I think most England football fans know when their team has underachieved and can congratulate their opponents' successes roussette.
And many people who follow football also like other sports. I'm sure that even if you're not fussed about football, you probably like other sports besides rugby, and other teams outside your own national side.
I don't think most sensible people take Piers Morgan's pronouncements on anything seriously, so I don't understand why he's being quoted on this thread as a representative of collective English thought. Or any thought at all.
To me, the 1966 commemorations are as much about a moment in time and place. There will be more about fashion, music and social trends than on football because unless you are a serious athlete, endless footage of your own and opponents' performance is very dull.
That probably answers Runny's observation that the R2 presenter asked the caller who married on World Cup final day what happened. It's called presenting a programme.
By the by, Bobby Moore's daughter unveiled an English Heritage Blue Plaque at his childhood house in Barking, Essex, this week. His first wife, Tina, has collaborated on several books and a TV drama due out soon about their lives together. I've seen it. It's a very sympathetic portrayal. Sadly, marriages end. But if his wife and daughter have come to terms with it, I think the rest of us can let it go.
It's possible to avoid the 1966 commemorations if you want - it's summer, the evenings are light and warm, go out. Play sport.
