Dog owners put them on a lead!!!

I am a runner, Im so tired of people's dogs running and jumping on me while i'm on a run. Its always dog owners with the larger dogs, if you have a dog that is excitable and is known to chase jump and be a general nuisance to others trying to enjoy the park please put it on a lead.

I suffer severe allergies and today a dog jumped on me while i'm out running and scratched my leg. I have now got a 4 inch scratch which could scar from the knee down. The lazy owner had the dog off a lead and was very overweight so could not keep up with the dog running off ahead.

She then had the nerve to tell me i was out of order for kicking the dog off me.

Please Dog Owners put your dog on a lead.

Wow, Ghana, are you a troll? how are you conflating anything NAvy has said with blaming babies for being mauled by dogs. What a treat you are.

Having gone back to reread the OP's thread I still think I read it mainly as an 'I hate dogs and don't want them near me when I'm out running' and it would be less natural I think to kick a dog off you than to turn your shoulder to barge them away, and I can't see how kicking would be easier. I would never say that dogs without good recall should be allowed to be off lead or jump up on anyone, but the amount of dog-hate on this thread has been appalling. She said any energetic and boisterous dog should be on a lead. Energetic and boisterous dogs are the ones most in need of running free off lead! And I do not believe that the majority of dogs off lead would run 'at' someone and jump at them. The OP has clearly lumped all dogs together and has an ingrained hatred of dogs that I find very sad.

I'm a mother of a toddler AND a 35kg dog and I love them both more than I could properly explain. My dog is a member of our family, my DD loves her so much, and makes our lives fuller for being there. I actually feel a little sad for people who hate animals (dogs or otherwise).

Cats are bastards.

TortoiseVTurtle · 28/07/2016 22:09

Disclaimer- I love cats too.

Yes Navy that dog is devoted to her and is her lifeline, for lots of others too I am sure.

Lweji · 28/07/2016 22:11

I like dogs. I like meeting dogs on the street. It's fine. I'm fine approaching them, even petting strange dogs. I play with any friendly dogs.

I have very low tolerance levels for out of control dogs, though.

It's not hard to distinguish between the two things.

CrownofStars · 28/07/2016 22:16

What I still don't understand is why joggers can't slow down or walk when passing people with dogs so that the owners have time to recall their dogs and leash them if necessary.
My dogs don't jump up and don't chase but I've lost count of the number of times we've been nearly mown down by a runner coming up behind unheard. I would think that an injury caused by tripping over an unsuspecting dog would be far worse for someones training schedule than a brief slowing down.

UmbongoUnchained · 28/07/2016 22:18

crown maybe runners should have Bells like cats Grin

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/07/2016 22:20

Fuck no, then even mine will go chasing after the cat with the bell, even though they are perfect otherwise.

CrownofStars · 28/07/2016 22:23

Umbongo... would that make them more likely to get chased by bouncy dogs though? 😆

Gottagetmoving · 28/07/2016 22:28

I think it's best to assume that if you can't recall your dog because it pays no bloody attention to you, someone may give it a kick when it launches itself at them....so keep it on a lead.

Personally, I wouldn't wait to see whether the jumping at me was friendly or nasty...because I am not prepared to be scratched, bitten or knocked over... I have this weird survival instinct that makes me react quite quickly.... It's a bugger.Grin

Lweji · 28/07/2016 22:28

Wild idea.
Why not keep the dog on a lead?

Presumably in most places you'll frequently encounter joggers, cyclists, children and so on.

EllsTeeth · 28/07/2016 22:31

Exactly. And if the owner had a problem with it I'd kick them too Grin

panegyricS1 · 28/07/2016 22:34

I'm a dog lover and a dog owner but I don't think that the OP is unreasonable. Owners should be vigilant and dogs should be trained. Id be embarrassed if my dog scratched someone.

MsJamieFraser · 28/07/2016 22:44

Yanbu, if dogs are going to be off leads then they should have an excellent recall, if not keep them on the lead.

If this had happened to my ds, he could have died, he's severely anaphylactic to most breeds of dogs, it's why we can't enjoy our local parks etc... Due to incidents like this.

BluePitchFork · 28/07/2016 22:49

^^ absolutely this, I just don't like out of control dogs and their owners.

Happyinthehazeofadrunkenhour · 28/07/2016 22:52

Can't believe the number of people who think OP was reasononable to have kicked the dog. How disgusting. When I'm running and a dog has occasionally jumped up I've just stopped given him a big old fuss and carried on! No big deal. Slight scratch? No big deal.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 28/07/2016 22:55

I can offer a theory on the 'never happened to me' front.

Near us there is a Victorian park, wide gravel paths in a ~1k loop, ideal for running. (signs at the entrances saying 'dogs must be under control at all times, but hey...)

I can run around there for ages when the DC are at school without being bothered by dogs. But recently tried to take DD (9) out running, around 6pm when DH gets home to take youngest DC. It was crazy. Every minute, literally (doing C25k), there was a dog either chasing us or jumping up at us, poor DD ended up terrified and refusing to go there again.

Think the time of day makes a difference for some reason. Dogs cooped up all day with owners at work go insane on the evening walk? Not a dog expert so don't know.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 28/07/2016 23:01

Navy "it's never right to kick an animal IMO"

How do you suggest I should detach a dog that has sunk its teeth into my child?
Turn my back and look uninterested?
Appeal to the owner, who's saying 'Oh don't worry, he wouldn't hurt a fly'?

CrownofStars · 28/07/2016 23:05

Lewiji, why should my dogs miss out on the fun, vital exercise and stimulation of running free just because a jogger wants to run in the countryside? As I say, my dogs do not chase, jump or engage in any way but as they are spaniel sized do present a trip hazard if the runner comes up behind us and doesn't slow to give me chance to call them to me.

Topseyt · 28/07/2016 23:43

Just keep all joggers on leads. Problem solved.

kali110 · 29/07/2016 00:01

but ghanas worked in A&E, fountain of all knowledge here, we all clearly know nothing Grin

topsey that would solve everything!

Lweji · 29/07/2016 00:08

Just keep all joggers on leads. Problem solved.

Or the dog owners. Grin
