Dog owners put them on a lead!!!

I am a runner, Im so tired of people's dogs running and jumping on me while i'm on a run. Its always dog owners with the larger dogs, if you have a dog that is excitable and is known to chase jump and be a general nuisance to others trying to enjoy the park please put it on a lead.

I suffer severe allergies and today a dog jumped on me while i'm out running and scratched my leg. I have now got a 4 inch scratch which could scar from the knee down. The lazy owner had the dog off a lead and was very overweight so could not keep up with the dog running off ahead.

She then had the nerve to tell me i was out of order for kicking the dog off me.

Please Dog Owners put your dog on a lead.

It's a bit thick to kick a dog

It's more thick to put your dog in a situation where it may get kicked. The owner is thick...not the dog and not the one who kicks out when the dog jumps on them.

YANBU and I am a dog owner. I am also fed up of other off lead dogs on a pathway ganging up on my on lead dog. The owners (normally several feet away) never recall or are very late doing so. I avoid the open dog exercising areas as mine can't be off lead yet as her recall isn't good yet but then have to put up with other dogs cornering her. I used to be scared of dogs and once when out running I was bitten by a border collie. The owner said I scared it by running!! Owners need to be in control of their dogs at all times, that means on a lead or trained with very good recall.

SonicSpotlight · 28/07/2016 18:01

It's thick because it increases the odds of being bitten.

A dog jumping up at you is not showing aggression. It's totally understandable that you don't want it near you and it shouldn't be but kicking it might provoke an aggressive response.

Gottagetmoving · 28/07/2016 18:03

SonicSpotlight Yes, it could provoke a response but people tend to react before they consider that in that situation if they are shocked or afraid. They shouldn't be put in that position.

Ok so 2 big dogs growl, bark snarl and snap at my 1 small dog. She has her tail between her legs while they carry on and I do my best to walk away and get tangled in the lead . The owners said predictably, "Oh they've never done that before!" Yawn.

motherinferior · 28/07/2016 18:06

Therapy won't solve the problem of dogs that chase runners.

MunchCrunch01 · 28/07/2016 18:08

If harmless spiders were walking around every park, I'd either avoid the park (especially if also allergic to said spiders), report any badly behaved spiders or, learn to deal with them being there. CBT...

Memoires · 28/07/2016 18:09

I think dogs off lead in parks is perfectly reasonable; where else can they go to run about? Not everyone has access to woods or beaches etc, and even if they did, there'd be bound to be someone complaining about dogs off lead there too.

I understand that dogs need a run off lead but it should be done in an open area away from paths etc that walker, runners and children use. Then those who don't want to be near dogs for whatever reason feel safe when passing as the dog will be on a lead when sharing these areas. Walking next to your off lead dog is just lazy. As a pp said, dogs don't act like humans, their reactions can't be predicted and then you will be to blame (as you were not in control)and your dog will possibly have to be put down. Why take the chance?

SpringerS · 28/07/2016 18:11

MunchCrunch, I doubt there is a park in the whole world that doesn't have hundreds (at a bare minimum) of spiders walk all over it.

Dogs are banned from my (main) local beach for certain summer months of the year. Presumably so adults and children and families (humans, in fact) can enjoy picnics etc without interference, or risk of standing in dog poo.
So I ought to feel very comfortable there. But I don't. I wonder if anybody can guess why?

Bastardshittits · 28/07/2016 18:14

I walk my large dog on a cycle track but he stays on lead as he will chase down runners and hump them.

SonicSpotlight · 28/07/2016 18:15

There are always going to be idiot owners. There will always be dogs that are off lead that shouldn't be. You can either hope that the world will suddenly become a reasonable place filled with polite, considerate dog owners or learn how to manage the risk.

I've not read the whole thread as I can imagine it's descended into a hysterical mess.

However, if I see I runner I ask my dog (and kids if they are with me) to come and sit next to me to let the runner past so don't think we are all arseholes.

DownInFraggleRock · 28/07/2016 18:16

While I totally agree that dogs should be under control (not necessarily on a lead) at all times, your attitude comes across really poorly. My dog is ten inches tall and we've clocked him doing 20miles an hour over a quarter mile distance. I run regularly wouldn't have a mission of outrunning my 3minute mile munchkin! So yes, I think you're fat shaming and being either being spiteful, or just catastrophising the whole situation.

bigreendumbell · 28/07/2016 18:16

there are a lot of very entitled runners and joggers out there too

Laughable to think people are accused of being 'entitled' purely for not wanting to be jumped on, scratched or bitten by a dog.

allegretto · 28/07/2016 18:17

There are of course responsible dog owners but there are also twattish dog owners who don't give a dog poo for anyone else! They are probably the same people who think it is ok to drive aggressively, park on pavements, put feet up on public transport, be rude to shop assistants....the list goes on. If you are twattish in general and you get a dog, you are hardly likely to become a paragon of virtue.

UnexpectedBaggage · 28/07/2016 18:17

Yabu for kicking the dog. If you had done that to either of my dogs then I am afraid you would have found yourself with a very irate owner telling you what a complete fucking arsehole you are and demanding your name and details whilst i rang the police to report you for abuse.

And they would have laughed at you for being so stupid. Of course it's ok to kick a dog that's going for you. They may well charge you because the mutt was out of control.

WaitrosePigeon · 28/07/2016 18:18

Are you actually victim blaming

I just choked on my lasagne and now my top is stained, but thanks for that laugh. Comment of the day Grin

green18 · 28/07/2016 18:18

waitrose Me too even though my dog is on a lead she will strain to get a stroke from passers by so I always stand to the side to let runners and cyclists by and they always thank me. Same when I am running, I pass many good owners who do the same . Paths are to be shared and we need consideration and understanding, cyclists need bells, dogs need leads or fabulous recall and runners need manners. Wouldn't that be nice?

Greyhorses · 28/07/2016 18:21

I am a dog owner and bloody hate off lead dogs coming up to me or my dogs. One of the dogs is terrified after being attacked by an off lead dog and now takes no chances if a dog gets in her personal space. I end up shouting at owner while trying to keep an angry german shepherd calm and waiting for them to saunter along at 1mph trying to get their dog back. It drives me mad!

I do let mine off lead but always recall them when passing people or dogs and don't let anyone dog or human get in touching distance of them. I don't care for other people's dogs and don't want to interact with it at all (same goes for children!)

If it won't heel or come back don't let it off a lead.

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 28/07/2016 18:21

Navy I told you to "fuck off" because it is rude to go around suggesting people seek therapy. I did ask for your opinion on my mental wellbeing, thank you, and you will have noticed that my comment about not being able to relax in parks or beaches was not aimed at you at all.

I do not need to seek therapy because I don't feel I can completely relax. I need irresponsibly dog owners to keep their jumpy pets out of my personal space. That is not unreasonable.
