings are light and warm, go out. Play sport.

I wouldn't mind if it was a one off because it's 50 years (well I do mind really, but you know what I mean..) BUT we hear about 1966 all the time! Every World Cup, every Euros, it seems like incessant! And god Maradona's hand of God... oh please.... don't!

Hey everyone, break out the bunting, we are so spectacularly shit at football that we havent won in half a century. Let's wave flags and draw attention to how crap we are and that our lastest decent lot was 50 years ago
This made me laugh out loud whilst drinking my cuppa tea Grin

Anyone who's a football fan during any WC, well... I take my hat off to you. We barely qualify most of the time and if we do we're either knocked out early on plus all the tears, tantrums and vilification by the press! I'm not actually sure why we enter in the first place, after 50 years of trying I think I'd give up Grin

If England was playing in a World Cup Final - I can dream - on my wedding day, I'd want to watch it. These days I could set up a big screen for everyone but 50 years ago we'd all be huddled round transistors.

When England lost - on penalties to Germany - we'd dry our eyes and have a few drinks. It would make my day. Especially if England won Grin.

limited I had to pick my wedding date to fit into the football season because he's a fan and I'd never have forgiven my DH if him and all the guests buggered off to watch TV!

Especially if England won But they never do, that's the whole point!

But it's an English, even British trait to celebrate glorious defeat. Look at Dunkirk. I think it's more sinister to expunge these things from the record.

But it isn't a glorious defeat, limited, it's just embarrassing. Really, really embarrassing.
